I've been shopping around for a long term (life) economy car. I would like a Civic but their too expensive and I can't find any used that are worth looking at with low enough miles. How does the zx3 compare to the civic in terms of reliability?
I'm considering the 06' as i'm being offered ford rebate+student+military discount. The price is a huge attraction for me, I can pay it off in a few months due to tax returns. I would like to get the SeS 5 spd package, with leather, sony audio, weather. Is there anything in particular I should be aware of in the 05' and 06' models?

I have an 05 zx3 and I love it. You'll love it, and it'll love you back if you treat it good! There's a problem with the 05 (and I think 06?) 5spds, that it will require a long crank to start on a cold morning very rarely.. it's happened to me three times out of the year I've owned it.. and it's almost at 20k miles.

Actually, they are pretty damn nice, especially for the price. They are very reliable....so far. They've only been out for two model years, but most of the important bits (suspension, tranny, chassis, engine, etc) are carried over from the 2000-04 models, and as such, have been refined and tuned for the past 7 years. There shouldn't be any surprises on the reliability side. The new interior is a step above the old one, in both terms of fit/finish, and ergonomics. I personally like the front end better, it looks classier. There are no real problems with the newer style cars, except for a lack of cosmetic mods.

Hard start's the only thing I can think of. Some don't have it, some rarely. And I could be wrong, but dealers may have a reflash for it... I just can't recall right now. If you go to Duratec Chat, there's a stickied post in there about it. Either the main D chat or one of the 2 subforums.
The options/features you mentioned on your potential Focus make it sound quite nice. Have you gotten a test drive in one yet? They're addictive little buggers, I must warn you[:)]

Consumer Reports gives the Focus good ratings on reliability. The Focus and Mazda3 are still the best performers in accident tests in the economy car class. Ford dealers can be a pain in the ass sometimes. The standard warranty is 100k miles on the motor, and 36k miles on the rest. The resale value drops a lot... I'd strongly consider an 05, used 06, or waiting until Oct to get an 07. Meanwhile, see if anyone you know even remotely close works for Ford in some way. The X-Plan allows Ford employees to give vouchers for employee pricing to 3 people per year.
If you drive the car.. you will buy it. The only problem I had with mine is wind noise at high speeds. However.. this is more just my car than the Focus in general. Be sure to thoroughly test things when test driving. Especially compare the Ford brakes to the Honda brakes.

No problems with mine. So far I love it and couldn't be any happier. Only potential downside is the re-sale value but if you are going to pay it off soon or are wanting to keep it for a long time it shouldn't be that big of a deal. Let us know what you decide. Also, I see you are from South Carolina by your profile, if you are near Columbia area, give Pulliam Ford a try. I've dealt with them twice and never had a problem.
