: Crashed the SVT...

Subject says it all.
Wasnt paying attention, noticed I was about to miss my turn, rain + sand + winter tires + ~40mph = no damn way. No other vehicles or peds, luckily, but I smacked the tree going something like 25. Front airbags deployed (they do smell like crap), hood's bent up, stress fractures in windshield, pissing radiator fluid.
On the one hand, it wasnt all THAT fast, and it was straight on, so it could've been worse, but it also hit right in front of the engine, I didnt have the presense of mind to look underneath and see if my exhaust header like, broke off. It was running until the fuel cutoff switch thing tho, so I'm hopeful.
So, best case, radiator + hood + bumper + rt. headlight + windshield + 2 airbags.... oh, + insurance premium hike. Awesome
Worst friday ever, and its not 11:00am yet.
I snapped a pic with my phone, I'll post it a little later on.

Dude, sorry to hear it. At least you're ok and no one else was involved. If the insurance comes out right, maybe you can rebuild it even better.

man that sucks
02-03-2006, 11:32 AM
It's the sound that haunts you. You can hear it over and over in painful detail...
Sorry about the accident man. Good chance they will total it, as the airbags alone will be between $2K and $3K.

Happens to the best of us, sorry to hear... [bigcry]

Thats too bad, but at least your okay. If they do fix it, maybe you could get some cool replacement parts instead of OEM, like an RS front bumper and some HID lights or CF hood?

we're all here for you and your svtf, man. i've luckily never been in an accident (short of hitting a deer with one of my t-birds.... damn midwest) with a car that i had completely fallen in love with. if i wrecked my svt, i would cry for sure. i'll admit it! i'd be crying like a 3 year old girl you scraped her knee!!! hopefully its not as bad as you think, or its totalled and you can get another one or something just as good!

IF it is not a total....i suggest what slocussvt did.....FULL RS front.....[thumb]
Will pray for the car......[thumb]

This will almost certainly be a total. I had a 2000 cougar, tapped a pole going about 10 in a whiteout. it broke one headlight, windshield cracked at one corner, and somehow tripped the airbags. The car was only about one year old at the time, and they totaled it. The cost of the airbags was a bit over $3500 for that car, total repai was to be $7000 and that shouldn't have been enough for a total, but they did it anyway. I suspect part of it was airbags they install are the insurance company's responsibility to the end of time if there's ever a lawsuit

Update: And... hope? Yes, thats what we call it.
Got the estimate today: $7013.xx. $4300 parts and the rest in labor and paint fees. Its what I expected initially, hood bumper grill headlights radiator airbags, only extra thing was the AC condenser. I was surprised by the low cost of the airbags, parts were $700/ea, dont recall the labor on each but it was obviously the largest part. The estimate honestly seems a little low, but this body shop is widely spoken well of, so I think it's gonna pan out. No frame damage, no drivetrain damage, no suspension damage.
Now, until tonight, I thought I would still have to trade the SVT in. Insurance was (maybe, is) going to run me over $1500 for this next 6 months. Given that I was expecting it to sharply fall this period, I saw what looked like $7500 extra cost in insurance over not too many years, plus my deductible, and started looking for a car that was cheaper to insure. For the record, it was either gonna be a year-round-driven 2000 Miata (Newengland winters, I think I could swing it) or a 2002+ Impreza 2.5RS, AWD is cool, and a thick rear sway bar apparently gives the handling some character. Both are remarkably cheap to insure.
However, my reasearch says the damage will decrease steadily over time, until it disappears from my record, right around the time I turn 25, another big drop. Plus, I'm also following a lead on a cheaper insurance company.
So, this damn tree will end up costing me somewhere between 3 and 6 grand over 5ish years. Worth keeping my SVT? For that, yes, I would venture the opinion that it is. Maybe if I lived in the south/west, I'd spring for the Miata, but we get half a damn year of snow where I live.
Overall, I am very pumped. I did not want to part with my SVT, and now it (almost) makes financial sense to keep it. I'll take heart over money.
My phone is at work, I'll get around to posting that pic later on.

Are they replacing the dash assembly? When I crashed my last Focus, the crash books showed that the whole dash assembly had to be replaced after airbag deployment. In mine the passenger airbag pushed the dash down abou 3/4 inch. I had a dealership repair it, and they told me almost all the Foci do that after the airbags deploy. Just something to watch for.

Hmm, dash assy was not on the list, if it was out of whack it wasnt by much, I was a bit out of sorts right after the crash but I've been in the car since to grab my some text books and did a quick once-over.
Thank you tho, I'll look out for that.
