Does anyone know if Ford installs the cabin air filter in the SVTs at assembly? Or is the filter left off like regular Foci ?

I don't think the SVT has a cabin air filter, or at least mine dosen't. When it rains or is wet and I turn the heat/air conditioner it smell like moldy air.

It's left off like the regular foci as Ford got cheap with the American market and decided it was a cost cutter! Go to www.myfordfocus.com and look at the how-to-library for information it... It gives detailed info on part numbers and installation.

For $10, yes. Anyone know if Autozone, Murray's, etc. carry this?

Any owner of a Foci that doesn't have one installed is dumb and wasting there time cleaning their interior, not trying to be mean by calling people dumb but that was the first thing I did as I live in a dusty area and I clean the dash maybe one every 3 months. (if that) Before I had to clean it once a week.

lol, no. What LiquidGray said and if you hurry you can watch an episode at 11:45pm on Cartoon Network. However it's Adult Swim (watch and you'll understand [not porno]) so if you have kids tuck them in. [8D]

Yes, get the cabin air filter (aka Pollen Filter). It will make a difference in keeping crap out of the cabin.

To answer my own question. I can't find this at any local auto stores. I took a trip to my dealer today as well. This gave me a nice chuckle - here's what they wanted to charge me:
Cabin Filter - $50.99
Filter Harness - $18.90
Parts - $8.39

Isn't the assembly harness already there? I just need to find the filter, right? And the filter shouldn't be $50. It should be $10-$25, correct?

Northern California
$20-$25 at Ford dealers.
$18 - $23 at Kragen, Auzone, PepBoys
$11.96 w/ AAA card at Napa Auto Parts (p/n 4808; cross-refs exactly to Purolator),
else $13.90.

Just make sure you reinstall the cowl correctly or you'll end up with water on your passenger side floor!

Pep Boys sells the Purolator for about $12.00.

About $14 for one at NAPA made by wix.

SVT doesn't come with them. You should see the amount of crap they collect. I don't know why Ford is being so cheap and not including them. Other manufacturers use them as a selling point.

aye got mine from NAPA ($12), hell my dealership didnt even know what I was talking about when I called to ask if my 04 SVT had one, so I took the cover off and of course there isnt one, BUT there is a plastic basket thing in there that I'm sure cost more than a filter would have hehe

I installed mine on Friday. Was pretty easy. I like the idea of having one. Only $12 for a motorcraft one.

just be careful when you go to put the cowl back on. apparently, i didn't get mine on quite right bc the next time it rained (months later. gotta love CA), i had a huge puddle sitting in my passenger footwell. the dealership took care of it (apparently ther's a TSB on it), but he said it really only happens when people go to install that filter and don't get the cowl back on quite right.

Mike

PS- kragen / schuck's / checker doesn't have it. FRAM has a P/N for it, but everytime i go to order it it comes up and says it's unavailable (i work for kragen).

i installed the cabin filter (napa #4808) today. it was simple. i removed the passenger side cowl completely just to see how things fit together. for me, the key was unscrewing the center bolt that holds the left and right cowl together. i removed it halfway and pulled the expanding insert it is set in... outward.

in the process of examining things, i discovered that one of two retained pins is missing on my 2002 SVTF cowl. There are supposed to be two white pins (phallic) that locate and seat the cowl in place. my passenger side panel is missing the outermost pin.

anybody got a part no.? local dealer is working on it... pins ordered, but the diagrams look NOTHING like the cowl and retainer pins that i carried in with me.

thanks.

2004-05-10 Update. the pins ordering from the parts diagram worked. i will try and post the part no. soon. the plastic male side, female side, and plastic fitting that fits to the cowl come together in a package of four. it is possible to install (replace) the cabin air filter w/o removing the pins. if the cowl panel cover is lifted too much, then the pins must be pushing back into place. the coupling is tight so there's no mistaking if the cowl panel is "locked" into place or merely oriented correctly.

i also sealed the cowl to the windshield for good measure. the mention of water leaks scared me. that being said, there has been more than one cowl panel cover on the focus and the panel cover on my svtf is the latest model (i think). there is a piece of plastic on the underside of the cowl panel cover that deflects water from the cabin air intake. apparently that is a minor problem with respect to leaks than other issues (e.g. cabin air filter housing must be sealed correctly).

I just installed a cabin filter in my '04 SVTF. A word to 2004 owners: My car had no pop rivet by the windshield wiper; the plastic is molded like there is one, but there isn't. I just had to pull the cowl up until I had access to the filter. I never fully removed it, just popped it up enough to pull out the plastic filler and install the filter.

Mine too, I think the '03models and later don't have the screw.

I have a '04 PZEV ZX3 and I lifted up the cowl to find a a box bolted to the chassis with a mesh grate attached to the top of it. Thinking this was the egg grate thing that Ford put there in place of the filter, I pulled it out {read ripped}. Unfortunately now i can see the egg grate down inside the box, and dont think its possible to pull it out and put in my filter without undoing the bolts. And there some molding around the base of the box that I dont think would be wise to mess with. Is this different to my model?

Oh, and by the way, this is my first post, so hi everyone, just bought my car 8 days ago...

Late 04 don't have the screw on the cowl vent, and the driver side has to be removed before passenger side. AKA the new Ford Shop manual.

Hi all,

I see that this process looks pretty easy.

Thankfully y'all have found an aftermarket part # that works with the Focus.

I also have a 02 Escape XLT 4x4, and there doesn't exist an aftermarket part that fits well.

Over at escape-central.com, many of us have just created our own cabin air filters.

All you need is a furnace filter. I bought a high quality 3M filter at HD, and was able to make 4 cabin air filters for my Escape. Cut the filter down to size, a little duct tape around the cut edges, you're in business. The best part is that the filter (a nice one) was only $9, and I was able to make 4.

I haven't cracked open my cowl to take a look at the filter box in my new 04 ZTS PZEV yet, but does anyone think this "homebrew" idea will work for the Focus?

Thanks,

-Jason

It may, from my limited understanding, the filter is just a rectangle that slides into a slot there for it. Plus with Escape being a Ford as well, some of the basic things are conserved throughout models, so it may be a similar situation.

Pretty sure 05+ can't get an air filter fit in like they used to.. It's supposed to be sealed.
