: squeel, then rattle, what is it?

i know this should probably go in the technical chat but since i have a svt i wanted other svt owners to read this and try to help. i did a search but i couldn't find anything similar.
i just noticed this yesterday driving home from work. it only happens from 1800-2000rpms. i rev it up to 1800 and there's this squeel like it's the belts or something then i go up a little higher and it makes a rattle vibrating sound. it only happens from 1800-2000rpms. i don't think it's the belts, it's coming from the intake manifold area but i can't see anything moving for the vibration sound and i can't really tell where exactly the squeel is coming from, just that it's in the intake manifold area.
it's still under warranty so i will be taking it to the dealer but i have to wait until monday, unfortunately, but i was just wondering if anyone might know what it is or what it could be.

Its your heat shield on the cat.

no that fell off a couple months ago. lol

It could be the upper portion of the heat shield. Mine is loose and the bottom has been tightened up. I get the rattle too. I'm thinking of just removing both shields, but I am afraid that my generate alot of heat?

any ideas? anyone?

yeah but what about the squeel? i doubt the heat shield is making a squeeling sound too. i can see how the heat shield can rattle if it's loose, but the squeel and rattle is coming from the same problem. they're happening like at the same time

removing the heat sheild.....well just be carefull where you park i have heard alot of stories where people have removed their heat shields and parked over a bunch of leaves which soon caught onto fire...just becareful[thumb]

solution... get an orp and avoid excessive heat build up... no cat, no insanity, no problem
as long as your state doesnt do a vis inspection.

how many miles do you have on your car? maybe it needs a timing belt change?
11-06-2005, 01:22 PM
i have 22000 miles on it. BTW, i think that it might have to do with the heat shield. the bottom part fell off a couple months ago. maybe it's the top part? it sounds like that could be rattling but how about the squeel? the squeel and the rattle are definately coming from the same place. i just don't understand why the cat would make a squeeling noise. i'll be taking it to the dealer probably tomorrow so hopefully i'll find out.
Metal scaping against metal can sound a lot like a "squeal".

My 2003 svt focus makes the exact same noise, it's exactly at 1900rpm's. I was under mine changing the oil yesterday and I started looking for the problem. Like you I took it to the dealer first and they said they couldn't find where it was coming from. While I was under there I started pushing, pulling, and wiggling things. I think where the sound is coming from is the exhaust connection between the catalytic converter and the flex pipe. It's not loose but if I bump it the right way it makes the sound. I'm going to look at it this weekend again and see if I can tighten anything. I'll let you know.

Another possibility maybe:

exhaust gasket, mine did that, I let it go thinking it was nothing, then it happened more, and eventually it started sounding like a supercharger.

I agree with what rednblackSVT said in an earlier post. Put an off-road pipe on it and eliminate the problem and make more power. Mainly just for more power.....[headbang]

I just got back from looking at my focus. I didn't find anything loose under there but the noise on mine is definatley coming from the flex pipe coupling closest to the header. Does the ORP eliminate this coupling, or just connects to it also? For now I'm just not going to drive mine in the 1900rpm range. Sorry I wasn't much help svt2nv04 but every effort counts.

I had the squeel/rattle on my SVTF. First time to dealer they replaced the Clutch Master Cylinder and it still made the same noise. Second time to dealer they blamed it on my K&N Typhoon. I put it back to stock still the same noise so the third time to dealer they fixed it. It was the Cat Converter bracket on the block. Part No.4MSZ5A204A
