: SVT Woes - Surging

In the past few days my car has been acting up and getting worse and I'm not sure what to do. You know when the car surges at certain rpms from things like the tune or a short ram intake? Well my car is doing that at all rpms at anything more than an 1/8th of the throttle. Does anyone have any idea whats going on, the car is barely driveable.
Things I've done:
- Filled up gas tank
- Cleaned MAF sensor
- Reset back to factory tune
none of these things have worked. Its actually worse with the stock tune! I just had the fuel filter changed in oh.. february and that was about 10,000 miles ago. Should I replace that again?
Any feedback would be great, im skipping class because of it.
*EDIT* I should add it only happens when there is a load on the engine. If I rev the engine in neutral there's no sputtering.

Is it backfiring through the exhaust and airfilter? Is it OK if you keep constant RPM's (I mean when it gets to specific rpms with a lot of surging and you then keep it constant at that RPM's). Did you connect a OBDII tester and read the codes? What codes were listed.

i took mine in for basically the same reason. mine would surge, then bog down like there was a potato in the exhaust. it only threw one CEL and it was an O2 sensor code. After it was at the dealer for a week, they replaced a bunch of sensors including the TPS and both O2 sensors. There was another replaced in the motor but I can remember what it was. For some reason I am thinking i read "Engine potentiometer" on the repair order, i could be wrong. I'll have to look it up again, I do know they charged ford over 200 bucks in just parts.

Hey thanks for the replies. My car isn't throwing a check engine light, so im assuming its not something that the sensors are picking up. I guess I'll have to take it into ford. My warranty is up, all ihave is the extended service plan and they dont do sh!t for me with that lol.
*EDIT* Yes its ok at any RPMS if I dont give it any gas. Right now stop lights are my enemy. And around here you hit all red lights.

My car also did not show a check engine light, but I read the code 1381 on the OBDII port. Why I do not know, but mine had the same symptoms and it was the VCT solinoid. Check for codes in anycase even though the check engine light is off. Mine was to. There is a TSB on it. TSB -3-6-07.

See sticky at the top of forum on this specific TSB.

Try replacing the Cam Position Sensor, That could cause your symptoms too.... It's located in the back of the valve cover (facing the front of the car it's on the drivers side of the valve cover) it's attached by an 8mm bolt, if that has contamination like metal shavings in it it could be interfearing with the reading, and throwing off the ECU's interpritation of cam timing. try cleaning it free of any debris and re-installing it. But I would reccomend replacing it. You can get this sensor at fordparts.com for about 28.00 try it and let me know ?

Hmmm, I am wondering if it could have something to do with the Throttle Position Sensor. When those go out the car can do some very strange things. I had a problem with bogging so bad I was afraid to take it out on the road, the dealer picked it up and later found out it was the TPS. Just a thought.

Hey guys, good news. Those locking gascaps you buy at autozone... pieces of trash. I put the stock one on and its fine now!!! I guess it wasn't sealing the tank properly, and i was locking it correctly too. Thanks for all your input but im glad i didn't have to get the VCT TSB done! [thumb]
Funny it didn't fire up the gas cap light.[???:)]
Glad ya got it fixed though!
Always nice to find out it's something simple for a change.[thumb]

Good. Glad it was something simple. If you want a locking gas cap I suggest you buy it directly from Ford.

HAHA I WAS WRONG. 10 MINUTES LATER ITS DOING IT AGAIN. AND ITS GETTING WORSE. I'm taking it into the dealership tomorrow morning to see how bad they are gonna rape me. For a little while that did actually fix things. I'm just stumped because I dont understand why it only does it when the car is in gear. I'm hoping i didn' blow out my differential or drivetrain.
