i was running wires for my water temp gauge. i found this hanging between the battery and the thermostat housing. can someone shed some light on this?

That is a ground, it usually attaches to the bracket that the coil mounts on. You can see it just abouve the sparkplug wires...........

thats great, but what do i do about it? do i have to go to the stealership, or can i just cut that unit off, and just ground the wire? what does this thing do?

more importantly, will it run w/o this corrected? i may have broke off when i was routing my grounds, but i dont remmeber it. weird. i can tell ya how long it has been like that. i just found it hanging there today
This is pretty common- mine did the same.
There's a little bit of bracket still on the coil pack. I loosened that piece and jammed the tab on the wired bit. Cranked it down. If you still have warranty- try it out.
My car ran for months until I found out it needed to be attached to something. Didn't notice any difference...

that actually helps reduce the radio frequency interference caused by the high voltage in the ignition coil. it helps contain the electromagnetic field created by the high voltage in the ignition system so that you don't hear it coming thru your radio
