I was driving back from Road Atlanta last night, which was awesome. After a while I got bored of music and shut it off. I started to notice, just around 88mph, there was a slight high pitched whine like noise coming from the front end of the car. Only around that speed. I tried 5th gear, but had no luck making the noise. I have no idea what it was, but it really isn't very loud. I have the sunroof closed and no A/C to hear it.

You're T/B makes the noise. I assume you're running an aftermarket intake? Mine whines from about 3,500 rpm to about 5,000rpm. If you don't like it you can change that by porting your T/B there is a write up on FJ about it.

at 88 mph,... your gonna see some serious sh#t!!!!! maybe you were getting ready to go back to the future. did you check your flux capacitor? j/k. but you mentioned 88 mph and i just had to!

No, I have a stock intake.

This was happeneing only at 88 mph. A little slower or fastrer and it was gone.

I listened for it this morning on the way to work and couldn't hear it. But, it was pretty windy.

Also, has anyone else noticed a wind noise from the wipers at high speed (>90)? Maybe it is the wiper blades I have, but if I sweep them, it goes away.

Well for real. Does it sound like a small turbo? I think I know its the T/B man, try and running it at the same rpm (around 4k) in another gear and listen close. Just put it around there and tap the gas a little, you'll hear it. Its the way our T/B is designed. It whines.

My wipers make a whistling noise (like at 65+)... you said it goes away when you flick them, so I'm guessing they are the culprit.

What are you doing driving 88 on public roads?

The wiper noise is seperate.

What are you doing driving 88 on public roads?

Slowing down.

Did you try what I recommended? Run it at the same RPM you are running at 88mph and see if you hear the same noise, I almost gaurentee that its the intake t/b whistle.

No, I will try that tomorrow. What is wierd, is that it doesn't seem to be like that kind of a noise. It sounds like a small electric motor that is only on at that speed. It is not something that comes on or off slowly. It is on at that speed, when I sped up a little it is completely gone. When I sloew back to 88, it is back on. Really strange.

It's obvious that the flux capacitor is TRYING to work, but it must not be getting the 1.61 Gigawatts of energy it needs to make the leap into the time continuim. Maybe his lightning rod isn't adjusted correctly. Hopefully you aren't using low grade plutonium.

Wow. That is funny...

Shouldn't you be watching a Star Trek episode?

dang..... I missed the Tribbles episode

Actually, I'm not a star trek fan, I prefer my science fiction to actually have a bit of science in it.

but back to your noise, what rpm is your engine at when the noise is popping up? Maybe you could try getting the car on a quiet road at the same rpm in a different gear and see if the noise appears at that particular rpm.

It could be something like a pulley bearing or something that vibrates at a particular rpm.
Just an idea, hope it helps

No, it's not my tires. Like I said it disctincly come on at 88 and it is gone at 89. By slowing and speeding up I can keep turning the noise on and off.

I have the same problem too... !? Whenever I'm on the highway doing between 65-75, I get a strange air noise underneath; and a high-pitch too. Well, that strange noise is coming from the front driver side right where the air-intake is so I'm thinking it's the air-intake sucking in the air.

MISVTfocus

OMG I'M TELLING YOU ITS THE INTAKE FOR GODS SAKE MAN.

Yeah, I will certainly agree with you MISVTfocus that it is the air-intake.

yeah I just took mine out on the freeway and wanted to see if I was right, and damn right I AM. At 80-90mph mine whistles and its the TB I would bet a lot of money on it.

Only at 88

MISVTfocus
10-10-2005, 07:16 PM
Its because you dont have an aftermarket intake, aftermarket ones make the whistle louder. There is a writeup on focal-jet about this too, and a way to get rid of it. It seems you don't want to believe me so when you figure out its your T/B making the noise you're going to kick yourself.

It is not a whistle. I don't have an aftermarket intake. It sounds like some kind of a small motor. COMES ON ONLY AT 88 MPH.

I was doing a search because I noticed my new ST was making this "whistle" or "whine". Sounds like a quiet supercharger on the passenger's front of the car.
The intake is on the drivers side, so I don't know what it is.
What else could it be?

here is an idea for ya. I work at a Land Rover dealer and on the 2003-2006 Range Rovers the the lower windshield cowling/molding becomes warped overtime and makes a whistle/humming noise at freeway speeds. Take a look at your cowling and see if it looks warped at all, if it is lifted off the glass even a little bit. Or you could just turn your stereo back on!! LOL!

It distinctly switches on and off only at 88. That is how I know it is not intake whistle or the cowling.
