: Do It Yourself Tint

Ok, so i want to tint my windows. I have that on my to do list for the next week or so. I gotta start somewhere. I went to kragen auto parts today and they have rolls of tint. Has anyone had any experience with teh do it yourself tint? also, what is the legal amount i can put on it? I like the darkest tint, but again i don't know if i would be getting pulled over for it. Anyone have any advice?
First, DIY tint is a PITA. It's damn near impossible to get a flawless finish, you'll end up with creases, headaches, bubbles, headaches, unstraight edges, headaches. Tinting is one job that you should always leave to the professionals. The quality of the tint you buy for DIY jobs is nothing compared to the professional stuff. The pros also guarentee the tint job which is a big thing.
As for legal amount, varies from state to state.

Yep, just what S2 said. The tint you can buy from a store is total garbage. Even if you do manage to put it on good, it'll be bubbling, fading, and peeling within a year. My buddy runs a tint/rim shop here in Detroit, and you wouldn't believe the amount of people who come in with that crap on their windows begging him to take it off and retint it with good stuff.

how much does a good tint job normally cost? I have under $50 to spend right now, and I need to get it done since I run a PC repair business and always have computers in the car.

it is illegal to have any tint on the front windows in CA anyways....best thing for keeping prying eyes off your goods? A blanket.
A good tint will run you between $130-$200 for a whole car (5 windows), although san diego has A LOT of tint joints that run specials all the time...like $50 for 3 windows. YOu'd want to make sure that they back their work up with a warranty. Check the san diego Reader for coupons.

Thanks for the advice. I have kept my eye on the pennysaver, without luck thus far. i will see if I can find the reader tomorrow.

wow, the pennysaver was usually full of coupons, too. I forgot about that one. I moved from SD just last year, but it seems like forever ago.

here's a list of (automotive) coupons in the reader. Check the ones for tint. I know the one that says "free tint" is free with an alarm install, but rear three windows by themselves in $59
and here's another:

you can tint your front windows as long as its still visible inside i tinted all my windows on the ZX3. Its the lightes tint and if you do get pulled over its just a fix it ticket and you can get it off for free under your tint warranty. But as long as its not pitch black you should have no problems. I know of an awesome place in culver city california thats were i got mine lifetime warranty. I paid 200.00 and got all windows and 5' Baner on the front windshield.

DIY tint is crap,
ever see those people rolling around with the nasty bluish tint, or the nasty purple tint.... thats DIY tint after a summer :P
you could always cover with a blanket then tint when you have more $$ not to mention if someone wants to see in your car the can, even with tint.

I went with the DIY tint project about 6 months ago and I get compliments all the time.
Everyone asks where I got my tint done and I tell them that I did it. they say that it
looks like a pro did it. I did it the easy way on the front windows though. Took out those
damn big arse front windows and tinted it that way, it was cake for the fronts and just
a little little bit harder for the rest. ZX3 w/o power windows.

Sometimes you can get lucky with DIY tinting, but most of the time it's going to end up like crap. Why waste the time and money now just to have it fade/bubble in a year? Just spend the money now and most of the time it will come with a lifetime warranty.

It is really hard to get the hang of doing it, you would be better to take it in and do it like that it would cost you about 125 or so, trust the pros on this one.
