: just my luck
crazymechanic 04-29-2005, 04:05 PM so just when I've finally got some money together to order some more mods, the infamous tranny rattle strikes!
fortuneately, I'll be getting the new parts under warranty, but now instead of intake, exhaust, tb, hi-flow cat, etc., I'll be getting the quaife differential to throw in while I've got the trans out.
every cloud has its silver lining
jaykirs 04-29-2005, 04:37 PM In a way that sux, but then again, I am sure the Quaife will make a nice improvement. I would like to have one myself! btw, how much do those run?
Toolman00 04-29-2005, 04:46 PM About $1k for the SVT IIRC. I'm hoping I don't ever get the rattle, but I would really like to get quaife, flywheel, and clutch upgrades in now for my future plans.
rfinger 04-29-2005, 04:55 PM ^^^i havent heard a whole about this infamous "rattle"...................what causes it??
crazymechanic 04-29-2005, 05:49 PM basically ford was stupid and put a dual mass flywheel in a 4 cyl, and due to the added stress of having to turn a 25 lb flywheel instead of a nice 10-15 lb flywheel, it causes premature clutch wear, and tears up the throw out bearing. the rattle is caused by the throw out bearing (although the flywheel can come apart and cause some noise too), and is the first indicator that you have a problem. I'm sure WD40, our resident librarian, will post a link pretty soon to the TSB that describes the problem in full.
the best price I've seen so far on the quaife is $1095, from batinc, and they also sell a bearing kit and a shim kit to make installation easier. the differential is pretty easy to install once you have the trans out of the car, but pulling the trans is a bitch and a half.

Ahhh, the infamous Clutch TSB. It's a "sticky" in the SVT Owner's Lounge...>>>Clicky Here (http://www.focusfanatics.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=28760)
SVT_BMXer 04-29-2005, 10:29 PM ummm..im not liking the sound of all of this. Ive heard about the tranny rattle for awhile and then it struck...my warranty is up..w/o warranty, im terrified to ask how much it will cost to replace??? i dont even want to know.[?|]
crazymechanic 04-29-2005, 10:34 PM if you're out of warranty, don't worry about the OEM parts, they're junk anyway. spend the extra money to get a good lightweight flywheel like fidanza or spec, and get a good aftermarket clutch. in the long run, you'll be much more satisfied with the aftermarket parts. I'm only going with the OEM (updated) clutch/flywheel because I'm getting them for free. oh, in case anyone's wondering, I currently have around 13500 miles on my car
JRSVT04 05-09-2005, 11:48 PM Is this what I have to look forward too ( have around 11,500 miles )

I know exactly how you feel.........
gukin 05-10-2005, 05:59 PM JRSVT04, you're lucky, I didn't make it to 6000 before mine blew. Then your shifter will fall apart, oh yeah, it'll rain and your horn will stop working, and you'll get this "clunk" in your front suspension, and then your valve cover gasket or VCT solenoid gasket will go, and your car will rev like an idiot and stall when you don't expect it, and your throttle body will get all sticky and you'll have trouble getting it off idle at lights and your driver seat will get all loose and creaky and you'll need another valve cover gasket, and then your CEL will come on because your DSI malfunctioned which will be a good thing because you need another valve cover gasket, then your front bumper cowling will get all loose and floppy and your headlights or fog lights will get all sloppy & condesed and . . .
Wait, that's MY story, I sure hope it doesn't happen to you but it could. All told, my car has spent 35 days in the shop over the last year and it's a pity, the SVTF is such a cool fun car, it's just that Ford's quality . . . sucks.
So, SVT_BMXer, maybe you've got it good, maybe you've got a good SVT and you've driven it hard and gotten your use out of your clutch. Reward yourself and your little car with a good aftermarket clutch and leave the defective stuff with Ford.
crazymechanic, that's what my car's mileage is at!! ah man, i don't think i can sleep tonight, just thinking about it just give me the chills... but oh well, i still got warrenty...
Svt4life 05-10-2005, 07:29 PM yeah my warranty was way over bout 8k miles over when my clutch problem struck again so i just went ahead and spent the extra money in a aftermarket clutch no sense in paying the dealership that much money for a part that will eventually fail you again.
