: SCC's Vortech supercharged SVT
svtfiend 04-27-2005, 01:02 PM anybody got the new sport compact car mag? they have a two door svt w/220 whp coming out of a vortech s/c and they only laid down 14.9 in 1/4 mile. does this seem weak to anyone else? i see guys on here (and i do belive most of them) running that with 1200 bucks worth of bolt ons... somethings not right here! they do have 18 inch rims, which would slow you down a little, but come on! anyone have a jackson racing s/c to through out a comparo? how about you turbo guys in the same hp range? FORD POWER!!!
Grandma 04-27-2005, 01:16 PM I dont believe those numbers at all, there is no way they are running that low. id see 13.9 but even that is cutting it a lil high.
PapoSwing 04-27-2005, 01:17 PM Yeah I read it at Borders. I was wondering the same thing with 220whp I would expect higher #'s.
Moving to ”Forced Induction Chat”...
does this seem weak to anyone else?
Well...look at the source of those numbers...meaning, SCC.
You think they'd want a fOCUS to show up a Civic?[confused]
MyBlackST 04-27-2005, 03:17 PM SCC doesn't usually doesn't give good reviews or post true#'s for domestics unless they are a type of car that your typical ricers would use [:)][:)][:)][:)][:)][:)]*COUGH neon/srt's COUGH[:)][:)][:)][:)][:)][:)]*
now I am not trying to start anything here ok......so please don't take this as me saying all neons/srt's are ricers...
BigJ12582 04-27-2005, 03:29 PM I have the magazine and thugh that that was a total joke, athough besides the 18" wheels there was also alot of stereo equipmnt and stuff throughout the car that would add weight but 220 hp and 14.9 seems really weak. I'm puttig on my JRSC this weekend and running about 10bs of boost should be well into the 14's!!
belacyrf 04-27-2005, 03:40 PM Why would you expect alot better numbers? It's got 10 to 20 more hp than the JRSC does out of the box. And the JRSC SVT's are doing about that.
And yes that car has alot of extra stuff on it as well. But 220whp is not alot. You can't just look at hp, look at torque to and Centrifugal torque curves are not impressive.
Plus this car has street tires. I've seen the car, it looks nice, it's got the prototype Vortech, but it's nothing spectacular. Get my friends vortech out there, and I'm sure he'll do low 14's possibly 13's.
But no way is that Vortech car ever going to see 13's with that power. Maybe mid 14s.
BigJ12582 04-27-2005, 04:50 PM Thatsa true I've seen the torque/hp curve on the vortech and its nasty, no power or torque until 5200 rpm.
revamp 04-27-2005, 04:52 PM high 14's are doable with a tune and a few bolt-ons...I have to take mine to the track yet, but i'm anticipating low 15's high 14's, depending on my skill. 220 hp on an SVT should be doing a whole lot better than a 14.9. Bone stock SVT times are mid 15's

Bone stock SVT's probably weight about 2800 lbs. This car probably ways a good 200+ lbs more than stock.
SVT03 04-27-2005, 06:48 PM That review was bunk....Tom posted a comparo he did in his shop with the Vortech, JRSc, and his turbo, and the Vortech put out like 226 AT THE WHEELS!..which means about 260-270 crank.
belacyrf 04-27-2005, 08:58 PM What is so bunk about this car putting out 220 and Toms putting out 226?
SVT03 04-28-2005, 12:42 AM cuz SCC claimed 220 at the crank. His dyno showed that at the wheels. Big difference.
svtfiend 04-28-2005, 02:20 AM actually if i read correctly they claimed close to 276 at the crank, and you're right about vortech blowers... even on 5.0s (which i used to be really into) the vortechs were nothing like the roots type (ie eaton) blowers when it comes to low end torque, which is where the svtf needs it most. my beef is that this kit IN BASE FORM (no cooler, satin finish) is over 4300 bucks... i've seen JR s/c (this is an based on an eaton if i'm not mistaken?) for under 3G's brand new. these are a straight forward kit that i'm pretty sure most of us could get on ourselves in a weekend or more. i'm pretty sure i've seen them put out 230 with bolt ons and no serious tuning. also it fits nicely behind the valve cover instead of taking up half the friggin engine bay. i also noticed they had a stock svtf @15.7, car and driver has 15.3... maybe the driver coulda used some more practice and knocked off a few tenths....thanks for your input!
svtfiend 04-28-2005, 02:33 AM wd 40, what kinda winter tires have you used. i saw your pics on your super ford site, and live in wisconsin. i'm gonna have to buy some good all season tires before next winter and wouldn't mind a little advice from experience other than the idiots on tire rack. these contis suck at everything!

No they didn't. On page 96 they state 276 crank horsepower and 220 whp. Then on the next page it again says it put out 220hp on the dyno rollers.
I think you might have mis-read it.
SVT_BMXer 04-28-2005, 12:27 PM it should be running better than a 14.9 tho with 220 at the wheels. My friends 1.8T GTI w/ just a CAI ran a 14.9 the other night at the track. And me and him got into a little race the other night, and w/ my mods, CAI, TB, & tune, i kept right up with him. I have yet to take mine to a track but id expect low 15's high 14's.
Infra-Red SVT 04-29-2005, 01:27 AM I also think that seems slow for a car with 220hp. I have an old issue CAR AND DRIVER magazine with the same car and same 1/4 time. I was hoping that SCC would have pulled a better time. Maybe we should let the guys at Muscle Mustangs do the test.
svtfiend 04-30-2005, 01:14 PM cfm.com has a vortech supercharged svt (although i'm not sure if its the same trim or anything) that runs 12.9! they have a video of it at the strip... now thats respectable! even a low 14's would be understandable. and its got a lot of xtra junk, but also a carbon fiber hood, which you'd think would take care of the xtra weight... i just don't get it.
