ok.. well im down in fla for 2 weeks and its long trip home for when the time comes. i just hope my car makes it

ok heres my problem. it started a bout a month ago.

when i come close to a complete stop, there is this grinding type noise. happened every now and then. well now a month later, it does it almost all the time. when i let my foot off the brake and go to the gas it keeps doing it. like a grinding noise. sometimes it will start up when i turn the wheel a little bit. its really hard to explain, but im getting really nervous. im going to pull the car in to my parents garage tomorrow and take off my wheel. but does anybody have an idea what it might be?

oh when i start to go it gets fainter and fainter, but its still there. its not a constant grind is a grind... pause... grind.. pause. likes when the wheel does a complete spin.

i hope this makes sense.. im getting really nervous..

thanks in advance

I would check the brakes first and then your rotors. If those are still good then my guess would be your wheel bearings.

ok.. how do i know if brakes or rotors are good or not?

if its the wheel bearings.. would it be fixed under warrenty?

I believe all those are wear and tear items and isn't covered by your warranty. Normally you can take the wheels off and inspect your pads and you can also check your rotors for any uneven wear. If you look at the rotors and the grooves are deeper in certain areas and more shallow in others, chances are you need to have them turned and the pads replaced.

my understanding is that our rotors technically cannot be turned bc they're too thin to begin with. they're "throw-aways," made thinner so that they'd be lighter and keep mileage up. at least, that's the story raybestos told me when i went to turn a set for a customer and couldn't find specs in the manual.

sounds like a possible bearing issue to me, btw. maybe a stuck caliper?

The stock rotors are crap. The factory pads are not very good either.

I changed mine for Powerslots. Car stopped better to start with. The pads have lasted longer it is all better. Used Hawk Performance (production pads NOT racing pads). It is just a totally different world.

I just thought of this. I turned the factory rotors way back when and it ground and shimmied after about 200 miles. While the rotors were above the specs the book had, they still were too thin and the pads did not always touch the rotor.

Your description sounds EXACTLY like a problem on my wife's Expedition. Turned out it was the plunger that forces the pads against the rotors. It was sticking and would not allow the pads to pull away from the rotors completely. I would check and make sure the plungers move freely and are not stuck or sticking before messing with wheel bearings

that plunger is technically called a piston, btw.

did you figure out your problem, man?

My Prelude did this.. frozen caliper.
