: Hard to shift into 2nd..
03-27-2005, 01:12 PM
Sometimes...not all the time, my car is hard to get into 2nd. Not like i have to force it, rather, it feels like I have to hit a notch as Im going from 1st to 2nd. (hard to explain; It gets 'caught' mid shift)
Any ideas? Throw out bearing? Clutch slave needs bleeding? What?
I thought it was my clutch, so I replaced that and flywheel (clutch masters) and it still does it. I *know* my TOB has to be 'defective' as I can hear it rattling its butt off. I had it replced once (clutch TSB) but I am now @ 36.8K miles. A little over. BUT...does the slave cylinder/ TOB fall under the wearable item (clutch, belts, brake pads) or is it conidered Power Train? Whats the powertrain warrantee? Is it also 3/36?
Do you think I'm going to have to come out of my own pocket on this one?? Its not our fault that these clutches SUCK and the TOBs SUCK.
Any advice, or suggestions are appreciated...
I just dont know what to do...I can't enjoy this clutch because I cant rip a good 2nd gear pull...its of course going to effect my 1/4 times...
BTW, its MOSTLY 2nd...3rd gear and 4th gear seem ok to get into...
Are you still using the stock rear engine mount/tranny mount? Even if you're not, check it. If you are, it doesn't take hard shifts that well, I have an occasional 2nd gear miss because of it.
Technically, Ford isn't supposed to do any clutch work after 12k.
If you replaced your clutch/flywheel and its still rattling, then you've got me. AFAIK, the slave cyl/TOB was not part of the TSB and mine were not replaced when I took my car in for it. Hell, they replaced my entire tranny and they didn't replace my TOB, they only replaced my Slave cyl because it started leaking.
The only thing I would check would be the actual install. Something may not have seated properly or lined up correctly.

Its JUST 2nd though...
..and it does it when the car is sitting in my driveway...turned off...you can feel the 'notch'...
But yeah, the TOB is FUBAR I'm sure...I know that rattle...

Hi guys, I have driven 3 ST170's (uk version of the SVT) including my own and they all have the notch when going to second from first. The only time you do not get this nothc is if you change gear at very high revs, 5k+. I believe this is just a characteristic of the Getrag gearbox found on the ST/SVT so is nothing to worry about, even if it can be slightly annoying at time! :)
Oh, and hi from a new member :)

I had issues 2nd gear also. It felt like I had some gear clash when I would shift from 1st to 2nd. I took my car in and they could not duplicate. So I bought a STS to see if it would help and it didnt. Then I put some RP synchromax in and the problem went away. Not sure if your symptems are exactly the same but the synchromax worked for me.

what is synchromax..can you buy that from an autozone? i use to have that problem bad and eventually my entire gear box went out..i would have to hit second just right or it would pop right out..pm and tell me bout synchromax, my gear box is fine now but i bet it will go out again.

I suspect my TOB is to blame...but at $140 for the part (TOB and Slave Cylinder are one unit) plus basically the labor to install a clutch (same removal procedure to get the the TOB/ Slave) we're looking at ~$500.
I just want to eliminate ALL options before going this route...
I say its the TOB because mine is REALLY loud now..and I am kicking myself for not replacing it doing my clutch install...
Get me more info on that Synchromax...I'm going to bleed the slave cylinder tommorow. I need to go and find the MityVac (one man brake bleeder) that I had for when I used to road race the Miata...

Also, something else for the diagnosis...
If I pump the clutch a few times, it doesnt feel as notchy going in.
I'm going to pick up some redline synth. fluid...see if that helps...

I have also been having the same problem sometime, I was just going to toss some better fluid into it and see if it makes a difference. But its like you almost have to push the thing in with all your force if your downshifting from a higher gear on mine. Makes me angry if I'm trying to power around a tough situation by going from 4th to 2nd sometimes I cant get it in and have to stick with 3rd.

I haven't had any issues with mine other then I couldn't get the car out of 1st one time (had to fight it out and was only doing maybe 15 when it happened). I let the dealership know that as they now have the car for the clutch rattling, so they are checking out the whole transmission to see what's up.
I'd think if you pump it a few times, that you may be having some hydraulic probs and would have to look along those lines for the fix.

I have the same issue every now and again with first, second, and sometimes reverse...
Normaly if I let out ont he clutch slowing while applying pressure to the shifter it will slip fully into gear...
Dunno what to tell you, I have a new Tob, the updated clutch and flywheel aswell along with a new slave cylinder (doesnt the updated TSB involving the clutch include the new slave cylinder aswell?)
Dunno dude. [:(]

this happens to me constantly - ford refuses to acknowledge it regardless of how many times i brought it in and claims it's a "freewheel transmission" - they told me "if you're shifting hard you have to powershift or else the RPM on the transmission won't match the engine and it won't shift because it's out of sync"
since then i've just kept my foot down and as long as i don't redline i don't have the issue.

Royal Purple Synchromax is a tranny fluid like the stuff Redline makes. I have had good experiences with both RP and Redline. I went with RP because it was easier for me to get. If you do decide on Redline make sure you use the thinner of the two types. I believe its the MTL but not 100% sure.

I have an 02 svt focus and i have had the same miss going from first to second. I took it to the track and missed 2nd gear 2 out of 4 times. When i got home, i turned down my street and the clutch cable popped off. Ford charged me $80 to fix the cable and almost voided my warranty ford running my car down the track. I guess i should have taken the paint off the windows. Now at 47k mi. I am in need of a new clutch. Oh well, the car is still fun to drive.

I've missed 2nd a bunch of times cuz I pull the shifter so hard at an angle towards me... so it ends up going into the reverse slot, but cuz reverse is up and nothing is down, it gets stuck, and i look like an arse :)

Tonight, no problems...went right in everytime...weird..
...I know if I hold the gas 50% during shifts, I never have a problem...(sorta power shifting). Normally I can bang a shift fast enough, I just keep 'er floored and never bounce the rev limiter...takes a lot of practice!
Also, no TOB rattle....could just be my new clutch breaking in...as I get closer to 400 miles, its getting easier to engage 2nd. I have ~50 miles to go til I can go all out and start slamming shifts again!

yeah man its prolly ur new clutch - my gears shift very easily its alittle bit notchier but i like the feel of it.. it has less play cuz of the sts. Mines been pretty nice so far i haven't noticed shifts being difficult or a problem. I think ur clutch proly just needs to settle in..
