: BIG mpg problem
03-10-2005, 11:38 PM
I just started driving my SVT a lot. i do a lot of town driving and such, but calculated out, im only getting 17 mpg. i just got my license and im on my first full tank of gas. im at exactly 1/2 a tank left and only have 82.6 miles on my tripometer. rounded up, thats about 17 mpg. thats horrible. what is wrong. i just filled up on Mobil premium, and put on a predator and livewire ignition system. the car runs great, but it is sucking gas. HELP

how are you driving it [burnout] hehe. Cause that, like you said is terrible, i average get that on my first 1/4 tank if not better, most highway but still shouldnt be that low. One thing ive noticed tho, if i get on it pretty hard just a few times for just alittle bit, mt mpg seems to be alot lower than when i baby it around. Maybe your fuel filter is real clogged?? Def want to look into that.

I usually drive my car moderately, running it up to like 4k rpm before shifts (with the occasional flooring hehe), and I usually give it a lot of gas before shifting. Anyway, the long and short of it is that I expect relatively not-so-good gas mileage, but I don't care cuz I live driving this car so much! What I usually get is between 21 and 24 mpg. So unless you're beating your car like no other, something's not right. Maybe engine management? Reflash your car (if you've got a tune) and take it to Ford, if anything.

More than likely your driving rather spirited. I noticed my MPG dropped way down right after my tune, but then I realized I was driving like a bat outta hell. Jackrabbit starts from stop lights, blitzkrieg 7k accelerations onto highways, the added power was intoxicating. Ease off the throttle and shift around 3k, youll be in 6th by 45 MPH but your MPG will go back up.

I have the same problem with the 5.4L [:D]
I don't know about the SVT though. I just drive it really hard and put gas in it, never checked the mileage.

Mileage for my SVT really sucks for city driving, even when it was bone stock, it's my wife's car and she drives primarily in town and gets maybe 200 mi. to a tank. When I drive it to work, which is about 27 miles away and mostly highway, I get around 300 mi. to a tank. It's kinda funny like that. I'm waiting to see if the SCT tune and coil and Livewires help out with the mpg.

Maybe your fuel filter is real clogged??
that is such a stupid statement that i see alot here... sorry if i am harsh.. but damn... use your head. if the filter is cloged you will use less fuel.. duh!! not to mention the drivability problems that a clogged filter causes.
ease up on the gas and your milage will improve. It is all in the driving style.

I've actually found that I get better gas mileage when I drive "spirited". there's so many hills in my area, and so many stoplights, that babying the car just doesn't work. babying the car has gottem me about 17-18 mpg, whereas spirited driving usually nets around 20. if I go on a long hiway trip, I get around 30
03-11-2005, 09:24 AM
^^^ I don't know, mine is getting about 19 MPG and it used to get around 24 MPG and my driving hasn't changed, still traveling the same roads with the same driving habits. Even when I baby it, shifting early and being light on the throttle, it is still getting that kind of crappy milage. My supercharged Grand Prix that was cranking out almost 300 HP (it had a few mods) got better milage than this car and I drove it harder than my SVT. I am hoping that when I get my SCT tune installed it will help because I have never seen a 4 banger eat this much damn gas!!

Holy crap guys! What is wrong with your cars? On a normal tank, if I drive normally, I get 28mpg, and even since the tune with very spirited driving, I'm getting minimum 25mpg. I am running Royal Purple and Short Ram though...
03-11-2005, 10:37 AM
I think mine is in the toilet because I am in traffic a LOT now since I moved and that is probably the culprit, all that damn stop and go crap LOL. On the highway cruising at 70 to 75 I get about 33 to 34 MPG. Found that out on my trip to Corpus Christi from Houston.
03-11-2005, 10:41 AM
Mine is pretty poor too. I think I had one tank that was worth almost 300 miles but most tanks I'm struggling to get 220... not even 4000 miles on the car yet ??

Might be missing something here. If you're on your first full tank of gas your gas gauge might be off, at least as far as 1/2 on the gauge being equal to one half of a tank. Run the tank down low and then refill and calculate the mileage, that should be more accurate. Just a thought...
The other point is whether you ended up with oxygenated gas in the car, because that isn't going to help either...

I get about 225-240 miles on a tank in communting stop and go to work. On a trip to NY last year, I was getting nearly 380-400 to a tank. It beats my wife's ZX5 hands down for sipping gas on long distances. Her car can bearly manage 300 miles to a tank on a long haul. Then again, it does about the same on short drives. The transmission even at full throttle keeps the car in some kind of zombie state. :) So that would do it. 6-speed in my SVT is my friend. Notchy shifter and all.

thanks guys, yes, my drving has been "spirited" to say the least. I do plan on toning it down, but it just so addictive. my tire pressures are spot on, so i think im gonna clean my filter and check my O2 sensor. Im thinkin it is just my driving, mainly because i notice NO problem besides my milage. I alos have been doing next to none highway driving, all around town and stop and go, so that could be a factor aswell. thanks. I think im also gonna run it down really low on gas, fill up, and put some injector cleaner in it, just to see what happens. BTW, where is my fuel filter located, just for future reference?

ya just judging by what the gauge is at is a really bad way to check mileage. I have checked every tank since i got mine (used 03 that had 17k and ive put 1k miles on it) and i havnt gotten over 23 mpg yet. (of course its more spirited since i havnt had it that long) but im hoping highway driving is a lot better...
also, what is the exact tank size on this car? one time i got like 240 miles and i got all excited because i thought it was a 10 gallon tank (but i ended up putting in like 11.5 gallons) i know on my dads 01 SE focus its like 13.5 i think? He has the zetec and gets about 25+ around town, and just over 30 on the highway.
Im pretty sure the most accurate way to check MPG, is to drive it about till the light comes on, go to a station you usually use, pick a pump, put the nozzle in all the way, and go until it clicks (dont go anymore than that) reset your trip, then drive that tank all the way down (technically you could check it at any time on that tank, but you will get a better average of different driving types if you use 8-10 gallons) Put the nozzle in all the way, and once it clicks divide your miles by the exact number of gallons you just put in.
I too am curious as to where the fuel filter is located, i might go ahead and get new plugs/fuel filter (have already run a bottle of injecto cleaner, which usually does help) and see if that nets an improvement.
*bscarter - You got 380-400 on a tank? even if the svt tank is 12 gallons, thats 32-33+ mpg! (or is the svt tank over 13, because that would bring it down to about 30)
I wish i could squeeze 30 mpg out of city driving, that would make this car that much better :) O well, id rather have this car with 22 mpg, than my last car (94 yota corolla with NO balls that got 35 mpg lol)
^^^Gas tank capacity is 13.2 gallons^^^
The reserve light comes on at ~10gallons consumed.
How many miles are on your car?
It takes a while for these to break in, and get your best gas mileage.
Seriously. I'm talking at close to 5,000 miles, my gas mileage was still going up.
The suggestions about properly calculating gas mileage are right on.
Do not go by 1/4 tank, 1/2 tank etc.
Fill it up...reset trip to 0...drive...fill it up...record miles driven/gallons to fill...reset trip...repeat.[;)]
FWIW, I posted my mileage results in this thread...>>>Clicky (http://www.focusfanatics.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=36916)

hey, it must have been my driving, because with 170 miles on a new tank, im still have a lil less than 1/2. i also cleaned my air filter. its crazy to think that "spirited" driving can take away up to 10mpg. thanks for the help everyone.
BTW, still wondering where the fuel filter is[:p]
03-14-2005, 10:49 PM
^ but its JUST SO FUN! i always find myself wanting to go 5mph extra, because it dosnt take much of a push on the pedal to get a nice jolt and put you at +5 [:D]
03-14-2005, 11:11 PM
yea ive noticed for a 4cyl, these little cars dont do so hot on mpg, my personal best on the first 1/4 tank was 130 miles, that was the other night when i got caught behind people doing 35 and had it in 5th or 6th the whole time cause of the snow. But on average, i do mostly highway driving, i get about 26-28 and in town is less than that.
03-14-2005, 11:22 PM
I have 14k on my svt and i've been the only owner. At the start i was getting about 23-24 mpg and as was stated above the mpg has gone up since i have put some miles on it. I havn't noticed a real stop. (well if you consider i had to put the stock parts back on to fix a problem). Around town with about 7 miles of highway driving i get about 26mpg. Love it but its lost some pep =(

your car is too new to need injector cleaner!
BTW, still wondering where the fuel filter is
Maybe this will be a help. [;)]
Though, it doesn't list the exact location.
