: nitrous purge question
trize1217 03-04-2005, 06:15 PM i am getting nitrous here pretty soon and i want to get a purge kit, mainly for show and they're just pretty cool to have. and i was wondering if i use a WOT switch for the nitrous, how do i purge it. just redline my car in neutral or something or with the clutch in. although i would like to have my nitrous activated by a switch on the dash somewhere. i really need help here guys and input would be a huge help. thanks in advance.
EdwardK 03-05-2005, 12:23 AM The purge is operated by a seperate solenoid that will have a seperate push button switch.
trize1217 03-05-2005, 11:37 AM okay great thats what i wanted to know. i thought you had to actually engage your nitrous system in order to get it to purge. that cleared a lot up for me.

You have to have the bottle open obviousley as well...and you can purge it even without using the nitrous at all in a run..you could ride around and purge away the whole bottle if you wanted.
superchargedSVT 03-08-2005, 04:11 PM I had my zex wet kit on my friends 350z, and the purge solenoid went in the nitrous line before the injection solenoid. And everyone is right about having the bottle open, and the system on just make sure that the system isn't armed if you run wot switch, and rev up and hit the rev limiter.
Iceboy9191 03-08-2005, 04:36 PM i never even knew what that meant all these kids are obsessed with saying "nitrous purge" tho...incase you were wondering

huh? [???:)] maybe I'm reading it wrong but uh care to explain?
EdwardK 03-08-2005, 09:09 PM I meant to do this when it was first posted... Anyway, here's a pic of the nitrous setup on my Stang for info purposes
http://pic14.picturetrail.com/VOL534/836667/2973394/88406743.jpg
The blue arrows are nitrous flow
The light purple arrow is the nitrous solenoid
The lime green arrow is the line for the nitrous gauge
The pinkish arrow to the right of the green arrow is the fuel solenoid
The red arrow is the purge solenoid. If you look right at the arrow you see the small copper line that runs the purge out of the engine bay.
Hope this visual helps explain it a little better. [cool]

Nice job on the diagram..Thanks!
svtfocusmansvt 03-10-2005, 08:20 PM Is a purge valve a must? Or is their an alternative to purging the line? I wan't the most out of the system, without having to be worried if I will get a full shot or not? Another thing that questions me, how do you know when the bottle is getting low or is empty, will their be harm if the nitrous is armed and nothing in the bottle? Sounds like a dumb question but I am new to the nitrous world and am still trying to learn about it.

You should read the FAQ's section at Nitrous Express' web site - CLICK HERE (http://www.nitrousexpress.com/Pages/faq.htm) its one of the best for those new to nitrous and you'll find it VERY helpful.
Now to answer your questions. No, its not, but I recommend having one. You'll never need to worry about getting "a full shot" if the bottle is at its optimum pressure, which is 900-1050psi. Get a N2O pressure gauge on the bottle or a cockpit mount so that you can monitor bottle pressure. I recommend getting a bottle heater to keep the pressure in check when its cold. Use wet towels to cool the bottle if its over 1,100 psi (unless its from the heater, then just purge off the pressure before you run. You'll know when the bottle is low by the gauge or the "feel" of the hit. There will not be harm if the bottle is empty, but if you get a wet system (which I HIGHLY RECOMMEND) you'll be dumping fuel into the intake tract with nothing to atomize it. The basic thought is that you use .8lbs of N2O X 10 seconds= 100 HP or a 100 shot will use .8 lbs of N2O every 10 seconds. If you get a good speed shop to help you out with your decisions, ask every question as you are now, do your system the right way wet system with a pressure gauge, WOT switch, bottle heater, and don't get greedy by adding a bigger N2O pill than you should (My opinion is a 75 shot), you'll be fine. Good answers ^^^^^
A few things....you know when it is empty because all the joy is gone..an empty nitrous bottle is a sad thing, but no, it will not hurt anything at all.. Mostly a purge is for big nitrous hits or dragging, so you get instant power, the delay without a purge is VERY VERY short... I never purge my focus, it is mostly for show on street cars, at the drag strip it serves a purpose, but on the street the loss is minimal...You can just spray for a second to purge anyway... I do it at the track... I just go out on the street and hit it for about a half second and then come back into the track, everything is presureizzed and ready to go
