Hey, I've installed two different types of short-ram intake questions onto two different SPIs without any mods or TB swaps. If you have a question regarding installation, I'll do my best to help.

hey im new in here...yes i need some help, curently i have a short ram intake in my spi, but i want to switch to a cold air intake, the intake i have now has a rubber piece that connects the pipe to TB so if i get a CAI and install the pipe to the old rubber piece is it going to work????i think it will....let me know if im wrong.... also I've seen CAI installed in other spi engines but i dont see the breather hose, where is it?????

Usually ppl toss the breather hose in favor of an air breather filter (small cone filer attached to the valve cover) like this

If the rubber piece you have is like mine and connects a Zetec-sized intake tube to an SPI throttle-body, (which basically means it's a little tapered) I would see no problem intstalling a CAI. The main difference would be the extension of the pipe down the engine bay, which really has nothing to do with the TB. The only problem I might see, is the possiblity that there might be other parts that might be in the tube's way, that aren't found in a Zetec engine bay. I doubt it though. Usually the only problem holding SPIs back is the TB diameter, so if you have something that will correct this problem, theoretically, any mod made for the Zetec should be able to work with the SPI. TB-related mods that is.

hey is that your stock tubing in that picture?? if so you just bout the air filter and what else?

Actually, I believe that is Waterboy's engine bay. Since he's been in this topic, I'd suggest asking him, but from the looks of it, it does look like stock tubing. It looks like he added a rubber sleeve, clamps, a filter, and a heat shield (respectively left to right). It is possible to make a short-ram system this easily, not to mention inexpensively. The only downsides are, of course, that you are using makeshift parts, and that you have a stock, rubber tube, which is very prone to heat absorption compared to an aluminum tube. This is bad in that it creates warmer air which results in lower hp gains. Seeing as an intake's purpose is to generate cooler air and in higher volumes, you would only benefit from the higher volume of air because the air temperature will be the same.
Also, I have seen various sleeves and adaptor parts for intakes at Autozone, Pepboys, and a plumbing pipe coupler of the appropriate size can be found at Home Depot and usually they come fitted with clamps. They work just as well as silicone ones.
