: after much debate..

i have decided to go ahead and trade my 03 ZX3 for an 02 or 03 SVT.
Origionally I was looking at wrx's, GTIs and 240s..but after driving them all they dont feel as 'fun' as the SVT did for me..plus the prices are reasonable.
My question is this:
What should I be looking for while I try to find the perfect SVT? Are there any specific things that I should have checked out at a shop? Any surefire signs of wear on the frame, tranny, or motor that are tell-tale warning signs of abuse?
Any help would be appreciated.
btw: my payments should be reasonable b/c i owe nothing on the ZX3 and its only got 23K on it. I hate payments but the SVT will be worth it.

I would be careful with anything with a lot of mods...Stay away from custom crap...exhaust, intake...etc...check for updated TSB's. There are several for the SVT...DSI cable, clutch and flywheel, ECU flash, intake manifold (if applicable). It seems that some cars are problematic...If you can get the history on the car...look at it carefully. Some cars seem to have ongoing problems that just can't seem to be fixed.
Anyway I have had my car for about 2 1/2 years and I love it. I seem to get some unwanted attention ever once in a while but it is a blast to drive and I have had no major issues with it except for the tsb's...

well... when I traded my 03 PZEV for the 02 SVT, right after start up, the exaust was very inconsistent. You'll know it when you hear it. However, after the car warmed up, it was all gravey.

The clutch is the only trouble spot on the SVT. There is a TSB that addresses this. Other than that Im sure youll enjoy the new car, they are super fun to drive!

don't get one with any minor body scraps or anything. the dealer didn't let me see the history report until I signed. That was my mistake. So... just get one that's clean. and don't jump at the first opportunity.

Look around and research. Pull a CarFax on it, trust me it will be worth the $19 or whatever it is.
Also, shop wisely, if you can, sell your ZX3 outright, and then have cash to bargain with. I just picked up and 02 SVTF with 32k miles, and drives like it is brand new for $9500 cash, yes I said $9500 cash
The deals are out there [thumb]

may be dumb question, but what is a TSB? i have heard this used many times and never knew exactly what it meant.

Well, if the tires are almost bald and it has very little miles, it might tell you that it's been abused. If the brakes are nearly gone too.
Other than that, I can't think of knowing unless you see custom stuff... or if you know who's been driving it.

I'm pretty picky when it comes to used cars. Check the leather interior for cracks. Make sure the seals on the headlamps are still factory, if they arent there is a possibility it has been in a crash. After you get it, reset the battery *you do this by taking off the ground and the positive effectively cutting off the system* this will reset the cars memory to the original. Make sure you look at the suspension of the car for anything suspicious, rust, cracking, creeking etc. Try and get one with all the TSB's done, this might be harder to find though. And the best bet would be to get one that is still under warrenty. If its been tricked out, figure out who put the modifications on and make sure you (yes you the buyer) approve of these modifications. I hope that helps. You made an excellent choice!
