: Backfire With New Exhaust
02-24-2005, 12:29 AM
I just got my MBRP exhaust put on my SVT. I would recommened it to anyone with an SVT. Anyway, there is more backfire with the exhaust one. I don't know whether to take it in to the ford dealer and have them look at it, since it's still under warrenty, or take it to a garage and have them fix my Air/Fuel ratio. If anyone has been through this or know what the problem is please help me. THANKS

lol, i watched that focus challenge exhaust video, and when the mbrp exhaust drives by its so funny. its like vrrawwwwwwww POW WAAAAAAAAA. Don't take it to the dealership, do you have your cats on or off?

I'm not insulting your intelligence, but are you sure its backfire? The stock exhaust does that thing where you rev it and it pops a couple of times. Which i don't know how to get rid of. My fellow employee has an 89 oldsmobile with a broken tailpipe, that IS BACKFIRE. IT sounds like a gunshot (lower pitch) everytime she revs it. Either way, i'm sorry i can't offer you a solution.

I was thinking about buying new spark plugs and putting them on and see if that makes a difference or not. And i do know what you mean about the sounds. They don't sound like that. The sound is much better i think.

Yeah my exhaust pops just a little to much. No your not insulting my intelligence. I Just want to know if i can stop that popping noise.

Sorry i can't help you stop that noise, if you find out, plz do tell me!

My freind told me that it is the air fuel ratio. From stock to aftermarket exhaust the flow is different, and that is why it makes that noise. So i am going to call a few places tomorrow and see what they can do. I'll let you know if i come up with any solution. Thanks

It's normal I kind of like the rumbleing.

yea...i just put on the fc orp and i noticed how much backfiring there is.i dont think it is neccesarily bad though.

the popping will never go away. you might be able to reduce it with a tune, but it has to do with the incredibly low backpressure of the exhaust system. the standard zetecs don't do it as much, but the svt does it a lot. any car with a performance exhaust on it will make that popping noise regardless of whether it has been tuned or not.
if it is a backfire though, take it to the dealer, that's not good.

lol... that popping noise is kinda funny. If I take out the SVT-F and i dont let it warm up completely, I'll leave our complex and take it up to about 5k in first and coast to a stop to the stoplight and its popping like crazy. The exhaust on my civic hatch doesnt do it nearly as loud and as much as the SVT lol
I installed the MBRP on my SVT last summer and it does the same thing. I donít think it has any affect on performance and I kind of like it.
It isn't backfiring, that is a bit of fuel in the exhaust that ignites due to the heat of the pipes. You can lessen it by leaning your A/F a bit but it will never entirely go away.

i like the sound :)

Yeah you won't eliminate the popping/burbling , but mine was reduced after I flashed it with my SCT Xcalibrator. [:)]

i also have that popping sound from the exhuast when i'm coasting to a stop in any gear... but i have to be over 3250rpms and then coast down and it will pop until it reaches like 1750rpms and it doesn't pop anymore. but i got it tuned by Wayne (SCT) and the popping went away, i kinda miss that sound... i like how it sounds, reminds me of performance.
