: Screamin Demon Coil Pack
11-05-2004, 10:42 PM
I am looking to purchase a screamin demon coil pack and the 10 mm wires, I know the coil pack fits right into the stock position but will the wires work with a SPI? And another thing, if I get a 70 mm TB will a Volant fit on it, or is the largest I can get is a 65 mm?

Yeah...I was about to post the same thread, except for the TB thing?
So............ Does anyone know if the Screamin' Demon Coils fit the SPI??????

Coil packs are the same between the SPI and the ZETEC. The difference is in the wires as they are not interchangeable. I have seen the SD coilpack on an SPI or two and it looks/fits fine.

The instructions say that you have to get 10mm Livewires, so I can use the regular stock wires?

Trust me....go with the LiveWires. Stock wires won't fit, and if they did, they wouldn't be able to handle the EXTREME heat that the Screamin' Demon Coil Pack puts out. Just buy the LiveWires to be on the safe side.

The livewires fit the SPI engine? Where do they sell them at?

does one really need a new coil pac with the spi?(if only running light mods?) i was just going to get a set or iridium(denso) plugs and possibly some wires(obx, or such?).

I thought the livewires didnt fit the spi

wheres a good place to pick up a screamin demon pack ?

The Screamin Demon coil has different "receptacles" from the stock coil.
See these two pictures:
Stock Coil - Has "male post" receptacle
Screamin Demon Coil - Has "female socket" receptacle
So, while you may be able to use the coil, your stock wires and most likely any aftermarket Focus wires, other the the Livewires, will not work from that standpoint either.
I've heard that some people have bought the Escort Ford Racing wires and they work, but I don't recall if it was for the SPI or Zetec, so I cannot personally account for that...
I've got a customer right now that bought the Screamin Demon coil and wires kit on the advice of someone on this site that they would work on his SPI. Even though it clearly says on my website that it's for the Zetec and SVT Focus Only, and he did not ask me in advance. Of course now he want to return it....
Hope that helps [thumb]

So the coil pack is pretty useless on an SPI?? Or you just need to find the right cables?

Personally, I would my money somewhere else [thumb]

I know you know your busines very well, but I know of more than one SPI with the SD coilpack on it. The coils on the SPI -vs- the ZETEC are the same, and I have done the swap myself at the track when my Accel took a poop. I see by your pics that the posts are different, but to say that it won't work at all and to dismiss it isn't quite right. What I mean is this: Many times I have been told that things won't work, only to go do it and it works fine. Maybe I have a gift, I don't know but my car is a testament to things that people said i couldn't do or wouldn't work. For example: My 4.6 Mustang Gt TB, or my ZETEC injectors, or my AEM alt. UDP, or my Escort GT header. I have recently turbo'd my SPI because it had been said that it couldn't be done. I used mostly Ford OEM parts and it works fine. These are just a few things I have modified to work and work well. Now I didn't mean to come across as a critic or as a smart-ass, not at all. I'm just tired of hearing "No, that won't work." and that's it, with no attempt at a remedy.
So now that you hate me: I need a set of EV6 39# flow-matched injectors. Can you make it happen for me? Lemme know and we'll do business.

It's all good [thumb]
On those SPIs with the coil, what wires are they using ?
I didn't say the coil itself wouldn't work at all, just the design is different so the stock wires and the standard aftermarket wires are not made to fit "correctly". Not only is the post vs. socket different, but the way the wires secure themselves on the coils is different. Your standard wires has a boot that goes over the coil housing, and the metal connector goes over the post inside the stock coil. Whereas the SD wires have something of an "inside" boot that seal on the inside of the coil housing, and of course the metal connector then fits into the socket of the SD coil, then of course they have the plastic clip that secures the wire over the outside of the coil housing that has a "lip" on it to lock the wire in place.
That's really hard to explain and for others might be easier to see in pictures :
Stock wire, coil side
SD wire, coil side
So, the net of it is.... yes the SD coil will work, but the SD wires won't. So, assuming people are using the stock wires or aftermarket wires for the SPI, they are probably not "secured" and socketed correctly and may pop out as a result. But, I will admit, I have not touched an SPI in this regard, so I'm only speaking in "theory" [;)]
Yes, I can get the flow matched injectors. I will have to check with my Ford Racing guy on price though. Shoot me an Email or PM with a reminder and I'll be sure to get back to you on Monday.
BTW, I don't hate you now. Maybe if I get to know you that will change, but not likely, I'm not much on hate [:D]
Please do let me know what wires those SPIs are using that you have put or seen the SD coil on. That will certainly help me.

Nub question here but what exactly do I get from SD coils (benefits)?
11-25-2004, 12:21 AM
Basically, better spark.

While im talking to you thanks for the great service( i just bought volant CAI of ya)

The SD Pack is really on my next to buy list... what cables would I then have to use?
11-25-2004, 08:39 AM
Like Ray said, better spark. Let me expound on that a bit. With the better spark you'll get better idle, better throttle response, and a bit of gas mileage. Not anything huge, but a bit of mileage.
I'll e-mail you Ray on the injectors, and will PM and e-mail my SPI bretheren to find out what those guys are running. I personally run an Accel for an Escort, and Accel wires from a 2.3 dual plug Ranger. I was runing FocusSport wires on my Accel, but I toasted one on the header and I'm not ballst enough to ask Randy for a warranty set.

97-2000 Escort SPI 8.5mm wires from Magnecore will fit. As should any performance wires from that application. What we need are the different contacts in the coil and the snap "keeper" to hold the wire in the coil.
Hope this helps.

If you can get the coil mount from that year Escort it will make your coil sit horizontal as opposed to vertical and you won't have to make spacers for our mount. The end result is a much cleaner install.

I have a MSD coil on my spi focus which has the same housing as the SD coil. This set up will work if you use zetec wires the ones with the plastic clip. The only thing I did to make it work was modified the end of the boot that connects to the plug by cutting off the tip and it will give you a secure snug fit. And as for the benefit of having an upgraded ignition is simple ,if you have a cold air intake upgraded TB and exhaust your car uses more air and fuel the ignition helps you burn it faster and more efficiently there for giving you more mid range and high end power.

Wouldn't the SD /w Focus LW fit on any focus model, since one end of the LW fits onto the SDC, and the other would attach to the spark plugs?
I don't see why they wouldn't fit though? Is the valve cover a different height on the SPI, or do they use weird spark plugs? I'm confused :/
12-22-2004, 09:02 PM
The wires will fit on the housing the only difference would be boot that connects to the spark plug, and the zetec wires are a little shorter than the spi wires but they will work if you modify the boot that connects to the plug by trimming off the flared tip.
