: 2.3L Engine Swap - PATS Worries?
04-02-2012, 11:54 AM
Hello all, I am putting a stock '04 Duratec 2.3L into a '73 Lotus Europa Twin Cam (mid-engine, fiberglass and backbone frame, about 1500#) and am hoping to use the stock PCM etc. I have the complete intake and cat, the two engine harnesses, the Powertrain Control module and harness, and the Battery Junction Box harness the PCM harness plugs into, I can figure out the wires through the C213 / C214 plug for ignition, start etc. to integrate with the simple ignition switch of the Lotus - the question is, is this all for nought - will the lack of the Passive Anti Theft System have the PCM disable injection and ignition? I can go the MegaSquirt route, but I would rather use this, it is so cool and solves so many problems. Thanks!

im not sure what your asking here

The Ford Focus uses a Passive Anti-Theft Module that ties in with the alarm system and the cars' unique key and ignition switch, and it communicates with the Powertrain Control Module, if it is not present at all will the PCM then inhibit the injection and ignition functions in order to disable the car by preventing engine start? Thanks, Bob

yes it will, but im sure there's a way to trick it into thinking its always there.... im not 100% sure tho.

Actually, I have the PATS module as well I believe, I just disregarded it at the time, and I have a Central Junction Box as well, so I think I will just need the under dash harness to link everything together, and a Focus ignition switch with its bespoke key - I may be able to pull this off after all! yea if you have the anti-theft system you can just run it all in junction with the pcm and everything else with the stock 2.3L. im not sure how you would get around that with out it. would you just run some kind of bypass system? do that make such systems?
also im wondering are you going with a high compression build for this? or forced induct? or just plain stock? I know you say your putting in the stock up top but im wondering if your going for more power once you get it in!
i wanna see some pictures!!!

Go to a car audio shop that installs aftermarket security systems, they have a bypass module, or find the correct key that was used with the original pcm and the pats ring from the ignition cylinder ring and tape them together and hide them out of sight. Problem solved

The only way around the PATS is to have the halo/key from the car with the ECU OR some of the ECU from the Duratec Focus I can turn off the PATS in the SCT software sense you dont have the ECU in the car a bench flasher can be used to load the first tune so the PATS is disabled
I can also do your tuning

Thanks Guys - Great suggestions! I will post pics as soon as I figure out how to, I have spent years literally doing the mods to this Lotus Europa, with just 1,500 Lbs a stock 2.3 L Duratec will be stout enough - I want reliability and driveability initially at least with all the mods I have done, a torquey 130 HP is a good start! I will definitely check out the bypass module, or better yet to have the ECU itself reprogrammed on the bench flasher- 1turbofocus I will be getting in touch! Thanks All! Bob Scates

Duratec Lotus - Pics posted! OK I put in some pics in the gallery - Miscellaneous and Photoshop section, they only accepted a few, it shows an engine in a red frame, and the harness, titled Lotus Europa / Duratec 2.3L From the replies I believe I can send my ECU module off to be reprogrammed to eliminate the Passive Anti-Theft stuff and maybe add 15 - 20 HP too- 150 HP in a 1500 Lb mid-engine sportscar will be great!
