: Photographers- Post Your 50mm Shots Here!
AdmiralZX3 01-21-2012, 07:24 PM 50mm 1.8 lenses are some of the cheapest lenses available. And they are also some of the best pieces of glass too, doesn't matter if they are Canon, Nikkor, Sony, Sigma, or Tamron lenses. Not to mention some of the sharpest as well.
So get to posting your shots you took with 50mm!

Charged SVTF 01-24-2012, 05:40 PM What ISO? Seems grainy but could be my screen. Usually have a monitor connected but working from the laptop screen tonight.
AdmiralZX3 01-24-2012, 06:13 PM Yeah they are a bit grainy. I think I shot these at 800 iirc. I wanted a little grain anyways, these guns were WW2 era.
The next day I was able to sync my flashes and shot at 100. I'll post some of those up tomorrow when I get them done.

Thanks.
mix1983 02-02-2012, 09:45 PM I say split the difference. I like both, to be honest. Also the very last photo in your last post, I feel like the whole thing should be in focus, since its already cut off in the reflection below. Just opinion, though. Btw, guess whose door I'm not kicking in.

Hey thanks! I really liked the reflection of the cylinder on the frame of the revolver, so I shot that in focus. However, I do have a finished image of the cylinder in focus and the reflection out. But my favorite is the one I posted. Thanks for your opinion though! Much appreciated (see avatar directly to the left).

2011 SE 02-04-2012, 02:54 PM Not the best photo in the world by any means, but I was cleaning up around the house and put all my lenses in one place for once so I thought I'd snap a quick photo. tukaniSVT 02-06-2012, 08:05 PM Definitely not bad photos.
A word of advice, if I may. If they begin using you as a second photographer:
- Be careful of your focus. A few of the photos above are a bit fuzzy. Not good when they print them.
- Try bumping up your ISO more and Shutter some as well to capture the motion sharper.
- If you use flash, invest in a diffuser for your flash, or if you get an added on-camera flash, aimed it up with a diffuser. The Gary Fong or Whale Tail or Honel diffusers are great. They spread the light of the flash and you will have less red-eye and more full color shots.
- When giving shots to the Main shooter to edit, don't process anything with effects like B&W or Enhanced color. Let them decide on creativity to portray to their client. Since you are not the first shooter, you don't know what the bride is looking for.
- Stick with shooting in RAW. With that, make sure you have plenty of batteries and memory to cover you for a full day of shooting.
- Buy some very comfy insoles for your dress shoes, you will be standing and walking alot.
- If they ask you to take a group photo, I would go with an aperture of 3.2 - 4. If you were to set your aperture to less than 2 like 1.8. You will have alot of out of focus faces. Don't want that.
These are things to help you become successful as a wedding photographer. Many people don't realize how much work is in it until you do one for someone else's wedding and not a wedding that is a close friend. Different ball game.
Back to your posted photos ... I really like the last one.

yeah. def some good advice. im learning a lot and have sooo much to learn. i wont feel comfortable being second for a while. im practicing with whatever and whenever i can. trying to better myself. my wife is also trying to learn with me. im really just trying to do it for sport and maybe one day as a job. i have lots of equipment to buy still. its a lot to take in, but i enjoy it. its a relaxing hobby right now for me. i think my wife and i are going to visit the philly flower show next month to fool around.
my great uncle was princess grace's wedding photographer and one thing he told the family is that wherever everyone else is taking photos, go to the other angle and you may just have the better shot. he had a wooden leg and would go into burning buildings back in the 50's and take shots and sell them to the papers.
tukaniSVT 02-06-2012, 10:20 PM Nice story about your uncle.
As for the equipment, I wouldn't go nuts buying all of that. That's a mistake for many people. I would go in with what you have and work a gig at a very very low to no cost extra photog. A 3rd even.
- Since they are your friends, ask them to tag along one day and just take shots, that you can still give to them and critique and it will also show you an idea of what you need.
- Don't pay attention to what they or any other photographer has right now ... because then you and your wife will go broke trying to catch up.
- You need to see what your gear is limiting you in the content and style you are shooting. And once you find the greatest limit, find the next item to eliminate that.
- Do another gig, and find more limitations.
Soon you will find all of the strong limitations and only have a few to worry about, which can wait until you have mastered the new tools you have acquired and the fear of your original major limitations are eradicated.
That is considered gradual succession and a good start.

I must've missed that you we're selling one lol
2011 SE 02-07-2012, 06:17 PM I agree with Ray about taking the gradual road. I keep using equipment until I hit some limitation, work around the limitation for a while, then upgrade once money is available. I mean I don't even have close to the best lenses available, but I don't need them right now since the ones I have still do the job.
As for weddings, I just started out by contacting a photographer I knew, told him I was interested in helping out/learning, and that I was willing to do it for free. Before you know it, he had me using his equipment, shooting as a backup, and getting paid for it. Continually go out of your comfort zone and you'll keep learning. I'm actually thinking about taking the same approach to car repair. I'll probably contact a place in the spring and offer to work for free on weekends. Sure, I'll start out doing crappy work at first, but at least I have my foot in the door.
And another thing I've learned, which has opened so many doors for me - don't immediately say no if a job or request is outside your perfect skill set, or is fairly inconvenient. You NEVER know where it will lead. That's how I got into shooting music videos.

Yea, that's a good start 2011 SE. When it comes to photography, you have start on the bottom of the barrel and below not getting paid. But before you know it, you will be shooting the goods and getting comped for the work.
I am going back to my commercial/entertainment side and video as well. Decided to jump back on a new Pro-Video Camera. My business account (crosses-fingers) will have enough credit to get me the video camera I want to grow with.

tukaniSVT 02-12-2012, 05:34 PM What is it about the 50 that bothers you?
I know with the Prime lenses, you either like the look or you don't.
Im interested to hear your issues/dislikes about the prime lens.

Mostly the minimum focal distance. I tend to side to a more walk around friendly lens than lenses that are good for one thing. The only time I use it now is when I need to step to 1.8 instead of 3.8 or even 2.8.
I have even put my adapter on it, to essentially make it a 22.5mm lens and its still rather bland to me.
Granted, this thread made me dust the nifty fifty off and use it today.

The 70-200 though, I love when I can justify its use.

tukaniSVT 02-13-2012, 08:54 PM That is definitely the challenge of Primes, having to move to get the shot. For some it's a good thing for others it's a hassle.
I believe primes are a great way to learn move for your composition.
BTW, I don't think your photos look too bad. The flower maybe a tad overexposed, but it's still nice.

tukaniSVT 02-16-2012, 11:16 PM Gotta watch your focus Jason. On that photo, it is on the split on the bumper as oppose to the Z emblem or the license plate.

jmiller_1974 02-16-2012, 11:54 PM I see what you're saying now that you point it out. I think I need glasses, seriously. I'll keep shooting though, no matter if I go blind, lol.
tukaniSVT 02-17-2012, 04:23 PM Do you use the AF on your camera?
There are many times a shot looks very infocus to the eye, but when you get home it's not. Hard to tell on such a small screen.
So, utilizing the AF is not a bad thing at all and helps more than you know.

jmiller_1974 02-17-2012, 09:21 PM Lately that's all I've been doing(for the exact reason you mentioned), though I used a different technique for this because the Sun was behind the car and high, so I was catching a ton of glare off the new plates. I would focus on the plate and then pan up a hair to frame the shot I wanted. Obviously, this is a flawed technique, lol. It's a never-ending learning process, says the guy who has been shooting for decades and shoots like a noob...

If you want the plate to be in focus:
Get the dot you focus with on the plate
Press the shutter release halfway and HOLD IT THERE!
Now compose your image how you want it
Press all the way on the shutter release.
The plate is in focus and nothing else. Want the "Z" in focus? Do the steps listed above, just for the "Z".

You're not a noob Jason, just a person jumping into a new tool of your old hobby.
There is a gentleman I met during my gigs who has been a post-production editor for 30 years ... and when he and I met, he thought he was going to running a particular machine, well, the studio that we met at changed the system to the more new and modern system. I taught him plenty. We are good friends now. And we teach each other.
So, don't think you are a noob, these new tools will seem foreign at first to the veterans of photography, but once you learn the tools ... it's like learning to ride the bike again with new gadgets to make the ride even smoother.
Keep playing my friend, and you will find that sweet spot that you once called home comfort on the SLR train. [;)]

Charged SVTF 02-20-2012, 05:58 PM Well it was a Grand Prix of Historic cars and Porsche club racing. Not like LeMans Grand Prix or F1 lol. Ill be putting up a bunch but have some post editing I want to do on some. Damn clouds and sun fighting each other made it a hard couple days to shoot stuff moving FAST!

Have you tried using Shutter Priority or Aperture Priority to help you fight the change in Natural lighting?
When I have shot soccer in such weather, Shutter priority would help me keep the Exposure fairly even.
-Ray-
Charged SVTF 02-20-2012, 10:10 PM I try to control the ISO....I take some blank shots of the course before the cars come to make sure I like the image quality.
My T2i loves to bump the ISO way too high and it gets to be a grainy image I just dont like.
AdmiralZX3 02-21-2012, 08:48 AM It will bumb the iso if your iso is set to auto. Take it off auto and put it on 100 or whatever you want your iso to be and do either aperture or shutter priority.
I haven't had my iso on auto in.....2+ years. Lol
Charged SVTF 02-21-2012, 09:06 AM Well I was thinking the Shutter Priority will adjust ISO automatically. Woops.
Can anyone explain AI Servo vs the other focus settings?
2011 SE 02-21-2012, 05:19 PM AI servo is for moving subjects, for example in sports. I use AI servo occasionally for weddings when the bride walks up the aisle. By using AI servo, if you keep the shutter release pressed halfway, the camera continuously changes focus based on where the subject is.
Charged SVTF 02-21-2012, 08:31 PM Oh ok....I should be using that more often with the racing shots. Woops lol.

make that b!tch black and white. High contrast, with a vignette. I feel like the colors aren't a major part of this photo, the contrast is; both the contrast between black and silver stripes, as well as the contrast between the rock ship and body color. Sharpen the hell out of it. Also needed straightening.

AdmiralZX3 03-05-2012, 05:57 PM Triborough, I feel like your black and whites are flat, muddy, and not a lot of tonal range. Take that out of consideration, I like the composition and subjest matter of your images.
Did you shoot in black and white mode on your camera, convert to grey scale in post, or convert to black and white in post?

I did shoot in black and white mode of the camera. The whole idea of the challenge was to shoot like you were shooting a roll of film and I chose black and white. Post processing would be cheating.
