Well today, My good friend got his first focus. He bought it from someone he knew and until today. All he knew was that it was a white 2003 sedan with a manual.
Well today I went with him to pick it up. When I saw it, I was like okay, It's an LX, Its got an SPI, but it's in good shape. Didn't get to look at it much. But was telling him about the SPI and everything else Focus.
SO, he comes over later and we go for a ride. I'm thinking hey, this is in good shape, then I look at the pass. window, and see a sticker with PZEV. Thinking hmm? not in an LX??? sure enough, Hes got the 2.3 with an MTX in a base model focus! I never knew the LX came with them.

Is the 2.3 a duratech? I belive the SE is the base model. Although I've seen Zetechs in SEs, but I believe they was swapped in. I'm sure that was swapped too.

Yes 2.3 Duretec. Its a 2003 LX. Power NOTHING. no cruise, no CD, Nothing! I was surprised. I know the 03-04 had them, but it was rare and I thought it was only on the SE. I was wrong!

I still say it could have been swapped. Being SPI can go bad, I think when they go bad people just swap em out and just say forget rebuilding em. I hope to do the same but before it goes.....

I've never looked it up I thought duratch was a 2nd gen motor.

No it's stock. Previous owner bought it new. Just rolled 100k. Thought it was cool he had a base focus with an ST drive-train.

Is it a hatch? All first gen hatches and wagons came with a Zetec. Except for this guys lol.

Apparently it don't matter what model or year it is you can get any motor you wanted in it. Except the SVT zetec. I'm just going by what I've seen or read on here. How I got the short end of the stick is beyond me.

not all first gen sedans had the SPI. there are plenty of them that came with zetec from the factory. and there are also quite a few 03-04's that have the 2.3 duratec. i just didn't realize that came in the LX

Yea I know that my old neighbor had a ZTS which had the zetec. I just thought the SE was base and came with a SPI.

SPI was standard but zetec was an available option.

and i also just read that the 2.3 was optional in california, massachusetts, new york, vermont, and maine in 2003 and then in all states in 2004.

Wow ok.....

Since the first production model, all sedans came with either a zetec or SPI. The ZTS was a zetec only, along with all the hatches.

In 2003, the 2.3 duratec came out in PZEV sedans for above mentioned states. being economy based I'm not surprised at all that it came in an LX. I've seen zetecs and SPI's in LX and SE models as well.

In certain states, you could get a P-ZEV 2.3 in any Focus (except SVT of course) - for model years 2003 and 2004.

In California I bought my 2003 ZTW wagon, and I bought my daughter her 2004 ZX3 5-speed. Both with the PZEV 2.3.

There were first gen hatches and wagons with duratecs as well. I.e. any hatch or wagon sold in California in 2004 and possibly 2003

Do a CARFAX check of the VIN # and see if it was sold in CA or other states where the PZ motor was required.

Aww. It's funny because that's what I told him. It was a stock sleeper lol. and yes I looked it up. the vehicle came from Massachusetts. still cool to see an ST drivetrain in a base focus.

If its got a Z in the 8th place on the VIN, the car came originally with the 2.3
