I am not a huge car guy so I need someone to fill me in. A few weeks ago I ordered a 2012 Focus Hatch Titanium. I know it also has a Sport Mode which will shift the gears a little faster. My questions is where does the ability to 'manually' changes gears come into play? Can I only change them in sport mode or can I been in Drive? Or is sport mode the 'manual' mode. Also, what if you dont change gears fast enough will it do it automatically? Lastly, about how much less mpg are people getting when they use sport mode compared to drive?

You can only use the SelectShift when in Sport Mode. I haven't played with mine much but I don't think it will change gears for you once you start doing it, it bounces off the rev limiter. On the flip side, placing it in Sport Mode but not touching the SelectShift button keeps it automatically shifting but makes the shift points very sporty, including rev-matching downshifts under braking. It does not shift any quicker in Sport Mode over regular as both are practically instant.

as warneej said you can only manually shift in sport mode. it will auto-shift if you let it get close to the red-line.
if you let it auto-shift in sport you won't see a huge mpg drop, 2-4 from what i read. if you manually shift it, well, your mpg is going to be based on how well you do, but don't expect yourself to get a sudden +5mpg to the vehicle. the regular drive mode is programmed on the side of economy and is already pushing the mpg. the sport mode tips it over for pickup a little, but not a lot. you won't suddenly find yourself in a race car either. really a lot more of a gimmick than anything else. i'm just glad the steering wheel doesn't have ugly paddle shifters, it's already crowded enough as is!
