: Speed and gas mileage?
revolutionregained 08-20-2011, 02:26 AM So ive been seeing alot of posts about people babying there cars to get good gas mileage. I was wondering everyones thoughts on this.
I take a trip to my old neighborhood every couple weeks. Round trip is around 120 miles.
I tend to speed, like 80-87ish the whole time (mostly night driving) and i use a little less than a quarter tank. (3 gallons)
Thats a little more than 40 mpg.
How do i get such good mpg when people have to baby it to get 30mpg?
DJ2BIG 08-20-2011, 02:45 AM maybe you are buying gas without ethenol
wesley4x4 08-20-2011, 02:45 AM the following conclusions are...
1.you prius swapped your focus
2.witchcraft
lscrx 08-20-2011, 03:52 AM That's a highly inaccurate way to calculate fuel economy... so you're probably not getting 40mpgs.

iminhell 08-20-2011, 04:02 AM No. It probably is accurate.
The problem is others are calculating average mileage. Getting up to speed takes more fuel than sustaining a speed. So if you'd go on a interstate trip where you didn't stop you'd get good mileage. I've got ~50mpg with mine on the interstate, years and years ago. But my average was 28mpg.

Thats around what i was thinking.

I go to chevron, no where odd i swear lol
#1fordfan 08-20-2011, 03:40 PM maybe math isn't your strongest subject?lol
raycer 08-20-2011, 03:47 PM It's easy. Your not getting 40 mpg (us) at 80 plus mph.
Try this. Fill your tank. Do the 120 mile trip at 85 mph. Fill the tank. Do the math.
benkap 08-20-2011, 03:54 PM One thing to note is that on my Focus the first quarter tank *on the gauge* tends to last between 120 and 135 miles, while the remainder of the tank lasts to a total mileage between 320 and 360 miles.
So, clearly my gauge shows the first quarter lasting longer.
You could check the accuracy of your numbers by filling up, taking your drive, and then filling up at the end to determine the real amount of gas used.

/\ I find that to be true with mine as well

That would be the accurate way, your gas gauge is nowhere near accurate enough to calculate gas mileage, measuring the volume of gas used over a known distance is the only way to get reliable data.

FordFan1265 08-20-2011, 08:51 PM On a standard highway trip with nothing slowing me down I actually show better mileage with the cruise control locked in at the 70-75mph range than I do at the recommended 60-65mph range... In fact my sweet spots seem to be just below the speed limit (56-58mph) and about 10 above the speed limit (70-72mph)... These 2mph increments seem to yield better numbers (+.5mpg to +1mpg) according to my observations than travelling at the speed limit (60-65mph). I know this is all based on average mpg, but it seems to me an increase is an increase whether it's instant or averaged... It's like my Focus is telling me it likes to go faster than the posted speed limit, and I'm inclined to let it have its way most of the time. Lol!

Exactly, im like hell might as well if it saves me money lol! And i have filled it up before and after. When moving from the old neighborhood to the new one i filled up my tank, drove there and back twice in a day (calculated a 236 mi total) and put more gas in so i didnt have to stop for a while. Put like 5.8 gallons in and it topped off. So it did calculate to my almost 3 gallons.
I dont do avg gas mileage because your mixing up city with highway mpg. City i get about 27.
