: Who else has heard about the recent MT82 issue..
Red Jay 918 08-09-2011, 02:22 AM MT82 = 6 speed manual in the 2011-2014 Mustang GT. its been going on for a while and i guess its finally making big news... even ending up on FOX. the issue is the innability to shift in to gears. the grinding really makes me cringe. the same also goes for the BOSS 302 as well
Component: POWER TRAIN:MANUAL TRANSMISSION
Summary:
2012 FORD MUSTANG BOSS 302 WITH 4500 MILES ON THE CAR. THE CLUTCH PEDAL STICKS TO THE FLOOR AT HIGH RPM ONLY ON THE 3-4 SHIFT. THE PEDAL JUST HANGS MAKING IT IMPOSSIBLE TO GET THE CAR INTO ANY GEAR UNTIL THE RPMS FALL AND THEN THE CLUTCH PEDAL WILL SUDDENLY SPRING BACK TO THE FULLY RELEASED POSITION WITH AN AUDIBLE SUCKING SOUND. I TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALER AND THEY CLAIM TO NOT BE ABLE TO REPLICATE THE ISSUE. EVERY SINGLE TIME YOU TRY TO SHIFT AT HIGH RPM 3-4 THE PROBLEM HAPPENS. THE DEALER ALSO REFUSED TO PERFORM THE TRANSMISSION FLUID SWAP TSB TO FIX THE CRUNCH ON 1-2 AND 2-3 SHIFT WHEN THE TRANSMISSION IS COLD.
its some scary stuff... here's some videos to demonstrate...

whynotthinkwhynot 08-09-2011, 05:41 AM That's terrible.
DougC 08-09-2011, 10:04 AM Hmmmmmm....
apagios 08-09-2011, 10:20 AM That's terrible.
While it is terrible, and I would hope Ford can solve the issue, lets keep some perspective here.
http://www.autoblog.com/2011/08/08/ford-mustang-under-investigation-for-transmission-issues/
----------------------------------
"The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has opened an investigation surrounding transmission issues in the 2011-12 Ford Mustang. NHTSA has received 32 complaints citing inability to shift into gears at speed. Around 26,000 Mustangs are being investigated because of these claims.
Regarding the 32 complaints, NHTSA filed this in its report:
Some reports allege incidents occurred while merging into high speed traffic and others allege that incidents occurred while turning left across oncoming traffic. Some complainants allege that the erratic shifting behavior almost caused a collision with adjacent vehicles."
----------------------------------
So while I do feel for those affected and hope things can be rectified by Ford, keep in mind there are only 32 complaints out of 26,000 Mustangs (manual only I presume, they have certainly sold more then 26,000 mustangs). That's a tiny tiny number of complaints compared to the number of Mustangs sold. Any defective trans should be corrected by the OEM, but we are not talking about a pandemic issue here.
save_HUTCH 08-09-2011, 01:14 PM Yea, ever since JPC Racing got theirs into the low 12's they found out the stock MT82 is not a good tranny. Very weak and will not stand up to any abuse, even in stock form.
autolite 08-10-2011, 12:41 AM I was looking at a 2011 GT model with a manual and the sticker said the trans was made in China.Gertrag is going down hill. The Shelbys are running Tremec.
BowerR64 08-10-2011, 01:40 AM There was a guy at a car show i went to a few weeks ago and he had an 07 vette. He was talking about tunes and his A/F when he got it.
One thing he said which this made me think of. He said from the factory it was setup for fuel economy and it had 1st and 3rd locked out of it. That he had to drive it in second and forth. I dont remember how he got into the first and third lock out but this post made me think of that.
The first video i though maybe it had some gears locked out. After i watched the other videos it does look like a serious problem.
Those claims of pulling out into traffic and into oncomming traffic on a freeway is scary.
whynotthinkwhynot 08-10-2011, 05:39 AM If the transmission in the new Mustang is made in China, and is failing, that will be some serious bad press that Ford doesn't need.
mmmoose 08-10-2011, 08:03 AM The PowerShift transmission on the 2011 Fiesta has exhibited similar low gear grinding/jolting during low-speed coasting. I've read several stories where Ford had offered to swap new trannies for Fiesta customers with repeat issues, to presumably send the old units back to research the issue further. It's strange that meanwhile Mustang GT owners are getting the shaft. I guess it's easier for dealerships to claim abuse when we're talking fully manual transmissions.
Does anyone know if the 5-speed Fiesta/Focus is affected too? Or is this exclusively for the 6-speed Mustang GT? I hate seeing stuff like this because I think Ford has otherwise done a great job of regaining quality everywhere else. In a way I'm glad I didn't make any impulse purchases, but I still want them to fix their crap up because I'll probably be in the market for something new within a year or two.
Bottom line is companies everywhere need to stop outsourcing cheap suppliers. It shows how one wrong supplier can completely ruin an outstanding product and tarnish consumer confidence in the brand. There are no shortcuts! Take the damn loss and go with the better supplier and let volume sales boost your damn profits! Several manufacturers have learned this the hard way and they're still paying the price today.

Oh there's a problem alright...whether or not Ford admits it is another story:

Keep in mind this is from a Chevy board so there's certainly some bias but the facts cannot be denied...WTF were they thinking with a Chinese transmission?[scratch]
kylesvt720 08-11-2011, 10:50 AM Seems like it would be a clutch issue tho? Sure sounds like the clutch isn't engaging fully?
1stCarFocus 08-11-2011, 11:09 AM Whoa man, that doesn't look good. I feel sorry for the owners, and hope Ford gets off it's @55 and fixes it. Then never uses crappy parts again.
ajmorell 08-11-2011, 11:13 AM If it was a clutch issue it wouldn't happen only in second gear.

Or shift linkage? Either way it sucks bad, I was debating getting an 11/12 Mustang V6, this has me worried.
a351must2 08-11-2011, 01:18 PM I daily drive a MT82 trans Mustang and it's shifted great for 13K miles so far.
I'd say it's a quality control issue and possibly some driver issues. There's a whole lot of MT82 Mustangs out there that aren't having problems, but those of us without issues don't complain on the internet.
Following the message boards, I know of one guy that is on his 3rd transmission and still having the same issues ... in his case, I believe the one common part in the equation needs replaced (the driver). Others make it sound like they have a legitimate issue and are not happy with how their dealer has treated them. I'm sure there's some truth in there being a problem, but have to stick to not believing everything I read on the internet as being the absolute truth.
I'll just stick with being happy with mine that still shifts better than any other stick shift I've had that can handle more than 200hp.

Does the v6 use the same MT82 transmission?

Yeah, there's always that. I'm sure there are some idiots out there who either don't know how to drive a stick or beat the hell out of their car that are part of that population having issues, but I would be willing to be they are not the majority.
kylesvt720 08-11-2011, 02:09 PM I think the V6 does, but don't quote me on this. I know both V6 and V8 owners have complained. I just with they put a Tremac 6 speed in it, like the Gt500, and Camaros have.

Probably because it would make sense [:D]
