: possibly getting a RX-8 to replace the focus
Ambergold09 07-13-2011, 09:29 PM i just test drove a 2008 40th Anniversary RX-8.

if i can get the payments the same or lower on this car it's a done deal.
Duffman355 07-13-2011, 09:37 PM tis pretty
Ehbnerohraa 07-13-2011, 10:22 PM So jealous !
Nik00117 07-13-2011, 11:27 PM Do not focus on payments, sure the dealership can get you lower payments on a 84 month loan doesn't mean that's a good deal. Focus on what price you want...People who play payment numbers with sales people get burned.
Tom-E09 07-13-2011, 11:55 PM yummy!! Doritos motor
mikebontoft 07-14-2011, 12:03 AM lol Tommy I never thought of it that way..... it's a Wank(el) motor though.
looks good.
Tom-E09 07-14-2011, 01:05 AM lol if you look at them they look like doritos.
i have a cool program my buddy sent my on how they work and what not
WiscoGTI 07-14-2011, 02:50 AM I'm not a huge fan of RX-8's. I'm not sure what it is about them. They're just meh to me.
But if it's what you want, hopefully you can get it!
QR25DE_SpecV 07-14-2011, 04:22 AM The RX8 is the ballet dancer of the RWD world. Underpowered, temperamental, very nimble.
My SpecV never lost to an RX8 ever, and that's not a fast car.
I also don't like how the clutch has a slow release mechanism on it. Makes fast gear changing impossible. The transmission syncros are also weak as [:)][:)][:)][:)]. I drove one with less than 10k and it had a scratch going into 3rd with a 6th grind. I tried to reverse, and the damn shifter was jammed in reverse.
Very few people know how to maintain an RX8. 90% of owners under-maintain them so the used market is flooded with turds.
They make awesome race cars if that's what you're after. Some of the smoothest power delivery you could ask for, and the most incredible balance. It just wasn't the car for me...
lyonsroar 07-14-2011, 10:29 AM ^ exactly this.
I looked into these when I was in the market. Not really anything special about them except for the uniqueness.
However, those wheels are worth big $$$ if they're what I think they are. Are they the R3 forged wheels?

karguy427 07-14-2011, 06:48 PM Younger daughter's old '91 Camry wore out last January. Couldn't get her interested in a Focus for some reason, after she test-drove a $33k 2011 RX-8.
She settled on a 2005 RX-8............
QR25DE_SpecV 07-14-2011, 06:53 PM Another turd will soon enter the used market with a blown motor....
You should duct tape notes behind the gas tank door. "After closing this cap, CHECK & FILL the oil. Replace cap & replace dipstick."
I sure hope your daughter understands she hasn't bought a car she can just put gas in. Once the oil light is on, you're already in deep shit. Even deeper if she decides to try and make it home afterwards.
RX8 = Not a very good vehicle for the ladies.
MacAttack 07-14-2011, 06:55 PM I do like the RX-8, and I love the fact that it uses a rotary engine. I think they're awesome.
But the gas milage is pretty bad. V8 gas mileage, but with a V6 power. Unless I'm missing something, the rotary engine isn't as efficient as it could be just yet.

I do like the RX8, and I also like the fact that it uses the Rotary for historic reasons. What I don't like is the unrefined powertrain.
RX8 Vs Miata, I'd take the Miata every time. You just can't drive the RX8 the way it was made to be driven without blowing things up.
I think of it like MySpace pictures. Just because she's got blonde hair and those DD's, doesn't mean the rest follows. Eh, fellers'?
lyonsroar 07-14-2011, 07:06 PM For the North American market, Mazda revised the reported output rating of the standard and high power RENESIS soon after launch to 197 hp (147 kW) and 238 hp (177 kW), respectively.
My MS3 has higher numbers than an RX8...
I find this interesting...
Automatic versions all had low output/low rpm engines due to the lack of availability of a transmission that would reliably turn 9,500rpm
azdamay 07-14-2011, 08:22 PM Wow way to crap on the OP's (potential) choice of Focus replacement. To the RX-8 naysayers, has not pretty much EVERY rotary-powered Mazda since the beginning had various shortcomings? The rotary has always been a high-maintenance, gas-guzzling, underpowered (compared to a piston-engine equivalent) but somehow still loved, engine. I've said it before and I'll say it again, I was talked out of buying an RX-7 on several occasions (by a Mazda mechanic). I guess I don't regret not having the repair bills I would have faced... but I do regret not owning a car I thought was really, really, cool. I'm sure the OP will do what they want anyway, and an RX-8 is a far more interesting car than a Focus sedan... let's just be honest with ourselves about that.

Oh yeah - she was thoroughly (sp?) versed. She keeps extra oil in the trunk. Has good mechanic buddies. Also note: Her RX-8 is a 6-speed, not an automatic. We also bought her an extended warranty.
Buickboy 07-14-2011, 08:44 PM i like em a lot, id love to own a rotary some day but not as my daily.

Boo. Bad post.
Where are the forum ladies? ZX3 chick, etc. Could be a bloodbath in here.
bigjordan 07-15-2011, 12:13 AM Nice cars if properly maintained. Have fun with it!
Here is a recent article comparing the rx8 with the ms3 and miata.

My first new car was a 1974 Mazda RX-4 sedan. Turned into the wife's DD. A short while later, I found a slightly used '74 RX-4 wagon. So for a little while, we were a 2 rotary car family.
QR25DE_SpecV 07-15-2011, 01:56 AM Nobody is crapping on anyone. I swear everyone only sees the shit.
I just told it like it was in the beginning, and I wasn't seriously ragging on his daughter. Relax lol.
Kauai Guy 07-15-2011, 03:41 AM If you are definitely a car person and handy with tools, go for it. If you need something to just putt around in, look elsewhere.
I have2 friends with RX-8's, and one with a FD RX-7 TT. I never heard them complain about their cars. They know how high maintenance it is though. Every time they put gas they need to mix 2-cycle oil. Just one of the common mods.
But my god, do rotaries sound magical.
Paladin 07-15-2011, 04:37 AM i liek them, looking at an rx8 r3 as a potential replacement for my svt once its paid off. and i'm keeping the svt.
whynotthinkwhynot 07-15-2011, 05:51 AM I've owned 2 1st gens and 1 second gen, and some day I'll have a 3rd gen. No rotary gets good fuel economy, it's the nature of the beast. I was impressed by the completely linear power curve of my 1st gens, but the 2nd gen didn't seem to have that attribute. All of them handle very well. Once you drive a rotary, then you understand.
As far as a factor hot rod Sentra busting every RX8 out there, then ragging on the owners assuming all women drive ATs- well that's just funny. Try picking one who's actually racing you, like at a drag strip somewhere, and let me know how it goes when you find someone who understands that rotaries can spin to 10k rpm before really hitting a "redline".
To the OP- like any used car, you should examine it carefully, and use your instinct to figure out why the person who owned it got rid of it.

Absolutely. Amazing how flat the torque curve is.
I was joking about ripping on the mans daughter, why people take things so serriusry? And yes man, I've raced plenty of RX8's, and driven plenty of RX8's. And yes, they were races. Honks and downshifting involved, plus a dig. Also keep in mind that my car put out 163whp and 187tq on a Mustang dyno, with just an intake and exhaust. I had lots more after that. The car weighed 2700lbs, and I ALWAYS had fresh rubber on it. Not disputing what you're saying, but the fact remains I've yet to see tail lights.
Normally I would invite you down to Austin for a quick Airport run, but my Sentra is with us no more. I promise you it wasn't a slouch. The best kills I've had were 4.6L mustang GT's. And a V6 mustang on nitrous. Of course I've been absolutely blown away by properly modded ones before, but still cool!
The RX8 serves the purpose it was designed to do, but was castrated for the USDM.
Paladin 07-15-2011, 08:15 PM I doubt it is designed to be a straight line car, just like the svt focus isn't designed to be a straight line car. People racing rx-8ks in a straight line are doing it wrong.
Fattie 07-15-2011, 09:16 PM Boo. Bad post.

boo to your post. so there MAY be a handfull of women who acutally know how to take care of there cars , the other 99.9% dont.

However many women there are that know cars, IDK and IDC, they get my respect each and every time.
NCE.
Ambergold09 07-15-2011, 11:49 PM i looked at the carfax on the car. 1 owner clean title. it was used as a company car.
my best friend has a 06 RX-8. so hes gonna teach me how to take care of it. if u look at the pic i posted you will see his in it.....
jmiller_1974 07-16-2011, 12:25 AM Looks like a nice upgrade to Me, though I personally would rather have an MS3.
and I ALWAYS had fresh rubber on it
I call BS on that, because I've seen Your shit with bald-ass tires and cracked rotors, lol.[poke]
Ambergold09 07-16-2011, 12:36 AM i just don't care for the looks of the MS3...the new ones look like a catfish. the 1st gen MS3 were cool cars.

Listen here, I ran 'em till they were bald, but after that I usually got meaty f-ing tires lol. And hey, answer your damn messages. You've been off the [:)][:)][:)][:)][:)][:)]g grid now for how long? I got me a bad ass Nitro RC truck, and I've got plenty of fuel for us to burn.
I can recall having some ghetto brands before when I was broke, but before that I was going through a brand new set of KDW's every 3-4 months.
The rotors weren't my fault. Once I replaced them with quality stuff it never happened again.
I had one for a while. was a fun car, but not something I would get again. very underpowered and no low end torque (launching you either don't move and just get wheel spin). interior wasn't great for tall people. main issue i had with it was gas mileage. runs on premium and I NEVER got better than 18mpg. at the time that was $2600 spent on gas in 6 months for only 10k miles. couldn't find any local shops that wanted to work on it either. only the dealership would touch it.
fun car to drive, but not very practical.
karguy427 07-18-2011, 11:07 AM Speaking of tires. When we were doing research on the RX-8 prior to buying, we saw some comments (from reviewers and owners) that they seemed quite skittish in the wet - probably due to their rather light front end weight and wide tires- tend to 'float' over deep puddles rather than pushing through. I cautioned my daughter about it.
