Lol did this the other day. Only thing I am wondering now is, will dirt get in easier now? Should I do something with duct tape?! :D haha

But seriously I'm worried haha. I put some electrical tape on it the day I did it but figured I didn't want it screwing something up so I just took it back off like half an hour later

lol i guess i did leave this kind of point blank.

I was talking about the resonator that sticks out of the airbox on the right side (that i had no clue what was for to begin with).

this is where i learned it from
resonator removal (http://www.focusfanatics.com/forum/showthread.php?t=217235)

once i got it off, i turned the car on. nothing really sounded different. i went for a drive and put my foot down. much deeper louder tone than i expected. it put a big smile on my face. the great thing about it is it only gets loud when you give it the beans. even at half throttle it sounds louder. Joshamo does bring up a point though. there is a big hole on the side of the airbox now but it doesn't seem to cause a problem because its pretty much covered up by everything. and there's a little hole at the bottom on the airbox that lets water flow out. plus the air filter is above the hole so dirty air doesn't go through. i think it really opens it up. i could be wrong though. my mpg meter actually increased from 200 miles to empty to 215. so far so good i guess. seriously, try it out. if your not feeling it, put it back on. it takes 5 min. and it gave me the biggest smile on my face

Its a bit different on mine (guessing you have a duratec, I have the zetec haha I am new here still) mine has a bit more open space but yeah it should be fine =)

I changed my fuel filter the day after doing this and it was super gross (cut it open just to see) and saw a 2 mpg increase. I dont know if its one or the other but yeah I am happy.

Plus I did step on it quite a lot this tank just to hear the sound and still got the 2 mpg lol.

Will measure it again this next tank to see if its a consistent 2 mpg.

EDIT: I just saw you have a 2011 so that would explain the difference.

yea. i'm assuming its because there is more air finding its way in. especially with that hole. car runs pretty smooth for the most part. it doesn't vibrate as much as it did before if i put it in 5th at 1500 rpm with the peddle to the floor (before it was funny to listen to hehe). it hasn't skipped a beat and i'm still loving this quite when you cruise, loud with the push of a throttle action going on. not saying the car is any quicker. it just feels smoother

been reading up on some threads about this. think i might try to create an airway to cover up the hole and bring in some cold air.

driving yesterday was a rainy adventure. it poured for a good 4 hours and i was freaking out because of that hole. i went under the hood to see if the inside or anything around the hole was wet. turns out that thing is pretty much blocked off from anything coming in. also, the amount of heat on the right side of the airbox is pretty low compared to the amount around the actual engine. so far no problems

Is the hole on top of the filter or below it? If it's below, I wouldn't worry..

below, but i was worried water might find its way in regardless. im not going to do something thats gonna end up hurting my car. yea, i may be overthinking things but i dont want a plastic tube making the difference between a healthy running car and a broken one

I wouldn't worry - there is a drain hole on the bottom and you still have the factory ram air. If anything, it will push air out of that hole at high speeds... food for thought.

how do you get it off.. I can see a bolt but can't get to it.. Is it best to do it from under the car?

indy_11

You need to take the whole airbox out to unbolt it

hey just wondering if anyone else has a gotten a check engine light after removing the resonator. I did this mod today right before and a light came on as soon as I started the car up. just wondering if there is a fix or what because the noise difference is awesome but not worth having a cel on at all times. It brings back memories of my 99 passat :). Thanx in advance!

did you hook your MAF sensor back in and if it is locked in place? that could be the reason. i read someone on here forgot to do that once fixed the problem right away. lol, glad you like it though. it's not annoying at all. that's what i love about it

yes I made sure to put it back together the same way it was. ill double check it tomorrow morning. so there shouldn't be a cel right? just checking that's not something I have to put up with. yeah hearing it after I started it up immediately put a smile on my face :D

I remember when i got the stock airbox and resonator out, and trying to get that pipe running up into the fender out -____- lol but once i got my AEM cai hooked up it was well worth it, with all the empty space around the pipe for the intake it looks like i dropped about 15 pounds from under the hood haha

So quick update, I got in the car to come home from work, drove a mile or so towards the freeway and realized the cel light was off :D. So now I get to enjoy this free 5 minute mod and bug my dad who has a 2011 sangria red ses to do the same. Thanks again!

Awesome free upgrade. Just did it in under 5 minutes and I definitely recommend it. I can see how some ladies may think it's too loud, my girlfriend didn't seem too thrilled with it but she'll get over it. It's alot louder than i thought it would be, but it's a good tone and it doesn't make itself known under half throttle so i don;t see the loudness being a negative issue.

I came on here today to check something about turn signals, but I'm sure glad I saw this thread. Good looks!

So let me understand this mod, This mod makes your 08 Focus louder?. I am trying to understand why someone would want their car louder?.

Sal Fasano
07-24-2011, 02:36 PM
Because racecar.

I think it sounds great with the resonator off. A much better tone under acceleration.

indy_11
07-24-2011, 02:48 PM
If you don't want a louder car then don't do anything? It just has a louder deeper tone ubder hard acceleration. Its pretty quiet other wise. The car just sounds better. That's all. Please no bashing.

Now I just have to get on doing that lunchbox delete. A little more hesitant with that one, but I got in a fender bender recently, well, in my case it's an exhaust bender. I swear this car is as resilient as they come. Barely a scratch on the rear bumper after taking a hit from a Camry, and no dent whatsoever. My exhaust got bent, just aft of the muffler, right where I would have wanted to cut for the lunchbox delete, but as it is the exhaust mount is squeaking and I have some metal on metal contact, though nothing is in danger of breaking, it's just irritating. So I'm going to have to take a torch to it to fix it anyway, may as well do the delete. I bet it would sound good combined with this.

The only thing that sucks about this, for me anyway, is that, my car is an autotragic, and trying to play with the noise with that garbage tranny takes some fun out of it.

We do this to the ZX2's we make a pipe to go into the fender for more cold air.
The ford air boxes are usuallt trying to feed a 2.75" tube through a 1" openong(not too easy). This is a really old escort trick. I'll have to try it to my wife's foci she wants louder wants it to sound like me ZX2.
Here's what we do with the ZX2 with a piece from the plumbing supply store:
