: Slaying the Dragon....with video
revamp 09-26-2004, 05:47 PM Ok....here we go, thanks to my buddy jb10fan!
Okay, so Donille and I (and my sister and brother-in-law) took a drive down route 129 in Tennessee and North Carolina...a little section of road known as the Dragon's Tail. This road has 318 curves in 11 miles and attracts sport car and motorbike enthusiasts from all over the country. Well, Donille's SVT handled like a champ! (Thank God for the new tires!) We all had a blast, except my Bro in law who didn't want to take the Dramamine and ended up not feeling too well. Here's a quick video of one (of the two) motorcycles that just pulled over to let us pass. Yup, we were outrunning bikes out there!
One condition of him hosting this video for me is that you all "right click" the link and "Save as", when viewing it.

Here's a quick pic, though...

Dragon 10-14-2004, 02:11 AM I musta been nappin [:D]
RockyNBullwinkle 10-14-2004, 02:12 AM I don't mean to burst your bubble but that rider on the bike sucked. SVT or not a focus will not out run a bike in the twisties. You can never tell now a days what type of rider is on a bike, had it been me I would have passed you on the inside after I let you pass me. There are too many young riders out there that go out and buy a shit hot bike but don't know how to ride. h3ll I would of taken you on the outside.
Nice video though, I just couldn't live with that comment.
focusedintentions 10-14-2004, 08:38 AM I second you rocky on the bikes....ever since Biker Boyz and Torque came out, they've ruined what it means to ride. PS..i hate hayabusa's....congrats to anybody that owns one, your bike can go in a straight line fast, woohoo, how bout you follow me around a turn?
R&DSVTZX5 10-14-2004, 09:17 AM Great Video and that SVTF was just too hot! Minus all the bugs off the front end. [;)]
We had a blast, everyone should drive a road like that at least once in their life, it's such a thrill and the site's were beautiful.
Yes there were quite a few bikes there, and yes some did not know how to ride, we got behind one particular one that not only did not pull over, but was unstable on his riding, or so it seemed. I will not go into detail about the stupid SUV drivers that drove like they were on a tour. *rolleyes* LOL!
Now before the bike talk brings this thread off topic, yes I'm aware that a SVTF can't out run, nor out handle a bike, my ex has a bike, believe you me I've tried to race him out of fun with no such luck what so ever, even on a head start. [;)]
Besides it was just a matter of respect for a driver to pull over on that road and let the faster traffic pass, hence why the bike pulled over in the first place.
Now to get back on topic, my girl revamp got some skills, taking the turns like a pro, getting a good feel for the road and the car Amanda took on the Dragon's Tail with no problems. I more so enjoyed hanging on for dear life, listening to Sarah scream out her excited/scared profanity from the back seat while Amanda was driving. Really it was a great adventure, one of the best I've ever experienced. Thanks Girlie!
RockyNBullwinkle 10-14-2004, 10:56 AM ROFL 'Hanging on for dear life'
I like that, Anytime one of my friends gets in my car it's time to show them why I bought the car, CAUSE IT HANDLES LIKE A CHAMP. They always ask why there are oh shit handles everywhere in the car. I let them figure it out for themselves. Nice video, I'll see if I can't get some of the mountain going up 259 to Smithville from Poteau in Oklahoma.
From the video it looks as though she's a well equipped driver, she picked a line in the corners and stuck to it. That's one of the most important things, tracking through that corner and making the car go where you want it to.
PEACE
revamp 10-14-2004, 10:59 AM Donille was the one driving in those segments, I was the one trying to hold onto the camera and remain upright at the same time. My apologies for my moment of distraction when the biker pulled over. LOL I was watching him and forgot i was filming for a few seconds...
WOW...
19 megs...
downloading now
revamp 10-14-2004, 11:10 AM yeah, not 56K friendly....
lol
the download of that think is slow...
i have virtualy unlimited badwidth (i download some times @ over 2 megabites per second)...
so..the host IS slow...
[;)]
RockyNBullwinkle 10-14-2004, 11:22 AM I don't think she was knocking you, just saying that if you were going 56K it wouldn't be pretty.
It was worth the wait. Not very many real road videos around. Sure they weren't drifting or anything EXTREME. Still a nice vid though.
R&DSVTZX5 10-14-2004, 12:14 PM Yeah the host may be a little slow, but still a host none the less. I'm just thankful Amanda's friend was so helpful, sweet and so considerate by hosting it for her. Thank you!
Here are some pics from the trip, if interested.

^ Believe me that is just a small portion of the bikes we saw, and only one small corner of the parking lot at Deals Gap.
Some of the sites, although I was driving a little too fast to pay that close attention, what I did manage to see while riding and driving was breath taking and very beautiful.

Last but not least my baby, excuse the bugs, 4 hour drive up to Tennessee on a humid night tends to do that to any car down here in the south. [;)]

yeah..
nice video....
just saw it....
but its huge for only minute an 1/2
maybe should be compressed or something
lildisco 10-14-2004, 01:01 PM awesome pics and vid. I just wish there was some of that stuff up here close to us amanda. I'd like to see what my baby would do in the twisties. You'd prolly kill me with that damn SVT Suspension....[:p] ....oh well....all that i can hope for is the bank turn by my house that i can take 55+ in my work van and in my sedan [:D] (The one on Pyle South amanda)
untouchmind 10-14-2004, 01:11 PM dam this video is tight is a little bit too long and too big for the amount that it plays !
revamp 10-14-2004, 01:17 PM I just compressed it (a whole lot) and I need to wait for my friend to host it, but the new video is at exactly one minute long and just under 1MB. The quality is obviously not as good...the screen size is smaller and I went from 25 frames per second to 10. But hey, you can still see what's going on.
Here's the new, smaller video:
Small Video (Right-click, save-as) (http://www.ricksorrell.com/video/dragontailshort.mpg)
Kamui 10-14-2004, 01:38 PM With that many curves and length of the road, that must of been fun!!! I might just pay a visit to NC and Ten. just to experience it myself. Good vid though.
Lil PZEV 10-14-2004, 01:39 PM Go 26kb a second, go!!!
Damn internet.
Sounds like you guys (i mean girls!) had a lot of fun, and that road sounds awesome. I liev on top of a twisty hill... let's see, there's 8 turns in the one mile!
Can't wait to see the video though!
SVTurbo 10-14-2004, 01:43 PM My friends drives a slammed '88 Fiero GT, a HUGE group of those guys were down their last year for a rally/cruise. He said the place is amazing and blast. Check out the Tail of the Dragon website for tons of pics. There's some funny stuff in there....high centered campers and semis, all sorts of stuff.

tension001 10-19-2004, 02:09 PM i live just right down out of the mountains, but i go up there a lot. Its a very beautiful place to visit. If you ever get the chance, definately take it. The roads are great up there :) just wish i had a SVTF
SD_Focus 10-19-2004, 08:41 PM I have the perfect road about 30 miles from my house. When the rain stops in a few days ill go and take some pictures. Nobody knows about it either :)

I've done Deals Gap a few times on my old CBR, my old Ninja ZX-7, and the current cycle, but not in the SVT...yet.
I've also played in the whitewater from that dam on more than one occasion.
Much fun @ Deals Gap. It should be a "must" destination for anyone on this side of the country!
shadyninja 10-19-2004, 08:55 PM cool Ive been there ...I towed my kawasaki zx9r there with my 2000 mustang...Id like to take the svt there next

A good twisty road, perhaps...but trust me - it won't be Deals Gap.

My local twisty road, Mt. Hamilton road, no shoulder on either side, with a several hundred foot drop to one side and a straight up rock wall to the other. [:D] First annual Norcal Focus cruise there in almost two weeks...
Just a minor section of the terror:

Oh, that looks mighty tasty...
revamp 10-19-2004, 09:26 PM Speaking of tasty, I see that Lick Observatory is at the 'tail end' of that trail....now, that sounds like my idea of a good time!

Just head east on I-40 towards Knoxville. Take Exit 386B - US 129. Take that for about 50 or so miles, and you'll be slaying the dragon.
lildisco 10-20-2004, 08:07 AM Hold your horses their revamp....lol....take a cold shower or something....lol[;)]

Frush where have you lived bro, Try Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa and Missouri. Take about flat and straight. Now I will say that the old finance manager at Tincher ( who shall remain nameless) opened a track with his own money for autoX. He was a big Saleen guy. That's about the only twisties I could find in Nebraska.

What about wide open speed - was that safe and/or possible there?
