: ECU Tuning & Emissions?

I live in the state of NewHampshire where they plug a reader into your diagnostics port for emissions.
I want to SCT tune my Ecu for an OBX header I bought and it has 1 oxygen sensor spot and no EGR spot, so I will have to delete the 2 rear sensors, the EGR system and the PZEV air pump system.
My question is.. Will or can the states computer detect any changes, or does it just scan the ECU for any error codes??? I know it wont pass a visual check because there will only be 1 oxygen sensor =).
This is very important as I don't have a bunch of $$$$ to throw @ somthing that won't pass the computer test.....
Is there anyone ealse that has dealt with this?

I'm no so sure how agressive the emmission standerds are over there but what i think is just try it and if you dont pass do it under the tablw thats what I do and all my friends do. Because a turbo or even just tuning my car on California i would not pass smog check.

OK, let's say mattyix scanned his car, to say turn off the EGR. Would the emmission's people know or read, that the EGR was turned off & can they read, that there is a tune in the ecu, or not? [thankyou]

Come Inspection shops can see the EGR is turned off it will say "Readiness not complete " for the EGR and some pass with it turned off and say nothing

No inspection place can see you have a tune

It depends where you go. Tom is right, they can't see the tune. Their checking for DTC codes in your ECU.

I have ran Hypertech on trucks before without issue and they pass smog. I have even told the local smog shop I had a CAI on my old Neon and it had a CARB label. Tech said he didn't care, as long as it passed the sniffer. On my Jeep it passed with flying colors, I have a CAI, and bigger injectors, etc. Tech said again (different time) he didn't care as long as it passes the sniffer.

Honestly, this is how it should be. If it passes the sniffer, who cares.

Thanks guys, I'm ordering the tuner this week and we will see if it passes and what not.
Just out of curiosity, what can my stock duratec handle safely for boost Tom? I have looked at many threads and everybody seems to throw out different numbers.

Yeah that's a very sensetive area to touch since many people throw different numbers but what I do know is that people throw the stage 2 turbo charger from fswerks with 11 psi without any problem . So I probably wouldn't go any higher without internals.

Let's say if I baught that or the stage one, could I install it myself since it has the ecu tuner or flasher
Or would I still need to dyno tune... I'm. Confident I could self install, I have a year of auto technology school and spend my life around cars.

Yeah I have also heard that fswerks has detailed instructions on how to install them and back up any by phone , might wanna double check that, and yeah since it already comes with a tune you will have a free tuning session with fswerks if you add any other mods and wanna re tune it will cost abput 40 bucks .

But a bought tuner from tom you will recieve free tune updates anytime you add mods.

I agree, my buddy use to live out there and he put a CAI on his car and they wouldnt pass it without a little sticker that came with the CAI lucky he got it new but just didnt put the sticker on. So he had to go home get the sticker and attach it under his hood then they passed it. He was lucky he got one that even had a sticker with it. I think thats why some of these CAI kits are so pricey

Agreed , I wish it was like that , and yeah we cant even put a silly Cai without haveing a carb leagal sticker or something like that, it also has to be imprinted on the actual intake.

wow thats crazyness, I feel sorry for you guys. Out here you don't have to get carb stuff,or have a thing put on your exhaust, just have to plug a diagnostics coputer into your ECU port and if you have a check engine light it wont pass. Anything older than 1996 can have a check engine light and it will pass =).

So I could just install a turbo kit from FSwerks and flash the ECU and it would be good to go?

JoshInHisFocus92
04-27-2011, 03:36 PM
Yeah same thing here but with 5 million other rules lol , you also have to pass a visual inspection as well as the sniffer, by friend couldnt pass smog because he had a catback tjat wass rusty or something, idk i gpt my people that pass me reguard less just a little extra if needed , last year when we voted there was a prop that would lower the standards but it was denied... but [:)][:)][:)][:)] it I do what I want lol.

JoshInHisFocus92
04-27-2011, 03:45 PM
Yeah that's the idea . Just call and make sure . Cuz the complete kit has ( I'm assuming) everything since its a complete kit.

There are no visual checks here, I live in the state with the most freedom but the weather here is unpredictable and summer don't seem to long that's the only downfall. I'm saving some $$ to buy a turbo kit for next year.

yeah man the kit is complete with tuning. I just finished installing mine. It's pretty straight forward. Install, load tune, datalog or dyno, and Randy will make adjustments, turn up the boost. Get a wideband too.

so.. with the ecu flasher dyno tuning isn't required?

If you have a wide band installed, you can get your car tuned with out a dyno.

What is this wide band?

How much do they usually run and how do they work?
