: choosing a gauge pod locations
03-17-2011, 03:24 PM
I was wondering if anyone could give me their opinions/ideas on how to mount my new AFR gauge. Some locations could be for a single pod or I could go with like a 3-pod setup (see pic #4).
I've already pretty much decided against 7 because the visor would block it, and 8 because it'd be too much work and risk of ruining the project drilling into the plastic by the cig lighter outlets.
My a-pillar appears to contain an airbag so I'm not so sure #6 is a good idea.
I am looking to make a clean looking mod with good visibility and ideally the least work. I really like #1, 4, and 5. (4 and 5 would be 2 or 3 gauges in a row... I don't need said gauges yet, but I'll find something to fill the holes til that lovely day when I need a boost gauge)
There's universal gauge pods out there that I was going to look into using since the 09 focus has none on the aftermarket that I can find.

do #6 get a pillar. i love pillars. ahhhhh pure sex

But won't it hit me in the face if my airbag goes off?

that makes no sense...your airbag is like a baloon if anything it will push it up... it definately will not hit you in your face... or at least i have never ever heard of that.

+1 for #6 then. I didn't know if the older ones had airbags because the pods online I found are only for 00-07

the older did not have them in the "A" pillar. I thought some one made a vent pod for the 08-11's. I would look into that if you cant find a pillar pod.

I found these searching and although they are for the older models it's not a bad idea at all. toilet paper rolls and something to shape the thing with, cover it in pantyhose, fiber glass it, and paint it... indeed a neat trick.
though i think if the universal pillar mounts work i'm going to do that since it's only $10 for a single pod. Then I can figure out the fun wiring part

Or mount it next to your key on the dash so you can see it through the steering wheel. Or attach it to the steering column?

he doesnt want to drill plastic and risk ruining anything...

i know i was going to suggest that same thing.

warneej I thought about that but the dash to the left and right of the wheel doesn't look like it's quite the diameter I'd need to put the gauge in. assuming there's enough room behind it to push the gauge back. and I'm just not confident of my skills with power tools and parts that I don't want to ruin. Putting in the switch for my radar detector (seen in #8) was nerve racking as it was!

there def is enough room i know someone who has it. ill see if i can get a pic.

I like 5 but its a long ways to look
03-17-2011, 05:44 PM
here is the one in the dash and also by the shifter.

wow I like that, that's really, really clean!
I should be takin notes from Bradwhite!

I got to put my vote for (drunkyoda's) link there, yea it's a long ways to look, but I don't think it will be to hard to glance at every now and then with a slight lean forward.

what im doing is getting a Double Din stereo, taking out the display, and fiberglassing my own triple pod

who thinks i deserve some rep for that one? lol

Mike be sure to post a how to on that, i'd be interested to see it...our radios could be half the size with a touch display
03-18-2011, 01:47 AM
2, 4, or 6. None of the others.
03-18-2011, 03:59 AM
if it was an 00-04 id say the vent mod. maybe you can still do it on yours. never seen it
03-18-2011, 05:02 PM
If it were me, I would do number 1 or 6. Looks best there, and its an easier glance!

found this in the How To

that is neat, I like it. But I don't know about vent mods considering I use my vents a lot... I think i'll go with #6 just because it'll be cheap, easy, and reversible if I don't like the location. Part of it is trying to find a spot that I can run the wire into the engine bay... I think the A-pillar makes it easy.
Thanks for everyone's input tho, I'd still enjoy seeing other custom gauge jobs you guys have done to your rides for next time (I might upgrade it to #4 one day)

might be too late but steering column! I did that with my 3-3/8" tach and im sure with a smaller gauge itll be easy to read and not block anything. (mine only blocks the cruise light. who needs that anyway?) plus it wont stick out like a sore thumb like some of the other locations you have pictured

i say pillar looks the cleanest if you put it in a pod
