First thanks to everyone that helped me decide on a camera. I ended up going with a 9.3mp canon rebel EOS. It's a bit older but i only paid 190$!!! So im pretty excited. I have been messing with it all day. Check out some of these photos and let me know what you think. Good or Bad? Improvements.. that type of stuff.

These start out with the photos i most recently taken today and the bottom was the car drive home.

Not a bad start.

Few things, watch your white balance. You are probably using the Auto WB at the moment, but when you get a chance venture into the settings and play with the settings of WB(white balance).

Watch you focus meter in your viewfinder, a few photos here are a bit soft.
There is a meter in the viewfinder that tells you if the most center point is in focus. ... Or use the Auto Focus. It's actually a great feature and will help with focusing.

Other than that ... practice, practice, practice. Learn as you go along. We all do.

i think i am actually using manual white balance. I have been adjusting apeture size along with shutter speed. Also what do you mean by a bit soft?

He means the AF (or your MF skills) were just a little bit off. Do you have the AF set to middle point or are you letting it pick the autofocus point itself?

I'm not using Auto Focus if that is what you are talking about. I am using MF on the lens. Also i can tell that some of them are off focus but im still working on that. hahahaha (terrible right now)

also thank you lyons and tukani for helping me decide on a camera

looks like you used a flash in some of these pictures. Will turn out better if you used long exposure vs flash. Couldnt do that with water droplets but could always open a few windows. Always fun to play with a new DSLR

No probs drunkyoda ... soon enough the Force will be strong in you ... lol ... couldn't resist with you member name.

I agree with FecalRocket, the ambient photos can be nice as well. It all depends on what you invision. Sometimes flash is what is needed to get the end result or using the ambient light to get it and Sometimes when you play with both you can get 2 totally different looks with 2 great final results. Makes Photography more fun and opens the doors ... or flood gates.

well with that being said i have a few questions.

1. when shooting at 4000th's of a second the pic just comes out black. assuming from not enough light getting into apeture. i have the apeture opened all the way... how can i get a good pic with 4000.

2. my RAW format is coming out as a CRW. why?

3. The camera runs on a compact flash card. can i get an adapter for a smaller card?

Ya, Fecal i totally know what you mean. i played without using the flash also. i.e. the pic of the glasses. i think the turtle would have been better without flash.

There's a limit to how wide you can open the aperture. 1/4000th is only suitable for very bright situations.

i know there is a limit. lol. also if i wanted to shoot like drifting what speed would i need to shoot at?

If there's a limit to how wide you can open the aperture does it not stand to reason that there'd be a limit to how fast you can set your shutter speed in order to actually get a picture? In order to use a 1/4000th shutter speed it's gotta be like broad daylight.

I'll let someone else take the drifting question, that's not my area of expertise...

For example, here is a 1/4000th exposure, ISO 200 from my window. It is 1:40 PM. Full sunlight, no clouds.

Ok well i have not even checked my iso speed yet. so far all i have messed with would be the shutter speed and apeture setting. i guess when i go home time to go look and white balance and ISO. :)

I'm having a blast with this camera even though it is a bit older. also if anyone else can answer the last two questions that would be awesome.

What do you think of the camera i got? considering i only spent 190$! lol

(1) - Lyonsroar explained that well

(2) - CRW is Canon's Raw file system. Nikon is NEF (Nikon Electronic File)

(3) - No. What's wrong with shooting with the CF Cards? They are quick and the same price as the SD cards.

In the world of Automotive Racing, like drifting, there is no set Shutter speed. Like Lyonsroar stated, it depends on the lighting and situation.

http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee8/tukanisvt/Import%20Performance%20Drift%20Show%20Nov%202010/drift_show2010Nov16.jpg

Here I shot it at around 1/400th of a second ... somewhere around there. And adjusted my ISO and Aperture accordingly.

There really isn't many situations where you need close to 1/4000th for Shutter Speed, plus most cameras don't have the other aspects set for that kind of speed either. It would really have to be a crazy overcast day. Like in a dessert.

ok thank you tukani. exactly what i was looking for. also i want to use a smaller card so i can stick it in my comp. also when i plug my camera in to my comp the pics take a long time to bring over. why is that?

RAW files take a long time. And I think your version of the Rebel runs at USB 1.1 ... which is slow.

I recommend going to Best Buy or some electronic store and buying a Card reader. And one that reads a variety of cards, so that you can have one for all types of Still Photography cards.

They don't cost any more than 10 bucks and you can get faster USB 2.0 ones.

Also, how old is your computer?
