: overheating III
again.....
resistor have been changed incluing harness....
now it is less frequently but still happening...
i'm about to do a lemmon car claim and give the car to the bank....i'm that pissed !
Kicknzx3 10-29-2003, 04:08 PM so what has been done?.. the resistor, why not just make the rans run at all times if its that big of a problem?...did you ever check and see if the thermostat was installed correctly at all?
Lil PZEV 10-29-2003, 04:37 PM Yea, if it hasn't been checked, get the thermostat looked at... my car needed one recently (not Focus) and it was an easy fix.
i will take a look at the termostat during the weekend....
they change all the resistors and all the wires asociated with them..at least thats what they told me...
hey ed..how do i make the fans run all the time...?
what are the consequences of doing that ??
vanace 10-30-2003, 05:37 AM Hey buddy... keep bringing it to the dealer. Don't wrench on it yourself!! THEY need to check the T-stat. They also need to check the cooling system. Does it ever over heat on the hiway? Or just in town? If it over heats on the hiway, then it isn't a fan problem. I don't suppose there is another Ford dealer there, is there? Have they put the thing on the code reader? It could even be the computer messing up, not the cooling system. Put a bug in there ear about things like that. They have to look at the big picture and think out side the box.
Conditions for overhating...
1. When the car is idle for 10 - 15 minues...
2. If its raining and the car is moving slowly on traffic....(had happend 2 times)
the funny thing is that i have never see a CEL when the car is hot....
i have used 2 ford dealers already...with little or no improvement...
the first time the overheating started as before the "fix" like 2 month later....
the second time a differet dealer changed more stuff and its actually better than the first time....BUT the car is still overheating from time to time...
i think i will try a third dealer soon...i hope this time they finally fix whats wrong with the car....
thanks...
Joel
Lil PZEV 10-30-2003, 11:21 AM So you know, when my thermostat was busted my car never ran a CEL either.
jocus 05-08-2005, 05:50 PM I believe I am experiencing this same problem. Fluid levels are AOK. Oil is pretty new. My temp and oil temp guages have been going into the red when I am in stop-and-go, then go down afer about a minute of driving fast. My fans kick in sometimes, but I cannot tell how frequently. hmmm
yakimushi 05-09-2005, 08:30 AM My SVT had the same problem. Sit in it or driving slowly it would begin to overheat after 15 minutes. Driving on the freeway I had no issues. Took it into the dealer and they ended up replacing the entire fan unit. Problem solved and the fans are much much quieter now.
focusdemon 05-22-2005, 01:53 PM Mine just started overheating suddenly yesterday. Temp would be fine, then when the fan kicked it, it would jump past red. Apparently the coolant had a lot of air pockets in it, and no leaks, and fluid was full. After about three hours of them telling me it's not the thermostat, they come back saying it's probably the thermostat and they don't have any in stock. Now I have to limp around in my car until monday. Better now than half way to Arizona I guess. And with the dealers, I find that if you give them enough of a hassle, they'll damn near GIVE you the replacements. I got brand new rotors, calipers and pads from them after enough complaining about the squeal for about 4 months.
check the fuses and the fan resistirs....
thats what was going on with mine...
focusdemon 05-22-2005, 05:52 PM I'll do that. And if that doesn't help, I may just have to go knock them around a bit and get them to replace the whole thing [}:)] (that or have my girlfirend go in and work them over with the tears. She's got a good habit of getting things her way that way)

Is there any negitive side to doing this, like shortening fan life or any stuff like that?

Yes. As you note, likely less fan life. But more importantly, longer warm-up time and, in cold Winter weather, it is likely the engine will not warm-up completely, which is not good for gas mileage or the engine.

Sorry, keeping the fans on won't increase warm up time. That is what the t-stat is for. If the coolant is cold, the t-stat stays closed to slow the coolant flow so it heats up. Running the fans all the time will wear them out faster obviously, and make more noise, and be a drain on the electrical system. That is just a band aid. You need to find the real problem.
Dude i had the same problem about a year ago, i remember they replaced that little box with the holes in it above the fan, but that didnt fix it, then they did somthing else and it fixed the problem, i cant remember off the top of my head what exatlly they did to fix it, ill see if i can find some recipts to see what they did, i was also getting real pissed when they where tryin to fix it, Make sure the fuse isnt blown also, Maby clean the contacts, Its deffinatlly a fixable problem so dont worry about it to much, if need be turn on the A/C beacuse that will turb on the A/C fan and cool things down a bit.

Sorry, it will increase the warm-up time. What you say is theoretically true with the simple textbook explaination of how the engine/thermostat system works. But in real Life, it is not that simple.
The portion of the coolant in the radiator is cooled by the fans. As soon as the thermostat opens a bit, that cold coolant from the radiator goes into the engine and the "bottom of the thermostat temp range" stuff warmed in the engine prior to the first opening of the thermostat goes into the radiator... and is cooled by the fan before it goes back into the engine. Mmeantime, the oringinal cool stuff from the radiator, making its first pass of the day through the engine, makes the thermostat close again. While the thermostat is closed again, the fan is cooling the warm stuff that came from the engine, more than if the fan were not running.
It is not easy to describe, but having the fan running full-on during the warm-up period WILL unquestionably increase the warm-up period, since the engine is not warmed-up until all the cooant is warmed up, and the fan running during this process will be increasing heat loss from the coolant.
cpyder 05-24-2005, 07:45 AM ^^^ I like learning.. :0)
When mine started overheating ... the dealer just replaced the whole fan unit... was still over heating.... I just removed the T-stat and it stopped. Its summer now so I tthink I will be puttting it back in.
focusdemon 05-24-2005, 09:49 AM We decided it had to be botht the thermostat and the fan. After nine hours of trying things their way, they finally listened to my suggestion to replace the fan AND thermostat thanks to suggestions from here. [?|] I'm guessing the thermostat crapped out, and just took the fan with it. I'll find out if it works when I get my car back. Is there some other sensor related to this that may be screwing with the thermo and fan?
focusdemon 05-24-2005, 04:49 PM I finally got it back. Low speed fan crapped out AND the Thermostat was stuck. Took it for a ride, ran it from up to about 90, no problem, ran through the city through rush hour, no problem. Only took them 18 hours to do what I told them to do in the first place. [?|] Thanks for the help.
