: MS3 Interchangeability

I posted this in a couple other forums with no luck so I joined here hoping that someone might have some input on the subject.......

I have a 2010 Focus. It has the 2.0l duratec. I'm doing some research to see how many parts from the MS3 oem turbo kit would interchange. Basically, if the intake and exhaust manifolds will bolt on and even the oem top mount intercooler (if I can fit one under my stock hood, doubtful though)

I'm having a tough time finding anything about it. Hell, even noobs don't seem to be asking this question and getting shot down. I basically want to use as many stock parts as possible in order to keep a stock appearance with a slight boost in performance, say, 180-200hp? I think these are easily attainable numbers since my stock engine should have a much higher comp ratio (10.0:1) than a factory turbo car (9.5:1) even at a lower boost level.

I know that the MS3 has direct injection but isn't the head physically the same(ish) on the outside?

I never planned to do this to my DD but it just needs a little kick you know?

Your gonna have a cheaper/easier time doing it by buying the FSW turbo kit and doing it that way. The MS3 parts are going to be very hard and expensive to come by seeing as its still a fairly new car. Buy the kit that was designed for the Focus. The stage 1 on the 2.0 will put you right around your power goals anyway.

welcome to FF! i wouldnt think anything is interchangeable. besides the fact that the MS3 has the bigger 2.3L, i've heard the Mazda 2.3 is different (similar though) from the Ford 2.3L. dont knwo what the difference are but yeah (besides direct injection on the Mazdaspeed versions). while were at this topic thought i have a question of my own. not to thread jack or anything but are the bolt holes for the cam cover in the same location on the Mazda 2.3L as they are on the Ford 2.0L/2.3L?

lol, the fswerks guy in the other forum said the same thing. Thing is, even though it seems to be a very high quality kit, I want something that looks like Ford made it (even though it's technically Mazda)

I don't want a "sky is the limit" turbo kit. I just want mild oem performance for my daily driver. I just think that 140hp (at the crank) is just a little too mild. lol

Some might. I'd take measurements, or even take an exhaust manifold gasket from a Dtec or MS3 and see if it will match up. Factory installs can move the silliest things out of the way that you might not think of. For example, our fuel line runs across the top of the firewall over the exhaust. Now, depending on where Mazda mounted the turbo- is it far enough away from that fuel line? Do you want your turbocharger mounted that close to the fuel line without moving it? Purge valve too?

FSW has engineered a kit that will fit your car, and there are other manufacturers out there who make turbo manifolds, and you can get them to fit the ball bearing turbo of your choice.

Making it look stock- um- that's up to your level of skill and determination.

This isn't my first rodeo though. If the manifolds would physically bolt to the head, I'm confident that I can take care of the rest...... Come to think of it, I guess that's my only question really.


One other question is to myself..."Do I really want to void the warranty, just to go a LITTLE faster?"

I kind of think a better route would be to do a DIY turbo kit using parts specifically made for the Focus. You could get a turbo and manifold of you're choice, then make custom piping to make to make it look factory as possible. You can then use whatever, intercooler, blowoff valve, etc, etc, of your choice. You will have a much easier time finding parts this way than looking for stock Mazda pieces. Going this route might save you a few extra bucks. If you are bent on getting Mazda parts, your best bet would be to check some junk yards and with some luck maybe you can find one and pull all of the parts off it.

I build a LOT of the Mazda turbo engines , The Exh manifold will fit but the Intake will not as the Mazda has 8 Intake ports and the Focus has 4

I also agree doing a already built kit would be the way to go

A "LITTLE" faster? Even the stg. 1 would make your car a LOT faster.

They're ALL Mazda 2.3s, just similar-but-different ones (think LS1 vs LS6). Ford had nothing to do with the engine other than sticking the name "Duratec" on it.

Agreed, since all you are running is piping to the stock TB same as a cold air intake.

Actually Ford took the idea of direct Cyl Injection from the Volvo that has been using it for years and incorperated it into the Mazda engine as a test bed for things to come

After seeing how janky the factory exhaust manifold is I've changed my mind on this. If I actually go through with it, I'm probably just gonna buy the FSwerks kit and call it a day.

Thing is, I know that I could build it for much less I just don't want to invest that much time in my daily driver. I could install that kit in one day, or two if I take my time.

The problem is the cost/benefit ratio. For the cost of a rotrex on a 2.0 Duratec including all the fabing, pulley, belt, brackets, injectors, tune, etc... would cost as much if not more than the FSWerks Stg 2 turbo kit and you wouldn't have nearly the support for it as you would with the turbo kit. Let's say you want to build the motor with the S/C. You'd need to buy a new pulley, possibly new belt, retune (which will cost you another $300 or more), where as with the turbo kit, you just adjust the MBC/EBC to up the boost, update the tune (free) and drive on.

agreed, if your going to want to do a turbo use the turbo kit its just so much easier, the only way i would try and do the mazda turbo setup is if your going to go way into it and do a drivetrain swap from the MS6. even if you did get the ms3 swap your going to have to get some sort of custom hood done so that you can get some air to that TMIC

if you want it stock looking on the outside do the stage2 turbo kit and get a front grill kit so that it covers the IC, no one will know till the spooling!
