I just found out that my catalytic converter is a P O S and needs to be replaced. problem is i dont have 2000 dollars to sink into that stupid junk of metal. I was wondering if theres anything else i can do to keep my car running, or if maybe i could install a used catalytic converter. I need to know soon other wise i will i have to sell my focus which i really really dont want to do.

Just order a universal high flow cat from magnaflow and have a local autoshop weld the cat in for you. They will weld in bungs so you your good for emissions and oxygen sensors. I wanna guesstimate it will run you a little under $300, if not less.

Or you can purchase one of these, http://www.jayracing.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=257

What is going to cost you $2000?

My friend put that one on his firebird. No problems with it since he installed it last year. Just find the right size diameter for inlet/outlet tho

Moved to the SVT area.
(You had this in the regional forums)

Along with the Jay Racing HFC (High Flow Cat) linked above, CFM makes one as well:
http://focus.c-f-m.com/high-flowcatpipes.aspx
^^^They also have a stock "remanufactered" one available for much less money than a brand new one from Ford would cost.

Trying to make a universal one work on the SVT exhaust is pretty tough due to the "S" bend around the axle.
It's not just a straight through design whatsoever.
(See pics in the links for a better explanation)

i would also recommend a direct fit part over universal. you could also get a ORP (off road pipe, catless). You would make more power with out a cat.

He needs the cat to pass emissions in DE tho! I would just go with a direct replacement too!

can you get a waiver in DE? I know we can in PA and we are pretty strict here. WHen my exhaust was throwing codes and such i coulda just got a waiver.. i believe 150 bucks... ya it's a ripoff but you can do it.

I would suggest just getting a SVTF specific High flow Cat, I went with Real Technologies because I was getting service done at McNew's and they had one in stock.

A universal cat welded in will take some doing to match the stock cat pipes, its a weird oval shape, you'd probably have to have a shop fab some elbow bends and splice into the stock pipes near the flanges. Basically enough effort that it might cost more then just buying a SVTF specific HFC.

when i bought it... needed a new back seat, new ball joints, new skirts and spoiler, new top and bottom grille, new stereo, new floor mats, and probably the most expensive a new freaking paint job. my parents are afraid that even more problems will pop up now that a new cat unit has to be added to the list of problems.

oh and it needs a new window motor and regulator.

well i have the seats upper grill and cat if you are interested. If it makes you feel any better, my 03 SVT hasn't been a walk in the park either. Already replaced the LCA's, struts and springs, rear brake calipers (twice), rear hubs, starter motor, replaced every major electrical harness, stereo, speakers and sub, PS line and i haven't gotten to the the ABS or A/C yet and the ebrake doesn't fully hold. My parents wanted to sell the car too when we found out the task it was gona be to fix it, but it has turned into a fun project with my dad and I. Just talk it over with them again. You can prolly talk them into keeping the car. If you need help fixing the car send me a pm and we'll see what we can do. I've already rebuilt my car from the chassis up there cant be much I wouldn't be able to help you with.
