Your buddy has the SCT tool correct? Is it hooked up to his car? If so it does you no good. Also Tom will provide you his tune via the internet to download to your SCT tool.

Yes you can but the SCT tool an only be married to one car at a time. So in order for you to be able to get Tom's tune onto the tool he has to return his car to stock on the tool. Then you put it in your car and tune it. But he can not put his tune back on.

Yes I know its not a chip nor is it physicaly attached to the car.

When you plug a tuner tool into your OBD II port the tool reads and links with that cars ECU. A cars ECU has a unique number to it, just like a VIN number. In order for you to down load the tune to one car the tool is linked with that car's ECU. You can not use one tool for multiple ECUs.

So your friend has to untune his car, and un marry the tool from his car.

You get the tune form Tom and download it to the tool.

You plug it into your car and upload the tune.

Then you can not plug the tool into your friends car and use it until you untune your car and un marry it from your car.

You can only un marry and re marry the tool so many times. (like 5 I think)

So in the end your car and your friends car can not be running a tune off the same SCT tool at the same time.

You can plug it in and use it to scan codes but you can't upload the tune.

Have you tired that? I could be completely wrong here but don't think I am.

You are correct. The SCT will only tune one car at a time. If you tune car "A", and you want to tune car "B", then car "A" must be returned to stock first.
Also, each "tune" is written specifically for each vehicle. Like you said Chris, each ECU has it's own code, so even if you returned car "A" to stock, the tune won't work on car "B".

If you're hell-bent on sharing the SCT between two cars, you would need two different tunes written, one for each car, but only one car could be tuned at a time due to the aforementioned fact that the SCT will only tune one car at a time and you can't do it very many times.

SCT would never sell any scan tools if you could have one tool and program 100+ cars with it.

Bottom line is your friend and you can not have both your cars tuned off the same flash tool at the same time.
