: Chip is in
08-29-2004, 09:53 PM
OK, well I got my FS super chip in.
First thing I have to say: If I ever meet the person that invented the crap that covers the WHOLE processor board(including where you install the chip), I'm gonna smack the crap out of them!!!!!!!!![}:)]
Anyway, the main thing I noticed performance-wise, is the shifting. WOW the shifts are now very solid but not a jerky shift like some other cars I've had.
The whole engine seems to run smoother now no matter what speed I drove it. I really didn't get much of an opportunity to play around tonight, but I did some in town driving (35mph) and some very short highway driving(anywhere from 65 up 105). My car used to shift into its final gear(5th?)at around 67mph or so, it now shifts at around 75. I would like to run it a little harder tommorow to get a real idea of the changes. Also, I'm not sure how much difference the gass is making, I hade a half tank of regular so I bought a bottle of octane boost and added it before filling up with premium (93 octane).
Well, let me know if you guys have any questions and I'll try to answer them.
Oh, BTW, DEFINATELY go buy some very fine grit sandpaper and use it to help clean the stuff off of the contacts.

glad your liking it!
i do have a couple things i am curious about...
the first you probably wont be able to answer for a while, but i just want you to know i want to know. (did that make any sense??? lol) how does your chip effect gas milage?
did you notice any more get up and go from your little spi?
did it smooth out your idle like you were hoping?
08-29-2004, 10:25 PM
um, idle I would have to say no at this point. But let me drive it tomorrow, especially in the AM on the way to work while I'm still half asleep. I'm hoping some in my sleep dulled senses I'll all of a sudden go " Whoa, this isn't my car!! What going on here!!??." [:p]
Like I said earlier, I didnt really have time to drive it much, I had kids to put to bed and a wife to try and keep happy!! [;)]
Get-up-and-go---yeah I definately think so. I think that the shifting has a lot to do with that though. The improvement in the shifting on my automatic is amazing!! I kinda think thats what was the hardest to get used to when I went from my 3.0liter DOHC Taurus to my Focus. The shifts are much sportier now. I love that part.
I will keep track of my mileage over the next few tanks and see what happens. Dont count on a considerable increase until the newness wears off though!![burnout] All the time the next few days at least!!!

first things frist man.. lol. but finish up this review when you get to it.

[:p] I hear ya!! Some women just don't understand whats important!!
I will definately follow up tomorrow after work. (maybe during)[:D]
08-29-2004, 10:51 PM
i am going to hold you to that...
if there is no update tomorrow i will hunt you down.
you shouldnt be too hard to find... dark gray ATX sedan with a lady in the passanger seat with a big smile on her face....
what part of illinois are you from? i am going to be rolling through there the beginning of october on my way to N. Indiana.
08-29-2004, 11:04 PM
I am directly east of good ol St. Louis. Trenton IL to be exact!!
Surely you dont actually want to go into the heart of HOOSIER-DOM?!?!?
Most times if the whole gang is together, we take her Durango. So< I may be sneakier than I appear.
08-29-2004, 11:32 PM
no, i am not going to the heart of hoosier-dumb... just the northern part (a small town outside of South Bend)
looks like i wont be in your neighborhood...
the bad part is i will spend a couple days in ohio... and i am a MU fan...
08-30-2004, 09:02 PM
I will have to say my mileage went UP dramatically.
Glad you're happy. I'd hate to see the first guy (or any of you) have a bad experience.
And yes, the gel guy needs a bitchslap!!

The gas pedal is definately more responsive, normal driving & mashing on the gas. Today I drove quite a bit with the AC on to see how much difference it would make and it was a lot tougher to tell the AC was on than before. I assume most of this is due to the increase in fuel line pressure (waterboy?).
I am VERY happy with the results so far. Any of you with a decent amount of mods (air in & air out) should, I'm guessing, get even more from it than I am.
In closing, I guess the part that impresses me the most is the change in shifting. I had the aggressive shift at WOT and EGR disable added to mine.
Whats the govener set for on the stock program for max speed. I know the max speed limit is disabled by the chip, I just cant remember what the max was pre-chip. So far the best I have been able to to was about 107 - 108mph. I need a better day to try and really max it out.
Like I said before, I will keep track of my mileage the next couple of tanks and report in. I was getting around 27mpg before, but I have been driving like a mad man ALL day today.
Let me know if you have any ?'s.
PS--waterboy, if or when I find sticky-boy i"ll let you know. He'll be in for a first class a**-whoopin!! [thumb]
08-31-2004, 05:30 PM
stock govener should be set at 108.
glad you like the chip [thumb]
09-04-2004, 09:33 AM
OK, 1st tank of gas is done. Gas mileage this tank was 23.7 mpg. Of course I have also been driving it like I stole it!!!!! The current tank should be a little more accurate. I'll keep you posted.
Seems like every day I notice a little more how much different the engine runs. The chip is most definately worth every penny!!!!
09-04-2004, 04:04 PM
why kind of milage were you getting before the chip?
09-04-2004, 07:58 PM
around 27 mpg
09-04-2004, 08:51 PM
Also keep in mind that probably 4-5 times I rat the car 85+ mph for upwards of 5-6 minutes. These little engines are running pretty damn hard at those speeds. Its still pretty tough for it to make it over 105 though. Man is it good to know local law enforcement in a small town or what? [thumb]
09-04-2004, 09:29 PM
I have one question....what chip are you talking about and where did you get it and how much is it...My focus is a stick shift would that make a difference?
any info will really help me out..thanks
09-04-2004, 11:35 PM
He is talking about the SCT chip from Focus Sport.
check it out here: www.focussport.com
and even with the 5 speed, it should be worth the money, especially if you have a few mods under the hood.

I can't wait to see how it works with my car since I did the full-on port and polish. Head bolts, oil tap for the turbo, oil cooler, and mucho engine detail work. It's purty.....
09-05-2004, 02:42 PM
Looks sweet man!!! [thumb]
Are you piecing a turbo together?
I envy you, I can build one bad a$$ computer, but basic bolt-ons are about as far as I go where a car is involved. Oh well, we all have our strengths and weaknesses, I guess. Its just a shame how much I love to go FAST!!!! [?|]
09-05-2004, 11:18 PM
Yeah, making the kit as I go. I found that Ford Racing now makes up to 39# injectors with our plug and injector length. That was a major problem until now. I'm taking the SPI stock manifold and welding a T3 flange to it, then using the turbo from my T-Bird when I did the T3 Super 60 swap. The downpipe is from an Escort turbo, and the oil cooler is from an Aerostar 3.8. The intercooler is also a donation from my T-Bird, as I run a FMIC on it now. Piping will be custom, as well as plumbing for the water cooling of the center section. An HKS BOV is in the garage, and a Boostvalve the same as I run on the T-Bird is on order. I'm only going to run 6-8 psi, so fuel management will be a non-issue as the computer, chip, and MAF can handle it.

I have a question for grey-fury, I just visited focus-sport and they say it is a must that you run with a minium of 91 octane. I'm just wonderen what octane you ran with, because 91 is our premeium grade fuel which costs a pretty penny here. Thanks
09-06-2004, 09:12 PM
Hey Blueoval, I've been running 93 octane, thats the premium grade at the station by my house.(Phillis 66)
I'm about half-way through my second tank. I'll let you know what my mileage is after the second tank with more normal day-to-ay driving. The 24 mpg I reported before was driving my car like its actually a sports car, pedal-to-the-medal most all of the time. I should be able to let you know by Thursday.
09-06-2004, 09:29 PM
You gotta run good gas or it'll ping like a popcorn popper. If you don't want to always run "the good stuff", you can run the SCT in stock mode and it'll be fine.
09-07-2004, 07:37 AM
grey_fury so even though you are using premieum grade fuel it sounds like you are still able to get fairly decent mileage. I'd also think that the first tank or two you'll probaly be mashing the gas pedal alot so the mileage wont be what it should be.
Waterboy, is the chip able to change on the fly between the program your running and stock or would you have to stop to change the programs? Thanks to both.
09-07-2004, 05:42 PM
Yeah, you can change on the fly for the upgraded programs, but for some reason the car dies when you go to or from the stock program. I don't know why and Randy is scratching his head over it. It's never been a problem for me, and I'm sure you'll feel the same way. Odd thing though....
09-07-2004, 07:14 PM
For about how long is the motor "dead". I wonder if it shuts down so the chip can reset itself to the stock program or going from stock to a performance program. This maybe b/c when ever we do any performance mods we need to disconnect the battery so that the ECU can reset. Now I'm no expert so I may just be blowing so hot air so I'm sure you guys have thought of this.
09-07-2004, 07:38 PM
It starts right back up, no problem or delays. It's just a quirk of the chip.
09-07-2004, 08:00 PM
That sounds odd. So, the motors for a quick second the motor dies and then starts right up. Now does it do this every time peolpe changing to/from the stock program, or is this just a sporatic problem? And just needs more testing to find the problem. I would like to some day buy the chip but I don't wont to be running late for work and having my car not starting.
09-07-2004, 09:05 PM
From what I read with my chip(I only bought the chip with one program, if I would wantto go back to stock I would have to pull the chip) the only time it happens is when you change from program #3 back to stock(factory) on program #1. I assume that you have seen the FS site and seen the remote pic. there right? If not please refer to pic. see the different numbers, those are different programs you can run off of the chip.
In my opinoin, unless you plant to heavily mod your engine there is no reason to have more than one program on your chip. By heavily, I mean to the extent waterboy has, not just the basic bolt-ons.
Also, they can add programs later if you need.
My 2 cent
09-07-2004, 10:48 PM
Waterboy, can you back me up on this?
09-08-2004, 12:22 PM
No need for backup , you have a firm grasp of the situation and explained it perfectly. [thumb]
