Went to get an oil filter for the SVT yesterday, and i took the SVT Manual with me to make sure I got the right one, well the one in the manual is a Motorcraft FL-2005 W, well apparently they don't make that one anymore. The number that comes up now is a FL-400S. Just wondering what happened to the OE filter number, did ford just replace is with the 400S? Thanks for the info.

(searched everywhere, didn't see it)

I've always used the FL-400 only on both Foci that I've owned. I don't think that I've actually been able to find a FL-2005 filter which leads me to believe that manu. numbers were swapped somewhere down the line.

The FL-400 handles the job very well BTW

my dad's taurus uses the 2005, he has one in the garage, so i think they still make em!

As far as I know, the FL2005 is still discontinued.

Here's what happened: the 2002 SVT Focus manual lists the FL400S as the correct filter. Sometime in 2003, they changed the recommendation to the FL2005. It is basically the same size but had a better filter media and stronger check valve.

For some unknown reason, the FL2005 was discontinued in favor of the FL400S. Both filters are completely interchangeable and there's nothing particularly "wrong" with either one. They will both work just fine. [:)]

Ah ok, that's what I was thinking it was. Figured it was a simple number change mid run. Thanks for the info!

The 400s is fine like stated but the purolator L-25230 is the direct replacement for the fl2005.

2005 has an additional anti-drainback valve and a slightly higher bypass pressure according to what I have read. They made it to try and stop the VCT issues on the Zetec with low oil pressure on startup. Have also read that they have upgraded the valves on the current 400's which made the 2005's obsolete. I always used the 2005 per SVT supplemental owners manual but tried the 400 last time as it was the only Motorcraft filter I could get. No problems at all. Am going to go with a Pure 1 PL20195 next time...nice filters.

I use the Pure-One myself its a great filter. Has the correct valve inside. If you look at the fl400s and the fl2005, one of questions I ask myself is where is the valve that is in the center hole of the 2005 and not in the 400s. Then I ask myself why would ford get rid of the 2005? Money. 400s fits more cars and is prob cheaper. The 400s is designed to sit vertically not horizontally by the way.

I've been running the normal zetec filter on both of my svtf with no problems. One of my cars is supercharged, still no issues. I'd say you're good either way you go.

Ford didn't think there are enough engines in the marketplace to justify continuing production of the FL-2005. Supposedly, the FL-400S is modified over what the original FL-400 was. I've used the Purolater filter for quite awhile and it does the job fine. However, my local Wally World had a stock of FL-2005's, which I bought the entire allotment. Have eight sitting on the shelf in my garage. That should last me a couple years, at least!

I've been able to get the FL 2005 on Amazon. I was only able to order 2 a few weeks ago. But this weekend I ordered another 6.
