: Contemplating buying an SVT

Hey there. New here. Anyhow, for my birthday today my wife gave me about 5K cash I can spend on any car I want. I have a great DD, but I really want something I can tool around on and play with. I had my head set on a Mustang, but I'm more of a 4 cylinder person. I've always loved the looks of the zx3..and for an 03 SVT to pop up on craigslist down the highway is like a sign..
But before I make any purchases..kinda had some questions.
In terms of power what are they capable of? I have my heart set on boosting..either S/C or turbo..but I'll go with whatever's available.
Power is my main concern, I know they can handle already.
So are there a lot of options out there for you guys? got any websites?

Out of the box they dyno 145-148 HP and 125-130 TQ. Usually, I am at about 265 now with a SC. This car would be a good purchase if you want something to toy with it is really easy to work on. Try any of the sponsors that come up in the banners at the tops of the pages. There are several options and many websites.
CFM Click Here. (http://focus.c-f-m.com/) Is a place I like to go a drool on all the stuff I will never afford.
Massive (http://www.massivespeedsystem.com/) is also a good place for looking at aftermarket parts.

FSWerks in Socali is working on a turbo kit atm, its not out yet, but its looking to be a real beast of a kit, and quite the deal as well.
The general concensus on boosting is what you have your heart set on. If you are lookin for 250ish, the stock SVT should handle it just fine. Go higher than that, and you might want to invest in some stronger internals/clutch.
As for the SVT on craigslist. Obviously, check out the car before you buy. Buying a high-mileage SVTf can mean alot more than you would think. (Timing belt, 02 sensors, clutch master cylinder, etc) SVTs can be reliable, but it requres an obsessive owner who is on top of regular maintnence and whatnot. A poorly maintained SVTf can be a nighmare.
Honestly, post a link to the craigslist ad, and most people here can tell you whether or not its even worth looking at.

Get one they're fun to drive. I have two. One supercharged one with boltons. Twisty roads will never be the same for you again.

Check for brake fluid on the clutch pedal and make sure the clutch is good as they are expensive. Goodluck.

Hmmm, interesting. Most SVTs I've seen haven't been going for much at all. For some reason it says mine is worth way less. Pooey. Oh well, not planning on selling.

these cars are not worth anything anymore. said. 2 years ago mine would sell for 9000 in under a week no problem.
hell i sold an 02 with 61k in 08 for 7800 in a week

Damnit..well, the car was a salvage title. Really wish people would list that crap. The search continues.

I say get one dude. They are sooooo dang fun. Even stock. I'm about to turbo charge mine which really means more trouble. But for 5 grand you may have a hard time finding one. I got mine for 6,700. But i got a really good deal.
Good luck though. [thumb]

My wife owned a salvage title 4-door and it ran great for several years. Don't let that scare you away if the car checks out. Seriously.
I had a ZX3 until my son totaled it, and now a 2002 SVT - I freakin love it!

If the salvage wasn't from a front-end collision, you should look into it. Even stock wise, I don't think you can get a better performing/handing car and with the creature comforts to boot. It's a great little car with a lot to offer. It's great to buy them now since they are so cheap but bad if you are the one trying to sell them. I would never get rid of mine.
I bought mine new and 5 years later, it's still as fun as the day I bought it. Boost is always welcomed though [:D]

Moving to Texas very soon, going to 2 wheels sadly (gotta get my 50 mpg)... was going to sell her before leaving CA, but could bring her on down if you want : )
97k, mechanically great, aesthetically very good, started out at $6500 and workin my way as the market demands... haha. $5800 would be enough for me to bring her to your doorstep!
