: Turbo tuning
pattywaggon 03-11-2010, 08:23 PM I hope this doesnt sound silly but if i install a turbk kit myself and i decide to not go with toms tune, how woukd i get it tuned.
Like how can i have it takin to a dyna place.
I would blow my engine tryna drive it...
Any suggestions???
Thanks,
Patrick.
bmylez 03-11-2010, 08:57 PM Correct, you cannot safely drive it with a turbo kit on. Either you have it towed or...the ghetto way is to have everything installed except for the injectors and piping to the throttle body. So you would be running on your NA tune. It's not that smart, though, because you would be spinning your turbo with no boost reference. If you had to accelerate quickly for any reason, you'd probably overspin the turbo. People have driven on stock injectors with the I/C piping hooked up but I wouldn't want to do it. It's your call.
kjsoccerdude 03-11-2010, 09:32 PM Like he said, you'd have to find a way to get it to the shop like towing. Why wouldn't you want to go with Tom? Just wondering.

Well i wouldnt have to buy a wideband to get it tuned because the place would supply it. but i would deffinitely buy one in the future.
Toms tune is a great choice but this company my dad works at has rented a warehouse to one of the top tuners in the area in 2003 so they would be willing to give me a good deal on tuning.
p.s. my dad doesnt feel so comfortable about me sending 550$ for someone to tune my car that i dont know to well. I trust tom though.
kjsoccerdude 03-11-2010, 09:52 PM Has this place ever tuned a Focus before? Before I'd even consider them I'd make sure they have. Also, if I were you I'd want to have a wideband in my car once I'm turbo. It's only $200 anyway.
badass3 03-11-2010, 10:46 PM ^^^X2 it will let you know on the fly if you are not getting proper fuel and if you dont get the fuel, motor will not be happy
Turbo Turtle 03-11-2010, 11:15 PM you can drive the car with a turbo kit on with stock injectors with out unhooking the charge piping. you just have to know how to drive it. as long as you arent getting in boost the car is basically stock. i drove mine 1/2 way across the country to tom's like that. after a week of break in and a 17 hr drive i got it tuned. but i wouldnt recommend it unless you are sure you can drive it easy enough. its your choice im just saying it can be done.
get a wideband they arent just for tuning.
tom is a very trust worthy guy that does a great job. i vote for tom's tune.

what if i take the waste gate spring out??
Its like 8 bolts or so to take it out for me and then i should have little to no boost along with nit putting in the larger injectors.
I have 42lb bosch injectors, should i risk driving with them or is it too much??
There not very time consument to put in anyway.
Does that sound good ok, the waste gate idea or???
03OrangeSVT 03-12-2010, 05:30 AM If Tom does your tuning he can send you a "base" tune thats good enough to get you there with everything hooked up.
bmylez 03-12-2010, 05:57 AM To get him where? He wants to go to another tuning shop...so Tom wouldn't be doing the tuning.
Anyways, Patrick, as Tim said (Turbo Turtle), you can drive the car witch stock injectors and everything else installed as long as you baby the hell out of it. If this shop hasn't tuned a boosted Focus, though...could be iffy.
Not sure why your dad doesn't trust Tom. I don't think your dad realizes that Tom has been tuning the Focus since it first came out in 2000 and that he has dealt with thousands of customers and has a full-fledged business in North Carolina. He's not some street vendor with a shady website that says "Send money, thanks."
focusedaddiction 03-12-2010, 10:09 AM be carefuyl going to a shop if they haven't tuned a few focus b4! or your eng. may not live long.
Tom is also a very trustworthy guy in my experience dealing with him! & i have sent him about a 1000.00 for various services so far including tuning. plus he gives you free tune updates as you need, such as boost increase or parts changes[thumb] no dyno shop will do that for you that i know of.
please don't chance driving your car without a tune either, just not worth the risk imo.
700whpfocus 03-12-2010, 11:45 AM Patrick....please have tom do the tune gfor ya. if these other tuners have never done a focus before.............. i would be nervous! Besides, look how many people on here who has let Tom tune their car remotely!
p.s
no book in the mail yet!
that is why i always get and request tracking on things i sell or buy!
03OrangeSVT 03-12-2010, 08:25 PM LOL... I've dropped about 10k at Toms so far.
WHomever does the tuning should be able to supply you with a base tune to get it to their shop.
egbertnr 03-12-2010, 09:55 PM I too have spent a few bills with Tom, and would highly advise going there. Buy the wideband to bc once you have the kit on and tuned its great for monitoring for yourself. You need to keep an eye on that to make sure everything is going as it should.
mikealicious 03-12-2010, 10:05 PM I've spend just under 1k with Tom
and that was last night!!! oh man I'm excited. a few more parts and I think I might start my build thread! [woot]
sorry. was just excited and had to share.
/thread jack.

Yeh i know, i trust him but my dad feels iffy about sending that much money.
Im prolly gonna go with toms tune im just making sure what my options are while i have the time.
I think going with tom would be much much better because he knows focus's much better then anyone in my area.
