I just bought a 2003 svtf 5 door with 63k miles and now its due for an oil change. I am not sure what kind is best for the engine. Any recommendations on oil and filter?

Any reputable oil. I use RP but I'm probably going to switch to motorcraft on my next change since it's cheaper and I don't think RP is any better than anyone else.

Ive put every type of synthetic thats been on sale with a synthetic oil filter. Cant tell any difference. I just like synthetic because they work better and also because they last longer. Ive been going 7000 miles.

Motorcraft filter and 5W30 Pennzoil Platinum Synthetic (the oil labs love both). In a colder climate 5W20 or, if you're like me, in a warmer climate and I drive the crap out of it, 5W30. The filter is rated for 7500 miles.

I have been using Castrol Syntec 5w-30 for the past 10 years, but have tried Royal Purple a couple of times, especially when it's on sale. I don't really notice any difference. I always use K&N oil filter. AND, even though it is not necessary, I always change it at the 3,000 mile mark. I'm a big believer in, "Pay a little more now, or pay a lot later". I am the original owner of my 2000 ZX3 and have yet to have a problem with it. I've had my 2003 SVT for about 2 years now, and again, never had any issues with it. It all comes down to preference when it comes to oil, gas, tires, etc..., just don't cheap out on any of these things.

^^I can honestly say changing oil every 3000 is a total waste of money. I change my oil every 7-8K and When I had to take my motor apart it was totally spotless. No "slug" at all. It was very clean. The oil companies would like to make you think you need to change it every 3000.

Oh I took my motor apart at 75K

Mobil 1 5W-30 with wix, mobil 1, or motorcraft oil filters every 3000, just to make me feel better, and I don't drive it much anyways, so it takes me like 4 months or more to reach that mark

Motorcraft Filter, Mobil 1 5-30. I change every 5,000 miles because it gets driven easily. Straight freeway, almost never over 70. I can't remember the last time I hit redline, it might not have been this year lol

Mobil 1 seems quite popular so let me add to that list. Mobil 1 5w30, pure one or napa gold filter, 5K intervals.

I just started using Castrol Synthec 0w-30. The one made in Germany. This weekend will be my second fill of this. It looks like the engine doesn't consume so much oil now than before when I was using Mobil1 5W-30 full synthetic.
The motor is a bit noisier at start up in the morning but it comes back to normal once warm up. Probably because of the lower cold weight.
Anybody else using this one? Heard only good things about on bobistheoilguy.com

I love the Mobile1 synth...best oil I've ever used in the SVT. Castol...yeah, noisey! Remember, startup is where most wear occurs!

I'm with you. I've used Mobil 1 10w-30 until last summer (about the teim Mobil re-forumulated all their oils). Read up on the Castrol 0w-30 and decided to give it a go. Have used it since.

I change oil every 4-5,000 miles (depending on my mood...synthetic oils aren't too picky about mileage), have used the Motorcraft FL-2005 for the life of the car (bought a bunch when Ford discontinued them) and currently have 108,000 miles on my SVT. Not a hiccup..runs smooth, tranny/clutch still in one piece. I love it!

Synthetics are a good choice but here's some info that may help you (or just some fun facts). Synthetic molecules are smaller than that of conventionals so if you're motor has leaks, it will leak faster or of gaskets or problem areas. That being said, conventionals may be a better option for the old leaky motor since it will seep slower.

In your case, (assuming your motor is in good running condition) a synthetic should be a great option. Many people will vouch for various brands but what I think matters most is the grade of the oil. That ratings only tell you about the viscosity for different abient temperatures while the grade of the oil will determine the overall quality. Specifically, I'm not sure what makes the grade higher or lower. I'm sure its something simple such as the additives and detergents that are used. The more detergents you have the longer the oil will last. I think old skool oils used to contain zinc. I don't think they use them anymore but I once read an article telling about the benefits of zinc enhanced oil. Hope this helps with your decision.

BMW 5-30 synthetic and motorcraft filter, i work for a dealer and just save any left over from every oil change. It's supposed to be like a castrol 5-30 syntec. free is always nice. i usually go 7-8k on an oil change

I run Valvoline Racing oil (20w50) in all my cars because it still has a high Zinc content.

Zinc actually binds to the surface of the metal parts in the engine and it leave a "slick" residue so there is less wear on parts.... especially during startup.

I use Castrol Syntech 5w30 and the stock Motorcraft filter. I may try a Wix filter next though.
