Greetings,
I'm posting because my engine dropped out today at 78,000 miles. No warning or anything.
I drive a 2000 ford focus zx3 DOHC. http://car-part.com/ lists two different DOHC engines, and I need to know how to tell which one I have. Until then, I don't know which engine to buy.
Secondly, as an aside, if anyone knows of a more powerful engine that can be swapped into the car, let me know. I am having a service place near me swap it out for $400, but may be willing to pay a bit more to get more HP.

The 2000 ZX3 only used the 2.0L Zetec.
You could do a SVT or Duratec 2.3L swap. They are not simple drop in swaps they require other parts.
SVT at a minimum would require
harness
ECU
exhaust
Duratec
harness
ECU
trans
engine mounts
exhaust

If you look on that website, it lists two different 2.0L zetec models. I don't know which one I need.

Same engine just early and late version of the 2000 intake manfold.

Yup, only one option to go with. SVT swap is not worth it. Duratec swap is really really not worth it. Takes much much more parts and time.

Will either one work for my car, or do I need to know when mine was made to get a correct fit?

Any Focus Zetec will fit. If any parts are different the shop will take them off the old motor.

Ooooh, good call. I was trying to figure it out myself.
To get the most out of the SVT Zetec, he'd really want to swap in the Getrag, too -- and necessarily if his car is an ATX. (He doesn't specify, but the SVT PCM isn't going to run the tranny if it is)
To the OP, if you're just looking to replace your engine and be done with it, stick with a normal Zetec. The SVT Zetec or 2.3L Duratec are going to be more work, and you really need a full donor car in either case to do a successful swap.
