What is the difference between the MAzda3 2.3 liter motor and the 2005-2007 focus ST 2.3 motor?

Thanks!

Not much, but the biggest difference is the Mazda has VCT. There are a lot of tiny changes as well. (like an electric power steering pump)

and the ford 2.3 in the STs has VVT if I recall right

the ford versions of the duratec 20 and 23 are VVT-less IN THE FOCUS, that is why they have slightly lower hp and torque ratings than their mazda versions. the duratec 23 IN THE FUSION AND MERCURY MILAN are equipped with the VVT system

yeah, and that fact still annoys me to this day! really wish the ST had the vvt.

^^ why? it adds complexity at what expense? 7-10 more hp and 6 lb.-ft. of torque (and even thats debatable due to the SAE changing horsepower measurement procedures in '06)? 1 MPG better in the city? a claimed "more linear" torque curve? that version of VVT is kinda useless imho

lol, every reason you just stated is reasons i want it!

i mean, you just said '7-10 more hp' like it was nothing...when people drop 700 bucks on tunes (w/af gauge) and take on the added cost of higher grade fuel just to get maybe 5hp!

7-10 crank hp, wow...

Nem, you should check out some mazda3 dynos. They have a better curve but only dyno ~130whp like our 2.3

edit: I should say stock for stock better curve. Ours still responds better to bolt ons

7-10 crank hp, wow...

considering a 15% loss from crank to wheels, that is still 6to8 hp.

the curve is what is important to me. its why i am looking for a tune that will change where the power is, not just add to it.

VVT is a Biotch to tune for! Especially with boost. When that VVT kicks in under the right oil pressure the AFR goes leaner creating more power, however the ECU can't auto adjust to that based on fuel tables and spark timing alone, it needs it's own table for it. Since there's no guarantee as to where it will kick in due to it activating on oil pressure, it's a PITA to get right. FSWerks got there '05 Turbo Fusion spot on after months of tuning work. If you look through history, Hondas had the same issue with V-Tec. In 1995, if you had a Integra Type-R or GSR with the B18C5/C1 V-tec and you wanted to go boost, you'd have to rip that V-tec out otherwise you couldn't get a tune for it. Only a decade later have they found the secret to tuning with it. It's a major PITA.
