: 3.0 H6 anyone? (some questions, would love all input)

For the time being it's just research...... but I did get to do a little looking at an H4 engine (standard opposed cylinder, Boxer engine, subaru engine.....whatever you know them by) at work today and it was actually a lot smaller than I thought. The H6 is, well, two more cylinders.....

I think it will fit in my car. I may have to make my own frame reinforcements in the front but really nothing that should be impossible IMO. then as far as I know, most all of the AWD transmissions WILL mate up to the 3.0 H6 engine too. I'll probably have to use the steering rack from an Outback or something, but there are SO DAMN MANY of these things here!

as far as rear subframe goes......I have a few ideas for some custom fabrication, and I could probably just use the subaru's stock coil-over/McPherson rear strut assembly and poke it up to where the shock goes, then find the fuel tank from an AWD Jag or maybe an escape and see if it will fit under the car, and yeah.... there I go.

Suppose I have a few questions though if anyone AT ALL can help me out here.....

Sensor/Gauge cluster wise..... what am I gonna do, can I wire the sensors to read out to my current focus gauges or would it be a lot easier to just put all custom gauges in like those in John's (or whoever owns it now....) ZX408?

I'm pretty sure I can still run dual ecu anyway.... since it's been done, but Just wondering about the sensors that control the functions of the basic and necessary gauges.

is there like some sort of mini tunnel that goes straight down the floor pan? anything? like an indent or something?

and now, for pics of what I want to put in.........(very similar anyway.)

Now to be more specific..... these are the measured Dimensions of said engine:
* Across front: 32.25"
* Across body: 29.75"
* Across transmission attachment: 14.75
* Between motor mounts: 14"
* Front to rear: 18"
* Height, sump to intake: 25.5"

I plan on finding the ecu and engine out of a 00-04 (legacy) Outback. These engines don't have all that weird drive-by-wire, AVCS VVT whatever crap in them.... and of course, it will be the EZ30D engine.

and I just pulled the description off of wikipedia cause I'm lazy like that right now

The (Japanese: Subaru EZ series) was introduced in 1996 in the Japanese Domestic Market, in the Subaru Outback, and in 2000 in the United States Domestic Market. It is a flat-six, 24valve, quad cam motor with one intake port per cylinder. It has aluminum blocks and heads. The number of exhaust ports per cylinder varies. It is available in EZ30D and EZ36D variants. The later EZ30D used from 2003-2009 was heavily updated from the early EZ30D used from 1996-2004. All use dual timing chains and coil-on-plug ignition.

* EZ30D: 2999cc DOHC,216hp (161 kW) @6000rpm, 213tq@4400rpm. Bore 89.2mm, Stroke 80mm. Compression 10.7:1. This version uses one exhaust port per head, a cable throttle, variable intake geometry, cast aluminium intake manifold, and has a 6500rpm rev limit. It was only available with an automatic transmission. Found in the 2000-2002 Outback H6 and Legacy Lancaster 6.

I also have a parts guy that's just absolutely amazing at finding anything I need......I think he'll be a big help here since these seem pretty hard to find.

Guess I'll give it a morning bump...

hmm, why cant you fab up a custom housing for the subi gauges and use a subi harness, and fit that into the focus dash?

i would go with a turbo 4...keep the balance of your car and make more power...well actually i would just buy a subaru, but thats just me hehe.... putting an h6 in a focus will definetly be original though

I did think of the gauges idea actually....... I figured it would be easier after all and they do look pretty good.

I may have to go the H4 route if I can't find any H6's at the junkyard (preferably whole car) or if the engines priced are more than I can afford/justifiable for doing so..

which is alot.....

so I dunno though, gotta comb the junkyards here. I can still get any engine for $75

only problem I see is not a lot of power for a very large amount of work

Oh well screw it lol... I AM starting from an spi, and I want to do something totally different too (hopefully!)

Oh and screw this thread which is pointless now.....

WHY??

Because I'm getting a 2.5 sohc from an 02 outback for free from work [thumb]

you can twin turbo these things, right?

all i got to say is i hope you have a never ending bank account! suby parts cost alot!!!! i own a subaru legacy 2.5gt and everytime something breaks i spend $400 or more on just the parts. but i think u can make it work. good luck ur gonna need it. oh and if you need to know anything about anything subaru go to www.nasioc.com the guys over there have been just as good to me as the focus community.

Lol true but the junkyard is My friend and if I can't get it there I do get access to parts with no markup. :)

honestly it will be a daily driver/ spirited driver lol.

Oh but for the record, this engine I'm getting is from a customers car and I'll just be rebuilding it after i tear it down. It has rod knock, hence the engine swap into customers car. 2100 for the replacement. Damn.

Oh and ok I will check them out after all... I just thought they were impreza owners only.

the gauges for the focus can not be hooked up to work with any thing but the stock ecu and sensors.

there will be A LOT more work into this than you could ever imagine.

yes there is a tunnel under the car that a driveshaft will fit in. it may fit in it... idk. the krugel component kit uses the stock tunnel and sacrifices a high car stance.

you will have to not only build custom motor mounts for an engine tat mounts to the subframe. you will have to cut the factory subframe in half to fit the engine and tranny into the tunnel. the rack and pinion on the focus is mounted in the rear so it will have to me moved to the front. i doubt a rack and pinion off a subaru will fit.

as far as doing the swap i think it would be awesome. but dont plan on doing it for 2k dollars cause it isnt going to work out... if you plan it out in your head and it seems like it will work... plan on it not working and having to redo it... that is the only way i have kept my sanity lol

Good advice there.

I'm taking the engine out of the customers car Saturday, and will be photographing necessary mounts, the steering rack, pumps, transmission mounting etc.

I will be using (or hopefully at least) stock Subaru engine mounts so it will still be a comfortable ride.

Had another Subaru on the lift today, the same year different engine, and I was looking at the rear assembly and it won't be as hard as I thought, to install. When I'm taking it apart I'll also be doing some measurements of the rack, and rear subframe.

The trans I can get out of one of the many subies in the junkyard, for $45. Gauge clusters, well I'll just have to see what kind of Subaru ones there are.

Good news is I MAY have a chance of making it emissions legal, as it is out of an 02 and is still a 4 cyl engine.

Has anyone thought of doing a swap from an MKIVR32 into a Focus? I know its kind of the same car, but if you found a smashed one, I feel like that would be a solid swap. 6speed manual, AWD, and 240hp VR6 with one sexy exhaust note.
