Wondering if it can be done and if its a smart idea?

Yes it can, but you wouldnt be able to run lots of boost. Maybe get the car up 180ish hp? You can always boost the car, with low boost then do a tranny swap later on and turn up the boost then.

ehhmmm...
And why couldn't he make big power with an ATX??

I thought the ATX just wouldnt hold up to the big power, at least thats what Ive read on here. Im in no way a expert.

The ATX is a strong trans, however the MTX will be more fun in the curves. If you want to go straight, go ATX; if you want to go curves I would say do the MTX for sure. The reason I suggest an ATX for drag racing is a person will never outshift the ECU.

My motor went before the trans did.

If you have questions regarding the power limitations of a ATX I would PM 1turbofocus, he has tried many combination's of parts, motors and trans.

I drove my focus from arizona to arkansas for FF08, non stop. Raced in both the bracket and heads up categories, and raced HARD. Then drove back to arizona, non stop. Torture test for an ATX if you ask me considering I was using nitrous the whole trip...[dunno]

Are you telling me you think a stock auto is burly? Not sure what kind of autos you're used to, but last time I checked, the auto on a Focus was made to handle 100 lbs/ft of torque. Running 8# of boost will give you ~180 lbs/ft and that's the limit.

If he wants to make big power, he'll have to get a Lentech unit and that ain't cheap. MTX-75 swap is cheaper and people have run 400+ whp through a stock one.

Is the stock burly, no. Neither the MTX OR the ATX IMO. Can you run over 200 on HP on a stock ATX, YES cause I have.

If you want to make big power in an auto I would suggest a shift kit or valve body upgrade. I know plenty of people making good power with autos and a simple valve body upgrade.

My trans is fine and I ran 100 shot set up at my local track here as well as in Arkansas at FF08 because we all wanted to see what would fail first. Nothing failed, pass after pass. 1turbofocus and I were tuning the ECU in between rounds, we were adjusting the trans for everyone that was wondering that day.

^^^ What kind of times did you run with the 100 shot? I would quess low 14's.

My point is that you don't have to touch the MTX at all even with big power. A guy with a stock diff even ran 325whp through it. Show me an *untouched* ATX that can do that.

Ran consistent low 14's on a 75 shot

and for the post looking for an un touched ATX running over 200 hp, again I am right here.

I had a stock ATX that we adjusted with the tuner, no physical changes made. If you want a for sure number as to where to cut the power being given to your ATX before damage, ask 1turbofocus.

Maybe ask the guy that beat me in the heads up class at FF08 I am pretty sure he was procharged but I could be wrong.

Alright, this is beating a dead horse, but I didn't say over 200hp. A 100 shot puts you at ~215whp. I said show me an untouched ATX that can run 300 or even 400 whp.

I'll end the speculation on this topic.

Seeing as I have over 60,000 boosted miles on a stock atx. About 55,000 with a powerworks and maybe 6-7 k with a turbo.

No signs of failure no signs of slippage, perfect shifts.

It's all in the tune.

I'm not saying that you can tune a stock atx to run 300whp. But 220-230whp is not a problem with a good tune. I used a tweecer r/t to read my powerworks tune and I simply modified off of it for the turbo tune. I left all the stuff they worked out for the transmission. They programmed in the right EPC pressure & torque reduction shifts. Neat stuff.

Okay so I wasnt that far off in my first post. I said no big numbers but 180ish? and 200 to 220 is close to 180ish.

I think we/I accidentally scared the OP away. If you're still there, man, *it's ok to turbo your ATX*, lol.

from what i understand, and what everyone has been telling me. anything from a 75 shot down should be good. but im going to keep it safe and run a 50.

Run a 50 shot with a fuel safety switch, a rpm window switch (traction control) a bottle warmer with safety solenoid auto off. If you really want to get crafty get an automatic bottle opener and hide the tank. Get a 10lb btw, its more than enough for your car. With a 50 shot on my car and purging it I would get about 15 runs. In any competition that's a lot. You can always weigh your tank to figure out how much nitrous you have left in it. Your first couple tanks will go in the air mostly as you'll be purging it at any car that revs you[hihi] With the right shady lookin grin and a good nitrous purge I even get a vette to back down before the green one day. He was talking smack to the Saleen stang to his left, I was on his right. They were talking about speed and I told them if they were running I wanted in. They laughed , I purged and smiled, they politely said no way. I would have lost to either car I'm sure. [angel]

Yeah, I was gonna say...50 shot gives you 170whp? The Vette could have gone partial throttle, haha. Oh well, always fun to get respect in a FoFo.

I had a guy in a Mercury Gran Marquis roll down his window while we were sitting at a light and say "Hey, is that thing fast? You got a turbo on there?" It's because of my gauges, haha.
