If you have to ask how hard it is to do, then it may not be a job for you. Why do you consider it a POC?? These are great little cars and I am proud to own mine.

$20 bucks, took me about 3 hours and I know my way around cars. Did it go while you were driving? If so your engine maybe gone.

Shouldn't be, both the Zetec and Split-port engines are non-interference.

Really? Thought the SPI was a interface?

Nope, only the SVT and Duratec engines are interference engines.

SPI is interferance and will chuck a valve when the belt goes (most of the time).

Brindfan

No, it's a non-interference engine. The valve seat problem has nothing to do with the timing belt.

I paid $25 for mine. If you have a friend who is mechanically inclined, take it to him/her, much cheaper than a stealership.

Make sure you replace the tensioner pulleys and the water pump while you are in there.

how much are the belts for an svt? my mechanic wanted 300$ installed

Yeah 20-30 bucks for the timing belt give or take for the auto shop. I had to do the SHO and that took about 5hrs. Damn engine was cramped as all hell lol.

That sounds about right to me.

Agreed. Most timing belt jobs (parts & labor) usually average around $300-$400 dollars. Beat the hell out of paying $2000-$3000 for a new engine(depending on the vehicle).

Does that include the tensioner pulleys and water pump?

Then that's a decent price.

Yikes!! Most emissions related equipment like cats will set you back anywhere from $300-$800 dollars(depending on the vehicle).

Seeing as how SVTs are kinda rare be prepared to fork over some major greenbacks for a cat.

I consider it to be a POC because I have only had it for about 10K miles and I have had to replace the head gasket and do a valve job because one of the fins broke of one of the cooling fans causing the engine to over heat. and now 3K miles later I have the timing belt go. keep in mind the car only has 74K miles on it. the display on the radio is gone, the truck only latches part of the time. the power lock on the pasenger side door doesn't work. The quality of the body panels is about as good as a Coke can. Should I continue? My other car is VW Jetta with almost 4 times the miles and hasn't been nearly as much trouble and is much better quality.

It is good to hear the timing belt is some thing that won't be too difficult to do though.

thanks

It sounds like it was rode hard many times and put up wet. Sometimes it doesn't matter just how good a car is, if it has been treated badly it's whole life.

I didn't mean to come across as a jerk but, it just kind of rubbed me the wrong way when you started out with the my car's a POS attitude. Maybe I read it wrong, but then again, this is the net and we can't express true emotion. [;)]

Fix it up dude. I'll bet that it will be good to go once you get it right. BTW, I was under the impression that the Focus was more or less a German design and engineered car? I know Ford and VW have had ties for quiet some time now and I figure that they are the lifeblood behind the Focus. Someone correct me if I am wrong. Probably waaaaaaay wrong knowing my luck! lol

Although it's up to debate I've had two SPI's of my own destroy themselves after launching a valve in to a piston after losing the belt. I've also taken plenty of service calls about it. Interferance or non-....it happens. Good luck.

You are correct, but did you not see this post??

I felt bad for how I worded my post and I tried to make amends.....

Isn't the timing belt supposed to be replaced at 60K miles anyway? If the car made it up to 74K miles before the belt let go then it was overdue for timing belt replcement.

Focus timing belt schedule is 100,000 miles or five years.
