Gas is flammable.
A Joliet woman apparently forgot that truism. She used a cigarette lighter to peer in and check the level of her portable gas-can, setting her self and her car ablaze in the process.

The 27-year-old woman, who remains unnamed, suffered second-degree burns and a serious case of why-the-heck-did-I-just-do-that after the bizarre incident, according to the Daily Herald.

Police officials said the woman stopped at a 7-Eleven gas station in Joliet Tuesday night to fill up her portable tank. She placed the canister on the passenger seat of her car, pulled the gas pump off the holder and started filling.

About halfway through the refueling, she took out her lighter, lit a flame and peeked into the gas can to see how full it was.

Annnnnd boom.

The can erupted in flames, which quickly spread to the interior of her car.

Apparently frightened back into her senses, the woman then tried pushing the flaming car away from the gas pumps so that the whole 7-Eleven wouldn’t explode.

When the cops arrived, the car was about five feet from the pumps and completely engulfed in flames.

The woman was taken to the hospital and treated for burns and injuries to her wrist and thigh.

Now THAT is why I believe "Stupid" should be either painful or expensive. But why'd She have to sacrifice a Focus to strengthen My belief?[8]

just plain dumb.

in jersey, you're not allowed to fill a portable gas container if it's inside the car. you have to take it out and put it on the ground.
we have a 29 gallon gas caddy (that we use to fill the boat). we can fill it when it's inside the trunk only because the opening is hanging outside the edge of the trunk.

^^^In Jersey, you can't even pump your own gas.

I guess my point was, I was able to find the story on another web site (Chicago Sun Times) but there was no mention of the car being a Focus. In fact I looked it up on some other sites and the car is reported as a "1970 Chevrolet 400" (whatever that is). So why is the thread titled another "Focus" bites the dust?

The picture of the Focus wagon was the one originally used in the local news story. Perhaps the news sources took the liberty of using a "stock" car-on-fire photo to accompany the story. I did notice the Euro style side markers after I posted the link and thought it was strange.

Sorry if the news photo was not actually related to the story it accompanied.

Not only was I amazed to discover that there are acutally some computers in Wisconsin, but more shocking is the fact that some of you can actually find the time to get off your inflatable Favre love dolls to type something like that.

Amazing!!!

Even better is that I was not born anywhere close to the midwest, period. As for computers in Wisconsin, I own two, and my wife has one as well [;)]. I am a little surprised though to see someone from the Chicago area actually able to spell Favre correctly though [:P]...

I'm sure you can sense it, but of course, I'm only kidding...well, kinda...[;)]

No, my parents chose to live in Wisconsin...and now that I have an excellent job here, I don't plan on leaving any time soon.

And I'm sure you know this, but it's just as much fun for me to poke fun back at you...[;)]

Guys, the Darwin awards are given to people who kill themselves doing something like this. She came close to making that happen, but she doesn't quite qualify. Still though, she is a complete moron obviously.

....At least she did do one smart thing, trying to move the car away from the gas pumps...not many people would think to do that after they've essentially lite themselves on fire, lol [thumb]
