Big answer - good presentation, tasteful mods, and a lot of elbow grease.
Short answer - soap. Lots and lots of soap.
Seriously. Anyone can bolt on a million mods, fins, and bling, but a tastefully done car that is clean and well presented trumps. At the last FocusFest, there were guys that had mods out the ying-yang but didn't win since the mods and presentation were filthy or didn't flow well. Car show judges like clean cars. Don't be surprised if they "white glove" your car.

Body work, soap, rims, tires, engine and interior mods, and lots more soap.

Go to a car show and take note of what others big winners have done and out do them.

5x more money than you got ur car for!!! to start, you need an excellent custom paint job!

I agree to keep it cleen. Sound system and paint job are big as well. Rims and tires of course. Make sure any exterior mods (like body kits, wings, hoods, etc.) are tastefully done and flow with the lines of the car. A clean engine bay also helps. Some engine dress up. Maybe a wire tuck. Interior trim will help as well.

My how quickly people jump on a bandwagon.
What kind of shows are we talking here?
If it's something big like a HIN deal then lots of "bling" (*shudders). But for local smaller scale shows a simple clean and tasteful car will suffice.
I have been to shows where they break cars down to stock and modified. You'd be amazed how much better some guys can make a completely stock car look just by shining a few things up and hiding a few things.
So more information would help here.
BTW, I hate show cars. Cars are made to be driven not nit picked over by a few uptight "gurus".

Oh yeah also forgot to mention, if its peer judged then the line "Vote for me I vote for you" works a long way lol.

The problem with vote swapping is that, much like wife swapping, everyone ends up by proxy voting for themselves. The winner usually ends up winning with 2-3 votes tops.
