montum_81 05-13-2009, 05:47 AM hello to everybody, im a newbie to american car specially ford, I just bought my 09 ford focus coupe just this april.
my questions are:
1. how you break in your new focus and what lube you use for summer & winter season?
2. what is the top speed of the ford focus coupe coz it seems that it only have a 110 mph on the dashboard speedo meter.
3. why is that they use a drum break on the rear on 09 focus while the other uses a disc brake? "like the one that they are displaying in the show room, even if you check on ford website here in canada, they dont come with rear disc brake .
4. what should i do to remove my governor?
5. what are the possible mods & spec that i can do to upgrade for street performance.
thank you in advance for those people who can give their heads on this! i will also post some of the pros and cons that i can observed on the way!
whitefox 05-13-2009, 08:32 AM hello to everybody, im a newbie to american car specially ford, I just bought my 09 ford focus coupe just this april.
Welcome to Focus Fanatics montum_81. You can get all the answers to your questions by searching this site, but I will give you some highlights.
my questions are:
1. how you break in your new focus and what lube you use for summer & winter season?
There has been many discussions on how to properly break-in a new car, some people say drive it like you stole it, some people say drive it with varying speeds and RPMs and others say to drive it the way you would normally drive the car. My grandfather told me the last was the best and I have logged several hundred thousand miles on vehicles without any issues using this method. But everyone has an opinion.
2. what is the top speed of the ford focus coupe coz it seems that it only have a 110 mph on the dashboard speedo meter.
I believe the top speed is between 108 mph and 114 mph. I could be wrong on this, but that should be a close spread. IMO, going faster on the street would only get you into trouble.
3. why is that they use a drum break on the rear on 09 focus while the other uses a disc brake? "like the one that they are displaying in the show room, even if you check on ford website here in canada, they dont come with rear disc brake .
To my knowledge, the only foci that came stock with rear disc brakes were SVTs and ST models. Before 2008, I think it was an option, but I could be wrong on this and someone will definitely correct me. If your dealer has a showroom Focus with rear disc brakes, that car has already been modded, because it is not an option on any 2008 or 2009 model.
4. what should i do to remove my governor?
Why? Again, this could just get you into trouble and possibly do harm to the motor. This is programmed into the PCM and I believe can only be modified with a tune, which is not available for the 2008 and 2009 models.
5. what are the possible mods & spec that i can do to upgrade for street performance.
You can find this information in the sticky threads at the top of the Duratec Performance Chat. Look for "Read First: Duratec Performance Chat Stickied Threads". There you will find all the info you could ever hope for, even for the 08s and 09s.
thank you in advance for those people who can give their heads on this! i will also post some of the pros and cons that i can observed on the way!
Fortunately, most of the work has already been done. Your job is to look first, then ask if you can't find.
daveyboy 05-13-2009, 08:39 AM I broke in my focus by taking it to the dyno at 157 miles, auto crossed it at 1000 miles and spetnt all day at the drag strip sunday and it only has 1800 miles. So I would say drive it like you normally would.
I changed to 5w-20 synthetic at 1100 miles cause I think Fords 7500 mile first service is a crock. Besides the oil was a weird green color
Dont know about to much about the rear drums, but I was under the impression that the SVT's were the only ones that had them. But Ive seen an 09 with a rear disc conversion
A tune will get rid of the governor. Hypertech makes some sort of tune if you really want to get rid of the govenor, however the general concenses is that the Focus sport tune and Toms tune are the best out there, and the have more options as well.
So far all Ive done performance wise is a stealth intake mod.
gottaride28 05-13-2009, 09:52 AM for oil stick with the stock for now... till you break the motor in NEVER go from conventional oil to full synthetic you need to break your motor in. use a semi synthectic for like 3 or 4 oil changes then put a full synthetic in if you please. But ive used 10 for the winter months and 20 for the summer months
06Roush 05-13-2009, 09:56 AM yea, ive always heard that the first 5k miles should be on conventenal then u can switch to synthetic. and some of the older sedans came with rear disks also.
warneej 05-13-2009, 10:14 AM thank you whitefox,
to add:
all SVT models had rear disk as did all ST models. In 02 there was also an option for "AdvanceTrac" which came with them as well.
FocusSport is the only one that can tune the 08+ as far as I know. However you have to physically remove your PCM and mail it to them as there isn't a portable flash programmer for them yet.
Don't worry about top speed. You will only get in trouble thinking about it and especially talking about it on these boards.
Don't mess with your oil. Leave the factory in there for the first recommended service interval and then switch to a 5w20 full synthetic with a good filter after that. Most people prefer either Mobil1, Castrol Syntec, or Royal Purple. Some can throw down for Amsoil but that is uber expensive up front. Do not switch weights around regardless of them temperature.
And finally [welcome] and I cannot stress this enough:

:
Amsoil is around $65 (once a year) where you can pay that much for Mobil1 or Syntec in just two changes
voortrek3 05-13-2009, 10:29 AM Welcome to FF and congratulations on your purchase. I bought mine as a Christmas present last December. I drove mine as I would normally drive to break in it for 500 miles and then changed out my oil/filter and I decided to use the new MOTORCRAFT full synthetic 5w-20 which I really like. I also added a magnetic oil pan drain plug to help collect any small metal shavings that could be present. I do my oil change every 5k miles. Mods you can do to the car are found in the 'stickies' as mentioned.
warneej 05-13-2009, 10:41 AM ^^the block/head/rods/pistons/etc are all aluminum lololol
and Josh I do see the cost effectiveness of Amsoil, thats why I mentioned it was uber expensive up front
lightning2nd 05-13-2009, 11:49 AM welcome to the focus world
montum_81 05-13-2009, 04:48 PM thank you very much, highly appreciate it... i gain lot of information from you guys...
montum_81 05-13-2009, 04:50 PM somebody knows what kind of camshaft used for street but the rest of the parts are stock except ofcourse for the exhaust pipe and cold air intake... i already buy my pipe and cold air intake from ford racing ready to install after a full break in my car... thnx again....

They are pretty much the same as a 2008, with a few exceptions. Check out the 2008 + thread at the top of this forum and you will find just about anything you need. If you are looking to do some research, the search engine is your friend - on the forum and on the internet.

i've always been here for you man... [;)]
no homo.
Eklipse113 05-14-2009, 02:16 PM would you guys advise against modding it until after the break-in period? I want to put a CAI and a STS on it like immediately.
voortrek3 05-14-2009, 02:18 PM DO IT and just continue driving normally for the break-in period then change out your oil with a good synthetic and you're good to go brah!

There is one minor difference. For 2009 Focus coupes equipped with the 5-spd manual had their horsepower increased from 140 to 143-EXCEPT coupes equipped with the PZEV engine.

There is also some cosmetic differences, but some of them did not get on the lesser models. I looked at an 09 at one of the latest meets and thought is was an 08, because the bumpers were not what was shown in the early write ups.

True. It also depends on the trim levels as well. For 2009 Ford dropped the S trim coupe. Now it's only SE or SES. Coupes received the facelift and dark chrome injected head and taillights, and a dark grey grille to make it look different from the sedan.
whitefox 05-15-2009, 07:01 AM There is a thread on here somewhere where people were bashing the 08s because they said they were ugly and not Focus styling. Then the press releases and photos came out for the 09 and everybody loved them and still bashed the 08s (WTF). When I posted that I did not understand their statements that the 09 was a better looking car, they bashed me and called me blind.
I do agree the some of the 09 trim packages look hot, but it depends on what you are looking for in a car and one of the reasons I chose black over silver - IMO the black just looks better with the chrome.
mjd4277 05-15-2009, 07:11 AM I actually had a choice between either the Silver Metallic SE,Vista Blue SES or Ebony Black SES when was shopping for my car. I went with the silver one for a number of reasons.
1.Easier to keep clean
2.Easier on the insurance rates
3.Cops don't pay much attention to silver(staties have been writing tickets with a vengeance around here)
4.I prefer silver(3rd silver car in a row,lol)
whitefox 05-15-2009, 07:30 AM Mine is the first black car I have owned. I knew about the keep it clean part between the two, but the black just looked better to me. Plus I was not sure if Ford fixed the fading and peeling of their silver paints.
The cops in my area tend to look at bright and flashy, so they tend to watch the red and yellow cars more than the black ones, not that I care. I don't drive aggressively and I don't race on the street, I did this even when I had cars that could out run most any cop on the street, but I knew I could never beat the radio. When growing up I spent my weekends with my dad at the drag strip and fell in love with the smell of nitrous oxide and race gas. Plus driving a tow truck later, I learned very young to respect the popo.
sfm16123 05-15-2009, 09:18 AM ^ well atleast now if anyone bashes you guys you can send them a link to BradWhite's page.
people will always find something to complain about. you drive a nice car lol.
whitefox 05-15-2009, 11:14 AM Thanks, I really didn't like the looks of the Focus when it first came out, but it is something that kinda grows on you. I am a Cougar man from a ways back - had 14 of them at one time. When they changed the body in 71, I did not like it much, but it still was a Cougar.
Now it is the Focus, the performance mods will start when the warranty gets closer to expiring, already have 46,000 on it and some will probably start this summer.

yeah it's an easy one to fix up if you're into that... if not then it's just gonna look like a focus haha.
oh and if you ever check consumer reports compare the 2000-2007 to the 08 09 [;)]
my favorite thing about it.

To me it's a "spiritual sucessor" to a couple of Fords I've had in my past.[driving]
Eklipse113 05-17-2009, 04:11 PM When my dad said to look at the focus for a new car, i was pretty closed-minded because i thought the only option was to get the 05-07 style sedan.. don't care for that much. i thought the hatch was cool though. anyway when I came to the dealer, I found out the style had changed... and thought the sedans were still ugly, but I saw pictures of the SES coupe and pretty much turned a 180 on the looks.
