How can I open the front seat backrest from the back of the seat? I want to open it to insert a small pillow cushion like a lumbar support.
I know that on the bottom back of the backrest, there is a opening closed with a metal rail.

You would have to take off the outer fabric covering. take out the seat, and remove the outer covering and slip something in there and you will be fine. shouldn't be too hard, just may take a bit.

i know some gm models' seatbacks are removable and are held in by only clips. unfortunately i have never seen a ford with this type of seatback

You can add a lumbar support to the seat-back without actually removing anything, except for partially removing the cover itself.
Here's my thread on the process (http://www.focusfanatics.com/forum/showthread.php?t=171687). I used a 12x12x1" foam pad, left in it's plastic wrapper, and encased in nylon mesh. This mesh pillow was zip-tied to the inner wire frame-work to keep it from moving around. It's been in there and working excellent since I did it. It's a great mod to the OEM seat.

Thanks Bluefront. Your thread was very helpful. However I have a question : How can I take the cover off from the bottom? I have seat fabric not leather. On the bottom back of the seat where the front and back fabric join together, there is this metal rail. There must be a way to roll the fabric off.

I've never seen the cloth seats, but they're probably similar. the bottom sections of the cover are not metal...they're plastic "U" strips, permanently attached to the cover. They just hold together by the force of the interior foam. You start at one edge, compress the foam with your hands, and the "U" strips will peel apart. It sounds tough.....and you need strong hands, but they pull apart without any tools.
