I have an 02 sonic blue SVTF with stock 5 spoke rims. I decided to paint my rims gunmetal, and im having some paint mixed to do the brake calipers burnt orange. i noticed that my rotors are really rusted where the pads dont touch them. Would it be ok to sand them down to the shiny metal again, mask off the part the pads touch so nothing is sprayed on it, and clear coat the rotors?
i just dont want to do anything that is going to hinder the brakes from working correctly so i thought i would ask before proceeding with this little project.

i dont think its worth it. when the brakes heat up the clear coat isn't gonna help. you could take them off and clean them up, maybe even get them cut while your at it. my brembo solid disks are rusted around the edges, its annoying but i can live with it. as long as they work.

once you start driving the rust comes off. brake rotors will have a layer of rust on them after a day or so if you let the car sit.
do not paint the the operational part of the rotors. you can paint the edges, the part that the wheel bolts to, but the actual braking surface should not be touched. remember that brakes get HOT, so you will need to use some high temp paint.

If your car has been sitting for years, then the rust may have gone deeper, but if not, it will coe off right away. just take it for a quick drive and you will be fine.

yea, i dont plan on touching the braking surface. just bothers me that there is that little bit of rust above and below the braking surface. but i will just clean it up a little and leave that part alone. I am having high temp paint mixed for the calipers cuz i know regular paint will not hold up to the heat. Thanks for the advise guys!!
