I know this is a site for the ford focus but I figure i'd take a stab at it to see if i can get an answer. I've been a fan of the WRX for some time now and im able to call it even before its visable based on the low rumble of the exhaust alone.. But now im just curious what part or combination of parts give it that specific sound?

It's not so much a design of any particular exhaust, it's the fact it's a horizontally opposed engine, vs an inline in the Focus. Very different sounding engine, both intake and exhaust. Definitely a unique characteristic.

Ever nnotice the sound difference from an inline motorcycle to a twin, example RC51 vs ZX-9, V-twin vs inline 4. Same thing applies to the boxer engine's.

Also much of a vehicles exhaust sound has to do with the cylinder head design.

opposed cylinders, and likely the header

(apparently I've been told that by extending the tubes from cylinders 1 & 3 on our cars by about 2 feet would probably give off a similar sound [;)]) don't remember who said it though, lol.

why would you take out spark plugs....dont you need them all for the engine to run smooth?
